The Legendary Augustus Waters

In 2012, the famous John Green amazed us with yet another iconic novel titled The Fault in Our Stars. The movie hit the theaters in mid 2014 and has been a hit ever since. Was the movie true to the book? They omitted a few scenes from the book, but still managed to create an amazing film that definitely did the book justice and maintained the basic storyline.

A novel is like an author’s canvas. They can paint whatever they desire much like an artist would paint a picture. The author uses different literary tools similar to an artist using different brushstrokes. These tools include writing devices such as plot, characterization, description, and dialogue. Similar to blending colors to create a different impact, an author may use multiple techniques to increase dimension in their book.

The thing Augustus wants most in life is to be remembered. This desire is first brought up when Patrick asks about Gus' fears, to which he responds, "I fear oblivion"(12). This desire is strengthened when Gus purposely loses a video game by killing his character to save children that were taken hostage. Though the game says the mission failed, Gus feels differently because he devoted Max’s life to a worthy cause. John Green included these moments because they increase depth in Augustus’ character. Augustus' strongest desire is to be remembered as something great, however the proof in the text reveals that he doesn't act upon this wish. This is contradictory because Gus is established as an extremely bold character. He asks Hazel to his house after meeting her that same day, and he says he no longer denies himself the “simpler pleasures of existence” (16), such as staring at beautiful people. He tells her he loves her while on a flight to Amsterdam, when just hours before he abandons Hazel because he was embarrassed of her oxygen
