When you are thirteen, everything seems like it will be the same, especially if you are surrounded by people you love and trust. For John Bul Dau, life with his family in the dinka tribe was amazing. The elders were wise and taught everything they needed to know to become strong men and women. There was time to play and to work. Everything changed when the northern soldiers evaded their land and destroyed everything. John’s village was unprepared for the attack the northerners made. Some people escaped but the majority of the tribe died. As everyone was running away in fear, John lost his parents. So he and Abraham, an older member of his tribe, fled from soldies. Facing the threat of starvation, thirst, and murderous soldiers, he believed that the day that he was going to die was really close. He prayed that he would live longer to learn what happened to his family. As they walked Abraham told him stories. He taught him how to beware of watering holes because it attracted animals and people. He also taught him the best way to hide. This lesson came in handy when a group of soldiers near by found them near a riverbank. Abraham and John picked apai and submerged their bodies comfortably in the water. In the following weeks, they met other refugees. At this point it became clear that lots of people were fleeing the war by walking to Ethiopia. Many died from gunshots, thirst, and hunger. They met fifteen boys and two adults long the way and decided to walk together. By the end of October, the land was getting very dry. There was nothing to drink. Some of the boy wanted to die. Some tried to cry, but no tears came. They were so thirsty that they ate mud to force some moisture into their mouths, but it did not help much. They all drank urine to stay alive.
