Introduction
Italy is making headlines again, this time it’s a good story, Italians are staying healthier for longer. What is their secret? It can’t be their love for exercise, their soot covered streets, unsanitary public restrooms or their love for cigarettes. What is the Italian secret for out living the U.S and most European countries? As I finish up my studies in movement exercise science and public health, I wanted to observe the general health, nutrition and exercise habits of the Italian culture. Italians take time out of their day for meal time with the family. Because meals are prepared fresh and eaten slowly, friends and family members have time to talk and enjoy each other's company. It is proven that families who eat dinner together tend to feast on healthier foods than those who rarely or never eat meals as a family. Under our individualism vs. communitarianism category we asked questions on if a person relies on themselves or others and if they like to spend time alone or with others. In almost every case Italians answered communitarianism and Americans answered Individualism. We have come to the conclusion that Italians are group oriented. They choose to spend their time with others. They focus on creating positive relationships and feed off of eachother’s happiness. Being surrounded with positive family members, coworkers and bosses gives them a sense of security and self worth. This essay is going to describe how the society has an influence on food choice. Food is very important to the human body since it has the right nutrients for a balanced diet in order to enable good health and growth. However people depend on food, as people need food throughout, for the body to constantly work. However this essay is going to explore how food choice has influenced the internal and external factors that may actually have a little to do with the food itself, and in order to give a clear concept this essay will therefore explore the social factors of what one has to eat.
The Health System in Italy is under pressure because of two phenomena: increased demand for health care services due to population aging where Italy is the third oldest country in the world, and the growth of chronicity (E.g. in Lombardia area, 30% of chronic and fragile patients absorb 70% of Regional Healthcare System resources) [9]. These dynamics combined with the absence of economic growth are putting pressure on the National Health Service budget. Growing up in a small town has the advantage of being a close-knit community, unfortunately this also meant that exposure to foreign delicacies is not a common occurrence. As a child, I developed a strong dislike for any foods that I viewed as abnormal, and became quite a finicky eater. Thus, my familiarity with Italian food is somewhat limited to restaurant dishes, and recipes that friends exuberantly claim to be a crime if not made. While being a student in Victoria, I have had the opportunity to live in various different areas, some of which were next door to outdoor markets. The American diet is one big melting pot of foods from cultures all around the world. Foods from burgers and fries to spaghetti and meatballs, this diet has a vast amount of choices for meals. It is difficult to name a “national” dish. Furthermore, the Mediterranean diet is a similar concept. Including south European countries, the diet consists of many different cultures as well.
What can Americans do to make a sedentary lifestyle change? Despite Americans unhealthy habits and the obesity epidemic plaguing the Country, a change in sedentary lifestyle such as: Regular physical activities, and better eating in conjunction with a better diet are steps that can be taken immediately to remedy the situation and put Americans on the path of recovery.
This project tries to understand if people today are really health conscious, whether they realize the importance of health eating and exercising. Also the project focuses on which physical activities do people prefer the most, if people have knowledge of “a balanced diet regime”, and what is their daily routine of physical activity.
Millions of Americans wake up every morning and make a decision about what they will eat for breakfast to jump-start their day. Some may reach for a bowl of Cheerios or multigrain cereal, while others may opt for yogurt, toast, or a pastry. Some people choose to wash down their breakfast with pulp-free orange juice, while some may drink a protein drink or an invigorating coffee to get them going. For lunch, many people will consume sandwiches piled high with meats and cheeses or perhaps a cheap meal from the nearest fast food restaurant. When it comes to dinner, this meal may vary from family to family, but most dinners consist of a starch or two, a kind of meat, some variation of a vegetable on a good day, and a dessert to finish out the day.
In The Newsweek article, “The Deadly Noodle,” Michael Hastings, Stefan Thiel and Dana Thomas (2003) present two significant reasons that contribute to worsening people´s health condition. Hastings et al. (2003) illustrate that health condition is becoming weaker due to the consumption of bare calories in the food which is resulting in acquiring certain disease, such as obesity. On the other hand, the authors emphasize that decrease in health condition is also connected to the reduced times of physical exercises such as riding bikes, countryside workings, and salary-job arrangements.
Eating is essential part of our lives, and it is a necessity for human survival as it is for all other living species. While all living organisms need to eat to survive human race has more ways on how to satisfy their eating necessity. Two ways that humans can satisfy their hunger is by making a choice whether they prefer to eat out or stay at home and cook. Eating out has become popular trend in today’s society, especially among younger generations. With wide variety in delicious food offered, and chance to enjoy it with your loved ones, eating out has become primary choice for many busy adults. Eating at home gives us an opportunity to enjoy diverse food choices as well, and it can be also enjoyed with family and friends alike. Cooking is one of the oldest crafts that has been passed down from our older generations, and is still popular among many that enjoy preparing food at home. While eating out and eating at home are similar in variety of delicious foods offered, and chance to share it with our families and friends, nutritional health value choices are different for each of them. Eating out offers less control on nutritionally healthy food choices, and eating at home gives you more control on what kind of nutritional foods are we consuming.

Eating food is essential for all of us, it keep us alive and also gives us enjoyment at the same time. Food can be defined as any substance that can be metabolized by an animal to give energy and build tissue. (ilearn) In ancient time, when people feel hungry, they eat. However, as human history keep developing and evolving, we have a higher standard on choosing food that we like to eat nowadays. However, devouring fast food is one of the worst choices you can make. In order to maintain proper health and prevent numerous illnesses and diseases, consuming healthy homemade meals is definitely a more ideal choice. According to a recent study, “when people cook most of their meals at home, they consume fewer carbohydrates, less sugar and less fat than those who cook less or not at all – even if they are not trying to lose weight” (Wolfson). Because many people work full time and get home very late, people continue to eat it without being aware of how unhealthy it is for you and the health risks that it can eventually bring on. Based on the demand for quality food choices of today’s generation, it is important to compare and contrast the effects of preparing healthy, homemade meals versus relying on fast food restaurants for daily eats.
A close examination of the food diary allowed people to see that our family tended to have large meals to together only on Sundays and sporadic, smaller meals on other days. This was partially due to culture and the socialization of food. Keeping up with the fast pace lifestyle created a different schedule types for the family members, hence, different eating patterns. Many people of the North American society still try to enforce family time where they eat together. They cling to the ideal that families eating together fixes personal and societal ills (smoking, obesity, children's vulnerability to drugs, etc.) and that it is a way to kindle children's success in school (Ochs, Elinor, and Beck 2013:49). During the week, snack items and small meals made up my diet. This was quick and easy food preparation was one of the issues, apart from schedules, that stopped our family from eating together.
