The Legendary Augustus Waters
In 2012, the famous John Green amazed us with yet another iconic novel titled The Fault in Our Stars. The movie hit the theaters in mid 2014 and has been a hit ever since. Was the movie true to the book? They omitted a few scenes from the book, but still managed to create an amazing film that definitely did the book justice and maintained the basic storyline.
A novel is like an author’s canvas. They can paint whatever they desire much like an artist would paint a picture. The author uses different literary tools similar to an artist using different brushstrokes. These tools include writing devices such as plot, characterization, description, and dialogue. Similar to blending colors to create a different impact, an author may use multiple techniques to increase dimension in their book.
The thing Augustus wants most in life is to be remembered. This desire is first brought up when Patrick asks about Gus' fears, to which he responds, "I fear oblivion"(12). This desire is strengthened when Gus purposely loses a video game by killing his character to save children that were taken hostage. Though the game says the mission failed, Gus feels differently because he devoted Max’s life to a worthy cause. John Green included these moments because they increase depth in Augustus’ character. Green purposely didn't let him to

Augustus' strongest desire is to be remembered as something great, however the proof in the text reveals that he doesn't act upon this wish. This is contradictory because Gus is established as an extremely bold character. He asks Hazel to his house after meeting her that same day, and he says he no longer denies himself the “simpler pleasures of existence” (16), such as staring at beautiful people. He tells her he loves her while on a flight to Amsterdam, when just hours before he abandons Hazel because he was embarrassed of her oxygen
One common literary device used is repetition. An author will most likely use a word or phrase over and over again to emphasis their point. It is a usesful tool due to the fact it catches the reader's attention, and leads them to wonder as to why that particualr message is vital to the story. For example, in "A Sound of Thunder" the author states,"...and everything returning to the fresh death, the seed death, the green death"(Bradbury 500). He also says, "Stay on the path.Never step off"(Bradbury 502,503,504).Two great examples of repetition that leave the reader thinking,or be filled with suspense because it is clear that
All authors of the different forms of literature try to ensure they bring forth originality in their respectable works but also deliver a valuable message that all readers can relate to. These valuable messages occasionally relate to family, adversity, love, or struggle. Common themes are constantly found across the different forms of literature, how these themes are created, however, can range in diction, figurative language, and overall presentation. In poetry, the poet uses rhyme scheme, and figurative language to deliver the theme. In a novel, on the other hand, the author uses plot, characterization, and symbolism to create their theme.
He is showing a personal interest because it is a “disposition toward a specific topic or domain”(Schunk 285) he is the most comfortable with. In the scene where they go into the first room with candy, Augustus is one of the first to start eating and doesn’t care what it is. His self-worth very high, he is a very prideful kid who does not care about what others think of him. He shows a lot of personal interest when he starts drinking from the chocolate river and ignoring Wonka’s warning of falling in also showing high self-worth because he thinks he does not have to listen to what he has to
Who I researched for my project is John Green. What I learned about him was that he wrote the Fault in Our Stars based on a girl who died of cancer, so John Green wanted share to the people about her in his book Fault in Our Stars. So now for what I learned interesting about John Green is about what the Fault in Our Stars was based on.
Director Neil Burger could have done so much better, The movie was two hours and nineteen minutes! His representation of the character's love interest Tris and Four wasn’t great at all. It needed way more time spent on it. Why can’t all movies actually be like the book? It is so time consuming thinking of other random stuff to put in it.
In The Fault In Our Stars,by John Green,I can really relate to Augustus feeling that he has to leave a mark on the world.I have taught of what I want to do to be remembered as someone important in the world..But Why do we feel like we have to leave a mark on the world?.To the end of Augustus Water’s life, he becomes angry at himself for not leaving a mark on the world. He becomes angry because he wanted to be rembered as a hero or at least someone important is that not what we all want.Green uses “outlasting death” and “being another unremebered casualty in the ancient war and inglorious war against death” to describe how obsessed we are on being remembered or not dying at all.By comparing our lives to a war against death shows that we fight
In my opinion, The Fault in Our Stars was an amazing novel and I am glad to have read it. The story of Hazel Grace Lancaster’s cancer journey was realistic, extremely touching, and relatable for many reasons. I was easily able to connect to the novel because some events that occurred reminded me of my own personal experience. After finishing the book, I had more knowledge about how it feels to deal with cancer on a daily basis, and what those around the patient are going through.
Augustus continues on to state that if you are a noble person, you will die a noble death, and therefore gain a sense of immortality without having to be apart of the throne. He believes he posses the qualities of a noble person and knows that he will die a noble death and therefore choses to reject the throne. It is more important to Augustus to live the rest of his life in harmony and peace and the way he choses to have it, than to have the title of being a private, important
In your story The Fault in our Stars, there is a girl named Hazel Grace, who is diagnosed with stage 4 thyroid cancer. This reminded me of a hard time in my life, when I had a cancerous brain tumor. This was difficult for me because I now permanently have short term memory loss.
All writers have a distinctive literary style and use of descriptive language. This can allow them to manipulate their audiences and associate emotions to their characters. This can influence a reader to feel sympathy, hatred, or anything else the author desires, therefore creating a more vivid and enjoyable tale.
Augustus Waters, also struggling with cancer, helps Hazel open up and helps her have a positive outlook on life. They met at a support group to talk about their cancer problems and quickly fall in love. Before meeting Augustus, Hazel doesn’t have many people to talk to besides her parents because she isolates herself after she was diagnosed. Once she meets Augustus though, she is able to open up and experience what it feels like to love and to be loved. They go on multiple dates throughout the book which allow them to connect more and have a good time together. Later, Augustus finally professes his love for Hazel, which makes her really happy and helps her realize that ever since she isolated herself, she wasn't living the life she could have
Individuals with cancer need to be seen as “normal” humans and not just a victim of cancer. In “A Fault in Our Stars,” John Green utilizes the characters Augustus and Hazel’s to emphasize their quest for normalcy, through dating, becoming part of a social group, and the journey to meet their hero, in order to express the need to be seen as individuals not just cancer victims.
Hazel Grace Lancaster is a seventeen year old girl living with cancer. While she feels that depression is just a side effect of dying, her mother believes that it is a side effect of cancer and makes her go to a weekly support group. Each meeting seemed absolutely the same to her. Until one day where there was a boy staring at her as she entered the support group. His name is Augustus Waters, at the meeting to support his friend Isaac who would soon become blind because of the cancer residing in his eyes. Once the meeting had ended, the handsome Augustus approached Hazel, they introduce themselves and soon she is invited over to his house to watch a movie. Although, he pulls out a cigarette and Hazel freaks out to
In the history of written literature, it is difficult not to notice the authors who expand their reader's style and manner of reading. Some write in an unusual syntax which forces the reader to utilize new methods of looking at a language; others employ lengthy allusions which oblige the reader to study the same works the author drew from in order to more fully comprehend the text. Some authors use ingenious and complicated plots which warrant several readings to be understood. But few authors have used all these and still more devices to demand more of the reader. James Joyce, writer of Ulysses and Finnegans Wake, uses extraordinarily inventive and
