Implementation of the IOM Future of Nursing Report Grand Canyon University NRS-440 Trends October 8, 2015 Health Care Transition The United States Health care system is in the mist of converting to a preventative, health management focus system from a treatment focused system. There has been plenty of benefits and trials during the transformative period, like as with any other changes. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) requested that a report be done that would bring clarity to and direct the nursing profession on their parts and conversions that nursing is going to face. In this essay the IOM report that was completed by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) on the future of nursing will be explored. There will be discussion of …show more content…
Nursing workforce issues were the fourth component that was identified and addressed in the IOM report. The capability to design and assemble data will essentially provide a superior arrangement for an effective workforce. This can possible link regulations for nursing ratios, demand for nurses due to the approaching nursing shortage, better education for nurses, data collection of academic studies to support the appropriate decision making of policies and funding. This will all be done by leading nursing professionals which is important for all nurses. Stakeholders/Support Groups Many groups are involved with the improvements of health care for the public. Many related aspects of the general quality of research and of care provided to the patient population are shared by these groups. The IOM is an explicitly nonprofit organization that is associated with the National Academy of Sciences. They “give unbiased advice, accurate information to professionals and government officials to enhance the health of the general public” (Marrocco & Stabb, 2015). By the same token, the RWJF is also a charitable organization that was founded by the chairman of Johnson and Johnson Company. The soul focus of RWJF is on health related issues in the U.S. and “supports training, education, research, and projects related to U.S. health-care services” (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2015). The
Throughout the process of composing this report, the Committee of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Initiative on the Future of Nursing devised and enacted what is known as the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action. The engendering of the "Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health" was a major component of that initiative. The aforementioned organization was not only responsible for conducting the research that this report was based on, but actually provided four essential recommendations that it believed the data supported and that have a direct correlation to the data collection necessary for future workforce policy making and planning, as
The Institute of Medicine’s 2010 report on The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health acknowledges the changing healthcare sector in the US and describes future vision of healthcare and the role of nurses to fulfill that vision. The United States always strives to provide affordable and quality healthcare to the entire population of the country. In order to achieve this goal an overall restructuring of the healthcare system was necessitated. Nurses are considered to be the central part of the healthcare system to provide high quality and safe patient care. Nursing in the US is the single largest segment of the healthcare workforce with almost 3 million nurses working in different areas across the county. The changing
Over the last five years, the United States has implemented a new policy in which Americans will receive their health care benefits. This policy is known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act which was implemented in 2010 through United States federal statue and signed into law by President Barack Obama. The intentions of the reform is to insure that all Americans have affordable access to health care benefits without struggling to afford the cost associated. The reform is broken down into nine title sections that affect all aspects of health care and changes that will be associated. In this paper, I will be discussing each of the title sections and how the changes will affect the field of nursing.
The impact of iom report on nursing practice particularly on primary care and how you would change your practice to meet the iom report. Scope of practice barriers are particularly problematic for advance practice registered nurses (APRN’s) aprn’s and the expansion of healthcare organization that have increased the roles and responsibilities of nurses in patient care- such as veterans, health, administration/ remove scope of practice barriers, particularly for aprn’s. How I can change to meet the IOM reccomendations. I have taken the first step by enrolling in an ADN to BSN program. I recently got a certification in my specialty- maternal newborn nursing. With these skills, I will be able to not only advance my personal career, but also apply my knowledge to make the environment more efficient and beneficial for the patient. By incorporating research and evidence based practices in patient care, I will be able to assist the patient to the best of my abilities.
The (Institute of Medicine Report ,2010) pointed that there was need in the transformation of nursing
The impact of report on practice particularly in primary care is very huge. Over the past decades, we have realized, with every passing decade, nursing has become an increasingly integral part of the healthcare services, so that a future without large numbers of nurses is highly impossible to envision. We have also witnessed the drastic changes and advancement that have happened in the field of nursing over the past decades. Nurses have to change their current health care practice in order to meet the growth and also the goals of the IOM report.
I believe the issues that prompted a need for healthcare reform included an increase in chronic, life-long diseases, and rising costs of healthcare. The care that is delivered by registered nurses is taking on more leadership roles and advocacy of care functions. A 2010 IOM report indicates that nurses have an important contribution to make to "building a health care system that will meet the demand for safe, quality, patient-centered, accessible, and affordable care" (Wilson, Whitaker, & Whitford, 2012). With this being the focus of our health care system as nurses; we can lower the rates of hospital readmissions, as well as advocate for our patient’s chronic diseases which will hopefully provide adequate patient education limiting the severity
“According to the IOM report, the nursing profession is the largest segment of the nation’s healthcare workforce. Nursing represents the largest sector of the health professions, with more than 3 million registered nurses in the United States.”
Due to innovations in technological tools and information management systems while collaborating and coordinating care with other health professionals, nurses have been called upon by the IOM committee to acquire higher levels of education to help them meet the needs of the population. The educational systems to prepare nurses for the work force today, needs to be geared towards community settings like primary care, public health, and long-term care. Nursing curricula in schools, need to be reviewed, updated, and adaptive enough in science, technology, research, and rich fundamental concepts that will enhance decision making skills, involving dynamic clinical situations in all settings to meet the ever changing needs in health care according to the IOM committee.
In 2008, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) launched an initiative to assess and reform the nursing profession to address the complex unique nursing needs for the current world. The IOM report published in 2010 calls on nurses to take greater role in the healthcare system by taking leadership roles and obtaining high level education. The report envisions nurses to use their full potential and attain academic progression to redesign the healthcare profession in United States.
The National League of Nursing (NLN) (2012), along with its fellow organizations in the Tri-Council for Nursing, which include the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the American Nurses Association, the American Organization of Nurse Executives, strongly endorsed the Institute of Medicine’s The Future of Nursing and called for cooperation among stakeholders. Communications in the report revealed that nurses should practice in accordance to their education and training and calls for solutions that maximize the contributions of all nurses and abolish obstacles that prevent them from practicing to the full capacity of their education and training.

with recommendations for changes needed in nursing. This was a response for the need to assess
In 2010 the Institute of Medicine (IOM) generated a report making recommendations that outline progressive planning for the future of nursing. The Institute has responded to barriers and offers solutions to the rapidly changing healthcare model in light of the affordable care act (The future of nursing: Leading change, advancing health, 2011). This paper will consider the impact of the IOM on nursing education, nursing practice and the nurse’s role as a leader. It will examine, what I believe to be positive
Nursing practice is also one of the key messages addressed in the IOM report. The report suggests that “nurses should practice to full extent of their education and training”. Furthermore, “nurses should be full partners with physicians and other health professionals, in redesigning health care in the United States. This report has a great impact on nursing practice. The IOM report suggests that greater focus on managing the transition from nursing to practice. It recommends that regulatory reforms must be made to allow nurses to expand their scope of practice (IOM report, 2010).
