Jacksonville is a city located in the “Sunshine State.” Situated in northeast part of Florida, Jacksonville has the largest land area of southern cities and is composed of a diverse population including African Americans, Hispanics, and Asians. This city is a melting pot of tourists and travelers who also visit nearby St. Augustine, the oldest city in Florida. The population, according to the United States Census as of July 1, 2016 is 880,619 (United States Census Bureau [USCB], 2016). The race and Hispanic origins are as follows: Caucasian 59.4%, African American 30.7%, American Indian and Alaska Native 0.4%, and Asian 4.3%. Duval County has the highest percentage of population of HIV mostly affected by risky sexual behavior (FDOH, n.d.). In this paper, I will discuss HIV tests and mortality rate among African American male less than 65 years of age in Duval County.
According to the Florida Department of Health, 41% consisted of Caucasian men, African American 77.2%, and Hispanic of 55.4%. These results were taken in 2013. From 2012 to 2014 African American men in Duval County of HIV deaths.

Men are normally the patriarch of the family and head of the household. Often times, they ignore signs and symptoms of being sick and instead will look for home remedies to avoid visiting the doctor. Men fear becoming diagnosed with a serious illness that will prevent them from providing from their family. Sadly bills and money supersede their health at times. If they are educated on HIV awareness, preventative measures, signs and symptoms, and treatment, it would reduce the spread of HIV. I would implement a teaching program that educates black men on the importance of early detection. The initial plan of action in decreasing the incidence of HIV is to perform a comprehensive risk assessment and risk factors for HIV.
