Internal Conflict Between Romeo And Juliet And Capulet's

Baz Luhrmann (1996) and Franco Zeffirelli (1968), both directors of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, both successful, both totally different interpretations of the play. Though the two appropriations are only 28 years apart, they both are two completely different views of the play. The two movies show different aspects of conflict from the Montague’s and Capulet’s. Romeo and Juliet displays both internal and external conflict during the play. Shakespeare’s play shows the theme of conflict because Romeo and Juliet is as much about conflict as it is about love. The theme of conflict shows that Romeo and Juliet’s love was doomed from the start. She talked about Romeo dreamily and giggled at the thought of him as if it wasn’t as big of a deal as it was. Her rationalisation of the two surnames had caused her much confusion and internal conflict, that she began to pace around her balcony. The camera had close up shots of Juliet as she spoke during her monologue, to show her sorrow of the situation and to make more of an effect to the viewer. During one of her famous lines, ‘What's Montague? It is nor hand, nor foot, nor arm, nor face, nor any other part belonging to a man’, the camera had panned slowly with her as she walked down a flight of stairs. The Montague’s wear more casual clothing where as the Capulet’s wear more formal, westernised clothing. This showed, the conflict between the two families, by the two wearing completely different attires during the movie, showing that the two refuse to be anything alike. With the props in the movie, they were more modernised. Guns and fast cars were used in the movie to show the fight between Mercutio and Tybalt. The scene was filled with close up shots off all characters involved in the scene. When showing all the characters, it was quickly panning between them all, to show their reactions. The music that was being played had caused suspense in the deaths of both Mercutio and Tybalt. The music was long and slow, which created tension within the scene. One of the major sound effects in the fatal fighting scene was the sound of the thunder, which indicated an upcoming storm metaphorically and literally.
