First area that related to consumer sciences is health and food intake. The most common consumers’ issue regarding health is medication and surgical errors. Medication error means any incorrect or wrongful of a medication gives to patient that leads to or has the potential to harm the patient. Surgical errors include wrong-site surgery, nerve damage, leaving equipment inside a patient and anesthesia errors. Second issue is physician and nurse shortage. A physician and nurse shortage is a situation in which there are not enough physicians and nurses to treat all patients in need of reasonable medical care.
Next issue is food labeling requirements where food packaging should be labeled like what have been prescribed under Food Act 1983 and Food Regulations 1985. Then it comes to food safety issues. There are foods in market that do not fit for human consumption or are hazardous to health. For examples, China tainted baby formula scandal. Last consumers’ issue with respect to health and food intake is short weight issue. Some manufacturers and suppliers supply foods of false weight or measure with the intention to deceive consumers and generate more profits.

In recent discussions of obesity, food, and health, a controversial issue has been whether what people consider being healthy or obese. People share their personal beliefs or experiences about being healthy and about what others need to do or eat to be healthy. On one hand, some people find ways to blame others about the unhealthy eating habits our society has, while other people think that we are responsible for our eating habits, and that we need to choose the healthiest way to eat.
I believe the two most important guidelines are chapter 6,Helping Americans Make Healthy Choices, and increasing our consumption of vegetables, fruits, and calcium, discussed in Chapter 4. If we continue to help Americans make healthy choices, and make those choices visible to communities, we might be able to get more people physical active and therefore have a healthier country. Increasing consumptions of vegetables, fruit, and calcium will reduce your risk of many chronic diseases, stroke, cancer, and diabetes. Calcium, fruits, and vegetables make your body stronger and maintain your body, without them your body becomes weak.
Food safety and assistance is a big problem in the United States. The government has many different programs to help the needy and keep the food regulated. The FDA and USDA have different programs and acts to help protect the people that buy the food products. There are tons of ways that food can be contaminated through the production process; for example, cross contamination. When dealing with food, Americans are forced to put their trust into the food industry. Although, there has been an increase of awareness, not enough, on how the industry grows food, processes, and what Americans consume. The United States is riddled with food industry immorality, obesity, and inadequate nutrition education. The government should have more control of the food industry, beyond the mandating of Nutrition Facts labels. In order to enhance the life quality of Americans, the government should partake in a more significant role with food industry regulation.

According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) more than one third (34.96%) of U.S adults are obese. This proves that people are not taking care of their bodies and being aware of the types of foods that go in their mouths. The issue is that many people are disagreeing with the government regulating what we eat, however if this law is not enforced people will be free to buy excessive amounts of unhealthy sugary foods, leading them to a chronic disease. Even though sugary drinks and foods can have a good taste and be satisfying to many, the government should regulate what we eat because there will be less people with chronic illness, it will be less money wasted on health care for obese people, and there will be less individuals consuming trans fats.
Today the food industry makes lucrative deals with television companies to promote their products through advertisements. Large food corporations make billions of dollars off the consumers by giving them what they want. However, many of the products they are selling us are consequential to our health, the environment, and the workers in the industry.
