After three years of profound coaching success in North Queensland, Jason Demetriou returned home to take on the dual role as Illawarra Cutters head coach and St George Illawarra Dragons assistant coach. The door opened for Demetriou to return to his home district when Ian Millward relinquished his Cutters coaching duties after becoming the Director of Rugby League Pathways. Despite touching down in Sydney earlier in the week, Demetriou fully understands his responsibilities in terms of player transition that comes with the role. “My job is to make sure that they guys that come back from first grade are performing at a level that when the opportunity comes they’re ready to take it. “Obviously I had a lot of success last year at the Cowboys but I felt it was the right move for me and my family.” To ease into the Cutters role, he is shadowing Millward at training sessions before taking the reigns himself. The Cutters are coming off a disappointing 2015 season; therefore Demetriou wasted no time making himself known, and is keen to turn them into a premiership side. “I’m getting to see the types of things they’ve been doing before Christmas so I can get a better understanding. “He does the simple things right that you would want a lacrosse player to do. He can pass, he can catch, he can shoot and honestly there’s not many players that have all three qualities. He can play offense, he can play defense and I’m never scared to have him in any position,” said Escalante.
“That’s what I want to do,” she continued, “If I can help people work through their issues, that’s what would make me happy.”
