For my local current event news review, I read an article titled “Jerome Bus Driver Fired after Incident in Facebook Video”. I found this article on the KTVB website. It was written by author Dean Johnson and published at 10:13 PM on September 3rd, 2016. The article describes the reasoning for the recent firing of Mary Black, a Northside Bus Company bus driver in Jerome, Idaho. The issue that this article describes would be most closely related to the subject of culture. On Saturday, September 3rd, the Northside Bus Company in Jerome, ID confirmed to KTVB that bus driver, Mary Black, had been fired from their company. Black was fired after a video posted on Facebook displayed a confrontation between Black and a student on the bus. The student involved was eighth grader, Miguel Martinez. Black suspected Martinez of throwing a water bottle on the bus. As punishment, Black tried to take Martinez’ phone away, but, when unable to accomplish that, she decided to pour the water from the thrown water bottle onto Martinez. Black also demanded that Martinez only speak to her in English, not his native tongue of Spanish. Black can be heard on video saying, “I don’t understand Spanish. I’m not going to learn it. I live in America and it’s an English-speaking country. So if you want to …show more content…
Black’s racist comments caught on video seem to portray Idaho as a state that is not very accepting of cultural diversity. Considering the fact that many people already find Idaho to be lacking in diversity, this incident certainly does not help our reputation. From this event, those in Idaho and beyond should learn to be more accepting of people who speak different languages or practice different cultures than we are used to. Everyone deserves to be treated equally, and hopefully the outcome of this incident- Black being fired- can make more people realize
a. This particular industry has a constantly increasing cost. There will be an increase in the demand for input factors for one key reason. Every day, new companies will be introduced into this market of remodeling, economic profits being the encouraging factor. Because of this, there will be a bid up on input prices for the companies in the industry of remodeling. “When a market is characterized by a large number of small producers, the demand curve facing the manager of each individual firm is horizontal at the price determined by the
A lawsuit was filed on March 21, 2016 by Fresno Police Sergeant Cervantes who is suing Fresno Police Department and three other detectives. He states workplace harassment and discrimination due to his Hispanic ethnicity. Further details state, “Sgt. Paul Cervantes accuses Sgt. Tim Tietjen and Detectives Brad Alcorn and Cary Phelps of smearing his reputation with false accusations and spreading rumors that he’s a dirty cop. Tietjen, Alcorn and Phelps are white.”(Lopez, para.2) Such accusations can lead to further tensions, costly legal battles, and government investigations. Sergeant Cervantes seeks unspecified damages, attorney fees for discrimination, retaliation, defamation and malicious prosecution. He also states he has been subjected to such discrimination and harassment since January 2008 to the present. Furthermore, it is not the first time Fresno Police Department has been sued for similar incidences. There is an ongoing problem in the department that needs to be resolve.
I can’t let myself forget that being revealed as bilingual is a sure way to get fired” (12). Lorena is obviously frustrated and angry that her natural language is not allowed to be spoken, but she is unable to speak up for fear that she may lose her job, which means so much to her poor family. Lorena continues to explain how her race and the color of her skin affected her life when she says, “But I’m slightly darker brown than Marisela, so she would probably be the winner of any pageant judged by old Hollywood men, and I’ll never make it through a private school, unless I somehow manage to keep my cannery job long enough to save for tuition”
The case, Dunlap v. Tennessee Valley Authority, explores the issue of suspected racial discrimination associated with disparate treatment and disparate impact caused by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) against a qualified, experienced boilermaker and foreman that is African American. Questions for the court to evaluate regarding this case include: Is this a case of disparate treatment and/or impact and was the plaintiff, David Dunlap, subject to racial discrimination? Finally, did the TVA use personal hiring practices that allowed for racial bias in the interviewing process?
The movie “Crash”, by Director and Writer Paul Haggis, follows 8 ethnically diverse families/ individuals facing the struggle of modern day racism and stereotypes created and faced in modern Los Angeles, California. These individuals take the roles of individuals living their daily lives within Los Angeles, California while facing stereotypes. The cast portrays: 2 caucasian white male police officers, an African American director and his wife, a white district attorney and his wife, a Persian immigrant family, and a Hispanic father whose occupation is a locksmith. The scene chosen from this film involves the police officers (Officer Ryan and Officer Hanson) pulling over the African American Director (Cameron Thayer) and his wife (Christine Thayer) at a traffic stop. This scene establishes two different types of theoretic sociological concepts of Thomas Theorem and cognitive dissonance.
Not only so, when it became clear that this Hispanic employee knew how to do her job very well, the leaders spread the rumor that she was “arrogant.” You see, if you are a minority and know how to do your job, you are arrogant. It is nothing but a witch hunt: if you don’t drown, you’re a witch.
On March 29, 2017 in Concan, Texas, a Turtle Top shuttle bus filled with 14 occupants of First Baptist Church of New Braunfel was returning home from a church-related retreat. Jack Dillion Young, 20 years old, was traveling on the same road in a Dodge pickup truck. He was not wearing a seatbelt. Video footage was also taken of Young swerving on the road. Youngs truck heading north veered into the southbound lanes and crashed into the bus. 13 of the 14 occupants on the bus were killed. This story is only small things but the influence can be a big a problem. Therefore, my story reflected the social culture. Racial discrimination is deeply in people's mind that is significant
“A decade ago, Hempstead’s only full-time black police officer sued, alleging that Chief Smith had dismissed him on a trumped-up charge after he complained about his supervisor’s racial slurs. An African-American couple also sued, alleging that Chief Smith had turned them away when they reported that a white man had assaulted
The organization which I attended to analyze their organization, based on the three levels of culture discussed in class was Moe’s Southwest Grill. Over the past couple of years, my friends from Bloomington-Normal have raved about how good Moe’s food is. I thought that this class assignment would be a good opportunity to take up one of my friend’s offer to go to Moe’s. Doing so allowed me to get some great food and to further look into the company’s culture. From walking in, to getting food, and eventually leaving, it was evident what the employees at Moe’s believe in and the culture within the organization. Specifically relating to artifacts, espoused and enacted values, and basic assumptions, Moe’s organizational culture was extremely apparent.
One example is a testimony from a Mr. Alberto Lovato, a 29-year-old Latino man that who was pulled over for allegedly using a turning lane to pass other vehicles, even though police records show that the area the police officer stopped Mr. Lovato was more than 15 miles away from the site of the alleged violation. The police officer apparently drew his pistol, held it on Mr. Lovato, and ordered him to get out of the car and lie face down on the ground, where he was put in handcuffs and dragged toward the back of the police car. He was then held in custody based solely on his race, and questioned about gang activity, and drug and weapons trafficking. He spent several more hours in jail even after interrogation; reportedly stopped on the side of the road because of passing illegally.
These reforms will assist the local government in taking steps to create a dialogue that will ease racial tensions and help ensure Somalis and other refugees/immigrants are protected from hate crimes. It’s important to act proactively in dealing with the rise of hate crimes in Lewiston, because if there is no response to minor racial incidents, then much more serious acts of racial violence will follow (Rabrenovik 358). The employment of Civil Rights Officers will
The primary subject matter of this case concerns the issues faced in an U.S. company with a large percentage of immigrant Latino workers and the resulting interaction with their original Anglo workforce. There are numerous cultural misunderstandings in this case study between Anglo and Latino workforce. The Human Resource Department is unclear how to address the issues facing in the company.
As I entered the home to conduct my interview, I was immediately greeted by very soft spoken female. She’s a 42 yrs old African American female, who’s married with two children. She migrated from the south 30 years ago along with her mother and sister. She’s currently working for the Department of Education as a substitute teacher with aspiration of becoming a child psychologist. The subject was eager to be interviewed. She thought it would be great to sure her views and perspectives of her culture. Culture is defined by Webster’s Dictionary as , the total of the inherited ideas, beliefs, values, and knowledge, which constitute the shared bases of social action. To me culture is rich and fascinating filled with family, traditions, memories, and many dialects.
Culture is an observable, powerful force in any organization. “Made up of its members’ shared values, beliefs, symbols, and behaviors, culture guides individual decisions and actions at the unconscious level. As a result, it can have a potent effect on a company’s well-being and success” (One Page, n.d.).
