Junk food is not served as frequently and you may feel disappointed about this. I think the ban is a good thing since statistics show by the middle of the century, 2050, two-thirds of children will be overweight or obese if nothing is done. I wouldn’t like to be one of the people in those two-thirds and neither would you. Since action is being taken now by the ban and now we have a second chance to change for the better. Children who eat this are sometimes socially isolated because peers find their behaviour unsettling.” Furthermore these food colours or more commonly known as additives found in junk food can lead to hyperactivity. Two groups children found it hard to sit still and concentrate and had problems with reading when given additives during controlled trials. The organization of Debatewise stated that controlling the foods that students consume is important in combating obesity, as the dieting habits that most people form originate from when they were young. This is why it’s so crucial for schools to introduce healthier options in schools. If these unhealthy habits are developed, the students are “at higher risk for having other chronic health conditions and diseases that impact physical health..”, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These conditions can affect them emotionally and physically, including depression and obesity, which are important health issues both linked with the consumption of junk foods. The selling of junk food in schools is not a small problem either, as it concludes from a study by the Institute of Medicine in 2003 that elementary schools earn approximately $442 million annually from junk food sales. The importance of changing the school lunch programs to implement healthier options is high when there is so much money being spent by the students. Although obesity is a real problem due to the selling of junk food, it can lead to other problems that leading a healthier way of living could fix. For instance, the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension states junk foods, due to processing that removes vitamins, minerals, and fiber from the product, are empty calories that are ultimately worthless to the body. This alone contributes to unneeded weight gain and provides no additional sustenances that help the body grow. The Harvard Health Publications describes this to be a serious problem, and acknowledge not only this to be a complication, but mentions the unnecessarily high amounts of sodium levels in the foods, stating that “...the average
520). Children who are genetically predisposed to developing ADHD are much more likely to suffer from its effects starting at a young age. Researchers have known this for many years, but are still been searching for other contributing factors that they could use to hinder, or even stop, ADHD from affecting a child so drastically. A very hot topic in the field is nutrition, however controversial it may be, and what effects things like junk food, food colorings, artificial flavorings, and generalized food additives have on a young child’s developing brain. Many studies have been conducted that show nutrition’s effect on ADHD symptoms and even link potential causation in children, although for some reason it still remains very controversial. Many large, profitable companies would suffer greatly if it became widely known and accepted that their products were directly causing significant alterations in brain structure and function in young children. It is far too early to reach that drastic of a conclusion quite yet, but there are some strikingly strong correlations and relationships between nutrition in young children, and both the development and significance of symptoms exhibited in young children (Schnoll, Burshteyn, & Cea-Aravena, 2003, p. 65). It is for this reason that the overall poor nutritional structure and patterns of individuals, along with the content of
Today one in five school-aged children (ages 6-19) have obesity and people debate over how to decrease this number and prevent it from being more of an issue in the future. School lunches are often brought up in this discussion, some say that by getting rid of all junk food in schools would help decrease the number of obese students and prevent them in future by providing only healthy food options. On the other hand, they say that it's not that simple, the problems are at home and that getting rid of these items could decrease revenues for school activities from those products. The idea that dyes in food causes ADHD was first noted in "Why Your Child is Hyperactive," a book written by Dr. Benjamin Feingold in 1975. The eating style described in the book became known as the Feingold Diet. He found if you eliminated artificial food dyes and additives in American diets, cases of hyperactivity in children, which later became defined as ADHD, would decline. (Maragos, 2014) Dr. Michael Greger conducted a test to see if the intake of artificial food color and additives affected childhood behavior. The test showed that artificial colors increased inattentiveness, impulsivity, and hyperactivity among young children. (Greger,2014) Because of tests like this, several countries, including Britain mandated that food manufacturers remove most of the artificial food colors from products. In fact, the whole European Union said that if manufacturers want to keep using the dyes, then they have to put a warning label on the foods stating that this food product may have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children. (Food Coloring BAN in the UK but Usage Continues for USA, 2014) Many food companies have taken artificial food dyes out of their products being sent over to Europe, but continue to use them in the same products here in the United
