The purpose of observational methods is to investigate the interaction between people with the surrounding built environment, thus when researching food marketing along Ecclesall Road, the aim of the observation was to see whether restaurants with different marketing techniques attracted contrasting demographic profiles. While observing the marketing techniques and customer base, photographs were taken that documented the feature of interest, including whether outside seating facilities were being used and how the menu was presented to potential customers.
This highlighted weaknesses associated with observation, firstly although the observation was performed after 17:00 on a weekday evening when people finish work and dine, most of the restaurants observed were very empty, with some appearing closed to the public. Consequently, the aim of the observation could not be achieved, as there were too few customers to make note of demographics. Thus photographs, an integral part of observation, could not illustrate how successful the marketing was being and whether it was increasing trade. The images could not capture movement or change, meaning as soon as one restaurant had been observed, customers could have entered but the researchers remained oblivious.
Another weakness of the method, as a result of cameras being used, was that the covert nature of the observation was breached. As a consequence of restaurant owners seeing people taking photographs of their property, they
The study begins by explaining how much the residents of Gourmand love good food. They love food so much that that over time, a commission of distinguished chefs had decided that not any one should be capable of opening up a restaurant. If a restaurant was to be open, a chef would have to have 21 years of training, attend a prestigious school, and obtain a license to become a chef. These guidelines would ensure that when a resident would go to a restaurant, the food would be good. The first-class quality of food consequently rose the prices of restaurant meals to become very expensive.
Although the cameras keep track of people for most of their lifetime outside their homes, the surveillance is necessary to regulate citizens and prevent them from doing criminal activity. Cameras control a large part of people’s lives, with purpose “to enforce good laws... to track the government’s political enemies, to gather ammunition for blackmail, and so on,” (Volokh 9). Cameras do not watch everyday activities to observe where one needs to go, but they are there to examine the cities for thieves and vandals. While these cameras appear in almost every part of the city, and people are unaware of what information of theirs is being taken away, the government or city does not scrutinize and judge people for everything they do. Unless a recent crime has occurred and the police requires its usage to track down the suspect, only then would a footage be released for the public regarding the criminal. Otherwise, other trivial and personal information about where one goes is not revealed. Whether the information is recorded or not, it does not affect the normal citizens who live in the area who have done nothing
