The style of the Internet definitely has an impact on how we read and think, but Carr did not mention another contributing factor. It also has to do with the vast amount of information available on the Internet overwhelming readers. People often do not know where to start when they look up a certain topic because there is so much information to sift through. If people do not find the information they are looking for after clicking through one or two links, they often get discouraged and do not bother to try and dig any deeper for the answer they are looking for. A person trying to do serious research could go through pages upon pages of information online and still only scratch the surface of their topic. It is very difficult for a person to create their own ideas and opinions and think critically when they spend an hour sifting through pages that all say the exact same thing. And while this problem can also be seen with books, it is a bit easier to sift through books to find information, you do not have to worry about whether or not the information in the book is valid unlike Internet sources. Some people do not agree with Carr’s view that the Internet is making people stupid, and instead believe that we have never been smarter.
