Is EDM actually intellectual?
Modern generations witnessed its rise from the beginning of the new century. Lives of teenagers (and older) worldwide have been influenced by it. It has become an unavoidable element for all the places in the world where joy, youth and life are celebrated. One should not be mislead by these statements, since EDM is simply more than that. It should be considered intellectual because of its variety, composition and complexity, and high knowledge of properties of sound and appropriate hardware/software it demands.
EDM (acronym, stands for electronic dance music) is a range of genres historically produced for nightclubs and parties. Origins of EDM may be traced all the way from the emergence of synthesizers and other more advanced technologies that replaced traditional instruments. It was approximatelly in late 1970s and early 1980s when synthpop, house and techno, the forerunners of our EDM, initially appeared. According to Sherburne, the “tipping point” to bring this music

Let us follow a part of the historical evolution of the modern music to explain this point. Blues evolved into jazz and R&B (rhythm and blues). Then they all merged with country music to produce rock and roll. Apart from that, jazz and R&B resulted in funk, and later in rap music. What makes EDM special is that it can draw inspiration from and adopt any of these (and all of their subgenres), but in the same time remains the ability to be recognized as unique. For instance, there is a trip hop, "a fusion of hip hop and electronica until neither genre is recognizable" (DJ Shadow. Slant Magazine) and there is also a trance, “a genre on its own, but also includes other styles of electronic music such as techno, pop and chill-out” (Fassbender). Dubstep, DnB, glitch, chillstep, hardcore, trap and many others; there is virtually no way to stop the evolution of
Centered on the amplified electric guitar, rock acquired this instrument from the electric blues just as they have derived other characteristics from many other genres. By sharing these attributes with other genres, where will the border be drawn between rock and another genre? In rock n roll music, an electric bass guitar is also commonly found in support of the electric guitar, the electric bass guitar was pioneered in jazz music during the same era as the electric guitar. By sharing so many consistencies with other genres, separating the definition of rock from other styles or sub genres can be difficult. After the uprising of rock, many other groups of music bloomed, from fusions of styles to new genres.
Electronic music is in most of the music that we hear today, and it’s good. We hear it in cafes, restaurants, clubs and even elevators. It’s all over us and it surrounds us even if we don’t realize it.
For as long as mankind has walked on this earth, music has been an important part of our culture and lifestyles. Each walk of life beats to a different drum. Different cultures use music for many aspects of their lives; for religious purposes, for celebrations, for comfort, for sorrow, for relaxation, for sports, for dances, for energy, for learning, for sleeping, and for sexual experiences. Everyone uses music for something. Music connects with people and reaches them in ways that words simply cannot. Music is a representation of what feelings sound like. It expresses emotion and brings that characteristic out from within us; it tells us a story. Every generation has its’ own sound and different music styles have emerged and become
What is music? Denotatively speaking, music is sounds combined in such a way to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion. Music to me is something that I rely on to get me through everything, it is the thing that has shaped me into the person I am today. But, if I asked you how many symphonies Beethoven had written, could you tell me? To be blunt, probably not. Not only is this a problem with people today, it is a recurring problem with our youth. In Daniel Felsenfeld’s essay “Rebel Music,” he explains the fault in our youth when it comes to being musically cultured. Throughout his essay he acknowledges how he was a stereotypical teenager who just listened to whatever was on KROQ. However, he also talks about how he changed and cultured himself, unlike all of his peers. In his essay, Felsenfeld proves his message that younger generations are musically uncultured through his use of allusions, connotative diction, and critical tone.
Today, sources of mainstream music such as radio, television and film soundtracks tend to reflect an increasingly superficial, formulaic and predictable mode of music production and distribution. The result is an increasingly homogenous mainstream market that tends to stifle creativity, experimentation and artistic vision in favor of proven commodity. This helps to account for the dominance of mechanized dance tracks aimed at younger listeners and the permeation of Middle of the Road (MOR) content aimed at Baby Boomer consumers. Especially in the face of a declining overall music buying market, the industry has become especially unwilling to take risks on artist's whose style is unfamiliar or
Rock and roll was born in the 1950's and has influenced our pop culture and music for the last six decades ever since its creation from blues, rhythm and blues, country, and gospel music. It has since then created a large variety of genres of rock such as folk rock, country rock, southern rock, corporate rock, art rock, heavy metal, glam rock and many more (Larson). Many of the genres created by Rock and Roll are still listened to this day and has also influenced other types of music and artists. The large amount of variety of music that is present today is due to the fragmentation of rock and roll and what the audience wanted to hear. This lead to the creation of a large variety of genres of rock to please every rock listener in the world.
This is because the Rock music of today is already behind the electronic styles as well as hip hop music. Rock has been losing popularity and although the electronic and rap music of today is pretty vain and meaningless it has taken over the mainstream media. One reason why Rock music might not be able to stand against the electronic and hip hop music of today is because the new generation has yet to put its own spin on Rock and Roll. In one hundred or maybe even two hundred years it will be very possible that Rock music will be very similar to Jazz and Classical music of
Eberstadt uses Ethos effectively to explain the relationship between the themes found in today’s music and why it is so popular with teenagers. Eberstadt states that, “The odd truth about contemporary teenage music-the
Disco is a genre of dance music that gained its popularity during the middle to late 1970s. It had its roots in clubs that catered to African American, gay, and other communities in New York City and Philadelphia during the early 1970s. Disco was used as a reaction by New York City's blacks as well

Music has played a vital role in human culture and evidence based on archaeological sites can date it back to prehistoric times. It can be traced through almost all civilizations in one form or another. As time has progressed so has the music and the influences it has on people. Music is an important part of popular culture throughout the world, but it is especially popular in the United States. The music industry here is, and has been, a multi-million dollar business that continues to play an important role in American popular culture. This is also a art form and business that is forever changing as the times and more importantly, technology changes. Technology has changed the way music is made as well as how it is produced,
The popular culture of music has changed dramatically over the course of sixty five years. Since this time, new genres of music have been introduced, existing genres have changed, and fixed stereotypes have been associated with certain genres of music. Music has become a major part of popular culture, and is portrayed almost everywhere in first world societies, including on television, radio, at shopping centers, sporting events and in every area of popular culture. Music has become a major part of popular culture, and continues to strive and develop into more and diverse areas of culture.
“While attendance at concerts and festivals for other music genres declined by 8.3% in the past three years, EDM has only prospered” (Lashbaugh, 2013).
There is an increasing mutual exchange as the synthetic and the human-made equally invades what we once thought of as natural. In electronic music, the human element that people input in their work is crucial to say the least. People provide the unpredictable pieces in their work to make it stand out from the rest. Most robotic or technologic generated music often is in the form of a pattern. Without human interface, electronic music, for the most part, is predictable. When electronic music is played without the human element, a sense of something that is missing usually occurs. Today, technological advances allow electronics to replace most of the human interactions. Now technology can mimic the sounds of non-electronic instruments. Instruments such as the flute, violin, and guitar are just some of these mimicked sounds that could be replaced. In this “genre” the human body is often held as a relatable tool. The audience notices the human element and realizes that they can create such works as well. Electronic music to some may feel that it is missing the human component in the normalized concept of seeing the artist. However, when developing the art itself, electronic music, whether it be in live performances, editing the material, or commercializing the music for use, the human element is still very prominent. The human component is implicated in music directly or indirectly.
