In The Old Man and the Sea, Fitzgerald uses Joe DiMaggio as a symbol, to help the reader understand one of the main themes of the story, which is that you can be successful no matter your condition. DiMaggio suffered from a very painful heel injury back then in one of the best moments of his career, almost forcing his retirement. Nevertheless, DiMaggio came up in the toughest moments regardless of the pain. Santiago also suffers from physical disabilities because of his late age, but even though the Old Man succeeds, what really matters is that he always kept faith in his abilities, despite his limitations. He sees DiMaggio as a role model, and he expresses that in the novella: ¨But I must have confidence and I must be worthy of the great
The Joe Chemo, 1996 illustration from Scott Plous and Ron Turner, spoofs the popular Joe Camel mascot of Camel cigarettes (see fig. 1). Instead of Camel cigarette’s healthy, strong Joe Camel; they have created a sickly, weak camel in a hospital bed, attached to an iv. Their camel is named Joe Chemo, to show the dangers of smoking. I think that this is a valid attempt to show the flip side of smoking, especially with the popularity of Joe Camel during that time. I think the creators are appealing to all audiences. The image doesn’t have text, it just shows a sick version of Joe Camel. The dangers of smoking were already known in 1996, so their illustration was an appropriate reminder.

Pete Maravich was one of the greatest basketball players of all time. His spectacular moves and awesome footwork helped him to get better everyday. His incredible passes and being able to control the court caused his teammates to like him even more. “His playground moves, circus shots, and hotdog passes were considered outrageous during his era” (NBA Encyclopedia Playoff Edition). His love for basketball was instilled by his father Peter “Press” Maravich.

As soon as Magic Johnson announced he had HIV, he immediately was a role model for others to get tested and have hope of living a long and fulfilling life. In 2011, Magic Johnson talked about living with AIDS/HIV for 20 years, and how this disease is not a death sentence. He encourages others to get educated and get tested. However, when Johnson first found out he had the AIDS/HIV virus, his concern was not how did he get the disease or what is going to happen or how will he afford the medical expenses, but rather, “How am I going to live a long time?” (Moughty).

You step into the street without really looking, and a bus zooms by, almost hitting you. What flashes through your mind? I would wonder if the bus was manufactured by the company I used to work for and would look to see what kind of shape it was in at that time.
Joe DiMaggio was one of the best baseball players of all time. He set many records, including the longest wining streak in Major League Baseball history, it lasted 56 games. He came to America as the son of poor Italian immigrants, but grew up to be an American Icon.
Major League Baseball has customarily shunned the idea of too much focus on individual player limelight. America’s pastime has prided itself on being the penultimate team sport.
My controversial topic is on Pete Rose and how he should be inducted into Baseball’s Hall of Fame. Pete Rose was a player that I looked up to when I was a young boy playing baseball. I was a big fan of his collecting all of his baseball cards from rookie year up to the present time. Now, most of the baseball critics and others do not want Pete Rose inducted. They claim that his illegal betting on baseball games should keep him out of the Hall of Fame.
Anthony Rizzo is another critical piece to the Chicago Cubs success in the 25 years of age he has become a critical leader for a roster that just keeps getting younger and younger. He is just entering the prime of his career and he is one of the best middle of the order hitters in the game right now. In 2015 he has put it all together with a .294 average with 16 home runs and 51 RBIs.

Who holds the record for longest hit streak in a game by 11 games?(The Streak) Joe DiMaggio, that's who. A most common stereotype depicted of disabled characters is that of a ‘super-man’ (Safran, 2000) or ‘supercrip’ (Harnett, 2000), where a disabled character overcomes massive odds to beat or succeed in defeating their disability to become ‘normal’. The character is often seen as a hero to have made such progress. Although Arnie does not reflect a hero status, his character is beating his disability by the very fact that he is still alive. In the opening scenes of the movie, Gilbert’s narration lets the audience know that “doctors said we’d be lucky if Arnie lived to be ten, well ten came and went” (Matalon, Ohlsson, Teper & Hallström, 1993), implying Arnie’s ‘triumph over tragedy’. He defies death that would be otherwise be brought about by his disability.
Growing up, people realize that around the time of reaching a mature state, education has affected their personal family life in one way or the other. With that being said, in his essay, “The Achievement of Desire”, Richard Rodriguez headed towards a path where he was unconsciously distancing himself from his family and becoming much more independent than he had expected. Rodriguez gives the reader a sentimental idea of the two contrary lives he had growing up, the life he had as a child, and the life he has as an educated man. He continued believing in his aspiration of how benefits of education can remarkably outweigh the past struggles of both his family and himself. Like Rodriguez, I also, in the past, found some form of solitude
