What I have learned with this degree and how I will integrate my previous learning with my new found knowledge? If I had read the definition for Interdisciplinary studies according to Wikipedia before I began the IDS program at Marian, I would have not had the same understanding as I do when I read it today. Wikipedia defines Interdisciplinary studies as an education about choice. Interdisciplinary combines interests that allow students to make discoveries and connections rarely possible in the narrower confines of a single-subject major. Interdisciplinary as the term is most often used in education when two or more disciplines bring together information. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/InterdisciplinaryIn an unpredictable and changing world, …show more content…
During this year I found Aesthetics, Values and Cultures to be one of the most interesting classes I have taken. It allowed me to explore a world unfamiliar to me. The studies of sculptures and paintings I found very broadening. During this class I wrote a paper on the painting, "The Last Supper". I was able to gain an understanding of what the painting meant and how it developed. I found it interesting how the true meaning of this painting is about how we perceive others and judge outward appearances. Suddenly the replica of this painting hanging in my grandmother's dining room all those years made more sense. 2006The 2006 classes, Foundations of Christian experience, World history, and Philosophy I was beginning to see what a Bachelors degree majoring in IDS entailed. An IDS Bachelors degree wasn't totally about my career, it was also preparing me for the future by providing me with a variety of examples of how to look beyond the obvious. I was beginning to understand how and why others thought and believed what they did. An example of a paper I wrote was in History class and the impact John Edwards had during "The Great Awakening." Today we still see the affects with at least five different Christianity beliefs and the first mass movement of American citizens. The first mass movement brought us all together into the melting pot that we currently have in the United States today. We all have different ethnicities,
The first articles, for example, have already opened my eyes to the movement of Christianity’s popularity. It fractured the cornerstone of my stereotypical idea of what a Christian looks like. A Christian may be anybody and, sadly, I was surprised by this. This led me to wonder how much any religion may differ among its followers when the ethnicity and regions are changed. I had not even cared to contemplate the ideas already presented in class but enjoyed the experience of knowledge being thrust upon me. As with biblical heritage, in which, I have used my knowledge of the bible long after the class finished, I am enthusiastic to the idea of learning something that could be applied to my everyday life. This class may differ, though, as the concepts learned may be applied to other religions, whereas, studying the bible was only good for
Hey Diana, I am writing this letter today with hopes to inform you about a religions course I am taking. I know you are a history guy so I thought it would be interesting to write about the religious history of America. The United States happens to be one of very few major nations in history to be founded and established on principles of separation of church and state. This book I am reading, “The Religious History of America”, by Edwin Gaustad and Leigh Schmidt, gives a great overview of the different strand of religious development in the United States. They are divided into four fundamental time periods: the Colonial times; the Revolutionary War to the Civil War; Post Civil War to
Students revisit how the world and our country have developed over time in regards to religious beliefs and traditions vs. scientific discoveries and achievements. They trace how individuals have come together or been torn apart by differences in customs, practices, and teachings. They study this at the personal, school, community, national, and international levels. They compare and contrast actions and reactions taken over time and draw conclusions about people from them.
I had surprisingly learned a few new things that I didn't learn in the previous school year while in summer school. Each subject had educated me in satisfying ways. The most interesting things I was taught, were facts on poetry, information about Frederick Douglass, and an American dream that has changed over time. These subjects stood out the most to me because I found them really enlightening. They gave me a glimpse of new literature, leadership, and troubling lifestyles.
Contextual thinking involves having an expansive outlook on a situation, relating back to personal experiences, religion, and or culture. In addition, being able to see more than just a small picture but involves the ability to analyze a small concept and develop variations of theories and reasoning reveals critical thinking skills. From past experiences and lessons, I approach interdisciplinary studies from an analytical standpoint. The use of interdisciplinary studies is significant in today’s society. Interdisciplinary studies involve creating your own pathway and constructing knowledge gained in one discipline to another. Being a critical thinking enables me to develop and synthesize ideas in-depth and from varied disciplines. My perspective on interdisciplinary studies is that it functions as an alternative way of acquiring knowledge. Often time’s society focuses on traditional practices of learning, however, who I am as a person allows me to approach interdisciplinary studies from a non-traditional standpoint. From a background nursing, I have acquired efficient knowledge in sciences that allows me to research reasoning and theories through the scientific method to inductive and deductive
A lot has happened over the this course learning everything from music in the 1960s to interrogation techniques of the current. The last ting we learned about our country is how Christians played a role in it. The history of we came to be in America, how we have an influence and the social enigmas with wanting it in politics. The main things we covered in the past eight weeks is how different events have effected or influenced the United States. We begin in the sixties and worked our way through the major events and crises of our country.
One thing that I accomplished this semester that I never recognized the value of, was
Not many problems are black and white as they are in engineering. The determination of right and wrong is relative. Something that seems beneficial from one side may not seem so on the other. In order to reconcile such differences that pop up in the work world and in everyday life, interdisciplinary study can be a solution.
Intro: Molly Worthen is an accomplished PhD graduate from Yale University, and novelist of “Apostles of Reason: The Crisis of Authority in American Evangelicalism” and “The Man on Whom Nothing Was Lost: The Grand Strategy of Charles Hill.” (Worthen). The one class that really opened up my eyes to see the world in a different point of view was Entrepreneurship and Creativity. I may have not gotten the best possible grade, but I will never forget the learning principles that inspired me to create and explore many different options. The course had a marketing pitch competition that has gotten me to think in an entrepreneurial mindset ever since. As my parking app pitch came close with the runners-up, I am still trying to improve and innovate from previous models.
I learned so much about myself and became more confident in who I am. I learned that I am not good at accounting or finance and that you will probably never see me walking down Wall Street. This semester I learned that I have a new passion for health and wellness. I love learning about nutrition and how to fuel your body properly. My business classes taught me how to get out of my comfort zone and be able to present in front of a large number of people. I learned so much about myself that I would not have learned if I did not come to a liberal arts
An interdisciplinary study is a degree plan that allows for students to incorporate different field of studies to construct an academic field they are interested in. Throughout these studies, students are to research in understanding the knowledge of complex problems within their field of studies. Many people outside of these studies conceive that interdisciplinary is not beneficial over a single discipline. In my beliefs, interdisciplinary studies can benefit in how different fields and different approaches can intervene together. When two different fields are combined they can enhance your knowledge by using your skills in; different field approaches, hiring, and give a broader understanding of the full learning concept between two field
On June 26th, I started my first online college class. I thought World History would be a great place to start and relatively easy course to pass. I had no idea how the class would make significant changes in my life. This class was far from a few easy credits I thought I would acquire in the short 8 weeks. The few weeks with Professor Jared Harrington increased my literacy towards topics I would have given up in the past. This class affected my world view, improved me as a student, a learner, enlightened my view on world religions, forced me to analyze information from readings, and helped me formulate my own thoughts. The amount of material covered in this course was immense and I now believe I have a better view of religion, its role in history, and where the world is heading due to all the historical events of the past.
The first, and most domestically prevalent, circumstance deals with Christianity and how it truly shapes the daily lives of its followers. Before college began, my family and I would attend church every Sunday at 9:30 am. This Sunday could be easily used for sleeping, watching football, working or traveling, but we saw it as the Lord’s day and attended mass. Christianity also shapes the behavior of its followers by integrating honorable priests, meaningful homilies and lessons from biblical scriptures and other ageless writings.
The course began by distinguishing Christianity from other major world religions both in similarities and differences. Major
