Many surgeries take place every day that have the intended purpose of improving one’s physical health. There are many types of different surgeries and a common type of surgery that is heard many times is joint replacement. It could be your family member, neighbor or friend that recently just had replacement surgery. A lot of times, there are many underlying causes to why a patient needs to have joint replacement surgery. One underlying factor that is commonly seen in joint replacement surgeries is osteoarthritis. From (PATHO book) osteoarthritis is “characterized by local areas of loss and damage of articular cartilage, inflammation, new joint bone formation of joint margins (osteophytosis), subchondral bone changes, variable degrees of mild …show more content…
Fransen had reported statistically significant evidence that showed the benefit of exercise on pain, physical function and quality of life immediately following post-treatment. Results for 2-6 months after treatment were also reported and showed statistically significant evidence. Different exercise methods were tested to see if report of pain and physical function would vary, depending on what exercise was used. The results showed that there was no statistical difference between different exercises. (Fransen, 2015) In the Ferreira review, three studies met the requirements and were reviewed for further results. Each study reviewed had different exercise methods therefore, produced different results but the results still remained consistent. There were no significant differences found between the strengthening groups and control groups. However, improvement of pain and physical function was statistically significant and recorded improvement in pain and physical function of the knee but knee adduction movement assessed in this study showed no statistical improvement. …show more content…
Exercise has been mentioned a lot throughout this paper will be a heavy portion of the nursing implications as well. Many different exercises can be practiced to improve pain, physical function and quality of life. From the Fransen review a nursing implication is providing encouragement to plan an exercise plan that caters to patient’s interests and availability. A nursing implication taken from the Ferreira review is encouraging to use resources such as physical therapy and personal trainers. For patients, it is important that they utilize resources that are available to them and some need just a little push to start using the resources. Combining knowledge from both reviews, another implication would be to encourage strength training or cardio and emphasizing on the benefits exercise will have holistically rather than just on improvement of pain but how it will further improve quality of life for the
Total joint replacements are very common in the United States, and are becoming even more common with increasing obesity rates and an increase in life expectancy. Long-lasting and high-performance implants are needed for the younger, active population that receives them. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality states more than 285,000 total hip arthroplasties (THA) and 600,000 total knee arthroplasties (TKA) are performed in the United States alone each year (2). Longevity of these joint replacements is dependent on several factors: the durability of the fixation of the implant surface to the bone, the bearing surface’s wear rate, and the accuracy of the surgeon in implantation of the total joint (2). Of these total joint replacements, periprosthetic osteolysis and aseptic loosening occurs in about twenty percent of cases, and aseptic loosening is responsible for about seventy-five percent of total joint replacement failures (2). This is
A total hip replacement is when the ball of the hip joint (which is also known as the femoral head) and the socket ( also known as the acetabulum) are removed and replaced with prosthetic part. Most people who have this procedure suffer from either sever hip fracture, they were born with a hip condition, or they suffer from an acute chronic arthritis(Stuart Fischer md,2010). The most common reason for a total hip replacement is a form of arthritis(osteoarthritis). Patient have this surgery to relive chronic pain they are suffering from. Someone who is suffering from a damage or a disease joint will be in constant pain(Stuart Fischer md, 2010).
There are several factors that go into considering if you may be a good candidate for a Total Knee Replacement. One of the most common causes could be due to all forms of arthritis; such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and even post-traumatic arthritis. Osteoarthritis is the most common reason for needing a Total Knee Replacement. Arthritis can severely damage an individual’s knee, causing massive pain. However, the first approach is trying the nonsurgical treatments first. Medications and even using walking supports are usually the first approach before considering surgery. When these methods fail to work the very next step is for surgery.
If your knee is severely damaged by arthritis or injury, it may be hard for you to perform simple activities, such as walking or climbing stairs. You may even begin to feel pain while you are sitting or lying down.
If you will become one of the millions to undergo a knee joint replacement Frisco TX, understanding the proper steps to take during recovery is imperative for your surgery’s success. Fortunately, 9 out of 10 patients who undergo this procedure see immediate improvement in their mobility and a large decrease in their pain. Without proper recovery, your knee replacement may not be as successful, so use these tips after a knee replacement to ensure an effective surgery.
Nowadays total hip replacement surgery is a common procedure with statistics continuing to show a raised numbers of operations taking place and, steadily increasing. From 2010-2011 in England and Wales, over 77,800 total hip replacements and more than 9,000 hip revisions were carried out (National Joint Registry 2011, p35). Also the routine elective surgery period between admission and discharge has been reduced in recent years. In England during 2009/2010 the length of stay was recorded as 5 days for total hip replacement (Health Service Journal 2011)
Hip replacement is a surgical procedure in which the hip joint is replaced by a prosthetic implant. Hip replacement surgery can be performed as a total replacement (or) a hemi (half) replacement. In a total hip replacement the damaged bone and cartilage is removed and replaced with prosthetic components. The damaged femoral head is removed and replaced with a metal stem that is placed into the hollow center of the femur .A hemiarthroplasty involves half of the hip ,which replaces only the ball portion of hip joint, not the socket portion. In total hip replacement, the socket is also replaced.
The most common indication for total knee replacement is osteoarthritis, or degenerative joint disease. The end stage of osteoarthritis is wearing out of cartilage (smooth, gliding bone ends) resulting in bone-to-bone contact in diseased joints. It is progressive and becomes increasingly painful as the cartilage erodes. Younger people who get knee replacements have damaged their joints by trauma (accidents that destroy joint surfaces), infection, cancer or tumor, and inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.
At the completion of the study, de Roos et al. reported that of the nine participants that completed the treatment, four participants reported a decrease in pain intensity, four participants reported being pain free, and one participant reported no improvement in pain, with an overall significant decrease in mean pain scores compared to before the treatment (P=0.00) (de Roos et al., 2010, p. 68). A long term follow up was completed at an average of 2.8 years since treatment completion in which six of the nine participants reported a further reduction in pain and were pain free, two participants’ pain level was the same since completion of the treatment, one participant had an
The value of total joint arthroplasty is well established. Doctors, nurses, and patients know that the procedures are common and effective, and that successful surgeries have great benefits. Successful operations are known to relieve pain and to improve the quality of life for patients and families. Should one of the surgeries result in infection, however, the consequences can be harsh, including serious illness, additional surgeries, or even deadly complications.
DOI: 10/01/2012. This is a case of 63-year-old male welder who sustained bilateral hand injuries due to repetitive motion injury from grinding. The patient is subsequently diagnosed with primary osteoarthritis, left hand. As per office notes dated 6/27/16, the patient is 87 days status post left thumb carpometacarpal joint arthroplasty. The patient complains of pain over the metacarpophalangeal joint and occasionally over the interphalangeal joint. The patient still has 3 sessions to complete. Objective findings revealed that the left anterior forearm, dorsal radial wrist, dorsal hand, the scars are healing nicely with no evidence of hypertrophic scarring or pigmentation changes. There is tenderness to palpation over the carpal metacarpal joint
The most common complication is blood clots after the knee replacement surgery and can form in the first four weeks. Infection is the most serious complication since it can be a deep infection and requires removal of the knee replacement to fight the infection. The most important long-term complication is loosening and wear. This complication is due to the plastic plate wearing away and the knee becomes loose causing the patient pain and discomfort. New technologies and methods have been developed to reduce loosening and wear of the knee.
1698). In the article, “Effectiveness of Exercise Therapy in Treatment of Patients with Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis”, researchers looked at the available data to see if therapeutic exercise is an effective intervention for decreasing pain caused by patellofemoral dysfunction. Researchers combined data from 15 different studies, with a total of 748 participants, in an effort to summarize the data and develop a strong conclusion regarding the effectiveness of exercise in pain reduction. According to this meta-analysis, or systematic combining of data, the authors determined that significant reductions in pain levels were noted in PFPS patients who performed therapeutic exercises. The authors concluded, “based on the results of the present study, exercise therapy appears to be an important strategy to achieve pain and patient reported measures of activity limitations and participation restriction relief in patients with PFPS” (6,
Total hip replacement or THR is a clinically effective procedure for the treatment of pain and disability that arises due to the final stage arthritis of the hip. THR is prescribed for the patients who do not respond to the options that are non surgical, self management, education of the patient, physical therapy, acupuncture, and exercise. ( Pivec. et.al,2012). Numerous procedures , a range of implant designs are available and it is the surgeon who has to decide upon as to which type of fixation technique should be used and which bearing couple should be chosen, component fixation method. Both cementless and cemented fixation are used currently for THR surgery. The implants of total hip replacement consists of acetabular component,
Nursing is the holistic helping of persons with their self-care activities in relation to their health. I agree Vargina Henderson in her definition of nursing and nurses role, According to Henderson, 1966 “Nursing is primarily assisting the individual in the performance of those activities contributing to health and its recovery, or to a peaceful death”. Varginia Handerson, 1964 stated that “the nurse must get inside the skin of each her patient in order to know what he needs”. from this statement I conclude that nurses play an important role in promoting patient quality of care. Nurses play an important role to promote pain management practices for patients, a critical component of the nurse’s role in pain management is pain assessment, medications administration, organizing and delivering patient care activities, advocating for patient rights, educating patients and contact with physicians regarding changes in patient conditions; these nursing functions are critical in the management of pain. So, we can’t imagine nursing discipline without nursing
