The journal chosen for this assignment, “ International Journal of Education and Bilingualism” discusses the aspect of how one feels while conversing in a different language. The aim of the journal article chosen, “ What has personality and emotional intelligence to do with ‘ feeling different’ while using a foreign language?” was to find a link, between the individual’s personality, emotional intelligence and feelings while talking in the foreign language. In order to test this, two sets of people were chosen who spoke Polish-English. The first set, were immigrants who had learnt the language after migrating and the second had been students who had been in the country for a considerable amount of time. The study focused primarily upon two …show more content…
The participants chosen for the study, however, comprised of 102 individuals with a larger majority of females as opposed to males. The age range had been set between the ranges of 17 to 58 years with varying degrees of educational achievements.
The results that were obtained indicated that extraversion (a first order trait) had played a key role in identifying when an individual felt different while they were speaking in another language. Where as, the other first order traits like language proficiency, age and gender were irrelevant. Furthermore, the results had also shown that emotional intelligence (a second order trait) played an essential role in allowing individuals to detect when they felt different. It was concluded that since individuals who were extraverted, generally tended to be more open to new experiences and were more sociable they therefore were able to identify the change in their behavior and personality more adequately than for example individuals who were more introverted. Similarly, individuals who had shown that they scored higher on the emotional intelligence test, represented a group of people who were able to see change in their personality since they were attuned with their emotions, such as sympathy, empathy, sociability, social awareness, etc. As a result, it was observed that to some capacity each order played a role in identifying how the individual felt, however, what was crucial about the study was to realize that while the traits
The age groups that were tested ranged from 17-35. To make a more accurate representation of the levels they could have broken down the age groups to a smaller range. If they had done that, the overall results then could have been separated by age as well as gender.
A bilingual teacher resume will help an individual to present information about self to a potential employer with the aim of receiving an interview call for a job. The resume must focus on the educational qualifications, knowledge of more than one language and work experience of the candidate. Additionally, one should also mention the personal details, skills and abilities, any achievements and career objectives in the resume without failure.
In the study, the between-groups design and the cross-sectional design were used for research. There were 243 participants between the ages of 18 and 39, and the majority were females and Caucasians. The average age was about 21 years old.
Within the study, the demographics of the participants were made available, including gender, age, race and ethnicity, marital status, and educational and employment status. Special consideration and statistical analysis was conducted for those in the High
In the world of second language acquisition there are many factors that influence the outcome of the learners experience, these can either be an aid or a hindrance to the process. The specific factors that will be addressed for the purposes of this paper are those relating to individual differences (ID). Individual difference as they relate to language learning can refer to various factors, but here the focus will be on those related to emotions and language aptitude. The autobiography “Me Talk Pretty One Day” by David Sedaris will be used to illustrate how these particular factors can influence a language learner.
When doing any research studies, there must be enough participants to make the sample representative of the target population and to also determine an anticipated effect size. However, 120 individuals (60 men and 60 women) are also being tested in order to maintain an equal gender balance in both groups for the study.
129 adults participated in this study. There were 64 young adults ages 18-24 and 65 older adults ages 61-89.
Sheltered instruction: An empowerment framework for English language learners by Helen Abadiano and Jesse Turner discuss the movement in the early 1900s to develop standards for bilingual education in response to “Goals 2000: Educate America Act” along with other legislation designed to promote higher expectations in academia for all students (Abadiano & Turner, 2003). Abadiano and Turner note that English as a Second Language (ESL) in not listed as one of the federal designated content areas included for standard development. Federal legislation went so far as to imply that English Language Arts would address the needs of ELL students, and
Suppose your child has been moved to China. Your child does not speak Chinese; is it the school system's responsibility to teach your child in English? Or should your child be expected to learn in the country's language and perhaps get extra help on the side? Why should a school district spend money on bilingual classes rather than on reducing class sizes?
It's scientifically comproved that kids whose parents expose them to speak two different languages during childhood, tend to show better response to brain activities diverging from monolingual kids. One article written by one of the most recognized colleges in the United states said that it happens due to the fact that kids' right brain side is more receptive to new information in a period that goes from the age of 6 months to 5 years. Kids that are stimulated to speak two different languages since a very early age have more precise mental skills due to the fact that their brains is constantly working to deal with all the information received all the time. One interesting fact about bilingual kids is called " code switch" which is a natural

According to Wolff and Kim (2012), extraversion was relevant to the expatriates’ networking capability in the social environment. The study found that extraverted individuals will perform well in the workplace because they get more chance to practice their arousal (Judge et al., 2002). However, introverted individuals who are considered less talkative, slow in revealing emotion or opinions and less action oriented will obtain a low score on extraversion (Migliore, 2011). Thus, the researcher has established the following hypothesis above.
Bilingual education was first initiated in 1968. It was a new means to educate the children who spoke a minority language. thirty-one years later the same problems exist for those children who speak a language other then English. The experiment of Bilingual education has been a failure and now it’s time to move on. The first English only initiatives were brought forth in 1981 by newly elected president Reagan. Since then the conflict over Bilingual education has drove on. Currently twenty-three states have “English Only” laws with 4 states having laws that are pending. The issue of bilingual education and the conflict that surrounds it is primarily focused between whites and Hispanics, although since the mid 70’s it’s also been involved
Language is one of the most beautiful techniques that humans have developed. Language allows us to communicate among each other; we can share and understand our and others’ feelings, opinions, and ideas. Because humans are imperfect, we have made language difficult because we have created multiple languages. With lots of language around the world, it is difficult to share, understand, and connect each other feelings, opinions, and ideas. Bilingual students can break this barrier with their culture and schools. Bilingualism breaks the language barrier and opens more opportunities, different views, and better relationship. The world needs to encourage students to learn more languages to give the students become open-minded for the better
The metaphor of an “American melting pot” depicts the concept of people from different backgrounds fusing into one society. Even today as new immigrants arrive in the U.S., our society absorbs them. As with any integration, unavoidable issues spring forth. Different people have different meanings for language, making it a controversial topic. The essays of Martín Espada, a former lawyer and current professor, and those of the author Richard Rodriguez are prime examples of the varied interpretations of language. Espada believes that language is a part of a person’s culture, while Rodriguez argues that a person must integrate his or herself into their country's society. I believe that language at its source should
