1. The definition of interpersonal communication I like most is that of Stewart, “The kind of communication when people talk and listen in ways that maximize the presence of the personal.” This definition fits with interpersonal communication because it implies the different approaches to communicating, and what distinguishes them (the level of the personal that is present). For example, there are three approaches: I-It, I-You, and I-Thou. These approaches are important because they are used to distinguish the difference between interpersonal communication and dyads. While interpersonal communication requires an understanding of the personal, dyads are simply basic communication between two people that does not merit any such understanding. …show more content…
For example, you may sometimes ask your significant other to get a few items from the grocery, and such an act would be considered a dyad because it is not at all personal information. However, if you also share deeply personal information with that person, such as your values, that relationship would still be an interpersonal one. On the other hand, if you never shared personal information with someone, say the teller at the bank, you could only have a dyadic relationship and not an interpersonal …show more content…
For, in such communication, we perceive people as an object through which we can accomplish some task, and nothing more. In regards to the check example, we treat the bank teller as an object through which a check can be deposited. There is no effort made to get to know any personal aspects of the teller, and instead, there is only the basic communication to clarify our desire of wanting a check deposited. As I stated earlier such communication is a dyad and not interpersonal communication because there is no effort to understand the personal information of the other. Therefore, in order to classify something as interpersonal communication, the other person should be treated as a person, and not simply an object through which a task can be
The term interpersonal communication often referred to as dyadic communication sounds a lot more complex than it really is. It is the communication between two people, or face-to-face interaction. There are many different characteristics that separate dyadic communication from other forms of communication, such as being more direct, personal, immediate, spontaneous, and informal. I chose to do an interpersonal communication analysis on the movie Dirty Dancing. In the movie there are two main characters that develop an interpersonal relationship, Frances “Baby” Houseman and Johnny Castle. In the beginning of the movie, Baby is the quiet naïve girl that is always over-looked in the crowd, she becomes infatuated with Johnny and his talent for dancing. Johnny holds the reputation of the “bad boy” and many have preconceived ideas about him before they take the opportunity to get to know him. Throughout the movie there are many different concepts of interpersonal communication displayed such as; rigid role relations, the journey towards intimacy, and self-disclosure.
What does Interpersonal communication mean? Well interpersonal communication is something that exists within one person. An example, of interpersonal communication would be like when someone having awareness of how they affect the world around them. Weather verbal or nonverbal communication is taking place in this movie. Also, there are many different ways to respond and receive to the messages that are being exchanged. A lot of the ways the messages were being received through the movie “Riding in Cars with Boys,” The movie is about how a high school girl named Beverly who got accidentally pregnant by a boy named Ray. However, the movie shows nonverbal communication and also the way we communicate has an affect on it.
To me interpersonal communication describes the exchange of verbal and nonverbal messages between two different people. Joseph DeVito states that “interpersonal communication is inevitable, irreversible, and unrepeatable” due to these things effective communication is a necessary skill for us to function in our day to day lives (p. 20). Therefore, I have created a theory for interpersonal communication that goes as follows; To experience effective communication you must understand: your culture, the other person’s culture, and how to listen effectively. By knowing these three things you can consistently avoid misunderstandings and promote understanding in your interpersonal and intercultural relationships.
Interpersonal communication is defined by Kory Floyd as, “communication that occurs between two people within the context of their relationship and that, as it evolves, helps them to negotiate and define their relationship” (22). Interpersonal communication has numerous concepts and all of them appear in pop culture. To show I thought about a movie I has seen lately. I remember watching The Guilt Trip, I went over to Youtube.com and found the trailer for the movie. The movie is about a man who is traveling cross country to sell a product he created and ends up taking his mother along. The trailer alone has three example of concepts in interpersonal communication. The examples are the Johari Window, stereotyping, and gender differences in expressing emotions.
Interpersonal communication is key to the life of a healthy relationship or marriage. Without communicating relationships and marriage will end failing. One of the biggest challenges with interpersonal communication lies in our ability to share our thoughts and concerns, conducted by feelings, desires, goals and needs, with another person
I. Interpersonal communication can be defined a number of ways, but it is usually described as communication between or among connected persons or those in a close relationship. I have really been able to examine my own interpersonal communication, between and among the people I am connected to or have close relationship with, over that
The idea that will be focused on throughout this paper is; what is Interpersonal communication? The idea seems quite simple from the outside in, but if you were to take a deeper look at the subject you might find it to be a rather complex. To start lets simplify things a little bit. We can begin by thinking about just how people that have become acquainted with one another, and communicate in a romantic relationship. This idea can be broken up into five stages, but we will be looking at only the first two. The first stage would be the Initiating Stage, “This stages is about catching another’s attention…” (Jeanne Flora, 2013, 111) This stage focuses on getting to know

Interpersonal communication is an exchange of information, feelings and meaning between two or more people, in this process ideas are formulated with an aim and message is then sent and received by the recipient who gives a feedback, it mainly occurs between small groups of individuals, typically in a face-to-face setting, where participants engage in a minimally restricted dialogue with each other (Minardi & Riley, 1997)
What does interpersonal communication mean and how do we use it in our daily life? Well the definition of interpersonal communication is the process by which people exchange information, feelings, and meaning through verbal and non-verbal messages. So what I get from that definition is that interpersonal communication is trading information, feeling, and meaning through talking and/or body language. It is a face to face type of communication. We use interpersonal communication in our daily lives. Often times we use it more than we think or even realize. There are many different ways we use interpersonal communication. For example, I sometimes work with Digpaddle sports at Quail Lake and we sell/rent kayaks, water carpets, and paddle boards,
Interpersonal communication is a very vital part of everybody’s life and success. This is because in our everyday lives, we communicate with people directly even if we do not want to. It was said by Confucius “Tell me and I’ll forget. Show me and I’ll remember. Involve me and I’ll understand.” This is very true because people tend to forget things that they are not interested in. So if your interpersonal communication is good, they will be more interested in the conversation and will recall that information more precisely. For this reason, interpersonal communication has been studied and perspectives or views have been made to distinguish
Interpersonal Communication is a crucial part of everyday life. People communicate in many different ways. It can be as simple as a nod to the barista at Starbucks or a "have a good day" at the drive-thru window while getting your breakfast sandwich. It can be as involved as participating in a job interview or a brainstorming session. Every word and every action, or inaction, means something. Even ignoring someone is communicating. By paying close attention to the details, an outcome can be changed. As we interact during our daily activities we convey our responsiveness, express like or dislike, and express equality.
Interpersonal communication is an exchange of information between two or more people. Successful interpersonal communication is when the message senders and the message receivers understand the message.
