Freedom is everything to people, and animals alike. But animals in captivity are stripped from this. In SeaWorld and circuses, the animals are living their lives entertaining people and living their lives in cages or small enclosed pens. By keeping animals to remain in captivity people are taking away their freedom, forcing them to be used for entertainment, and not providing animals with the proper care. In captivity, animals’ freedom is being taken away. In SeaWorld, animals are stripped from their freedom. For example, in the article “The big question: Should We Be Keeping Animals Such as Killer Whales in Captivity?” by Michael McCarthy states that professionals are saying that wild animals, such as bears, tigers, orcas etc., should not …show more content…
For instance, in the book “Animal Rights” by Christie Ritter, she states that the confined spaces the animals in SeaWorld are kept in doesn’t give them the proper exercise or the proper amount of space to swim freely, “... animal rights advocates hope to see an end to the captivity of wild animals. They argue that zoos, marine parks, and aquariums are an outdated idea that subjects individual animals to a lifetime of miserable confinement” (Ritter 83). Unfortunately, it’s not that simple to just release the animals back into the wild, there are many complications and it won’t end well for the animals. Additionally, in the article “The big question: Should We Be Keeping Animals Such as Killer Whales in Captivity?” by Michael McCarthy, it states …show more content…
Animals have a purpose in life and it’s not to entertain humans, they were put in the wild to survive. For instance, in the book “Animal Rights” by Christie Ritter, states that large animals who are forced to do tricks in front of people can injure themselves or anything around them, “Animal activists say that animals such as elephants, tigers, orcas, and bears should be made to perform stunts for human amusement” (Ritter 85). Unfortunately, in some places there isn’t as much animal activists and there are still shows continuing. Similarly, in the article “Why the Public Applauds the Dwindling Attraction of Animal Acts.” by Caitlin Gibson, she states that California’s SeaWorld is being strongly affected than in other places, “Despite plans to abandon the theatrical shows, the orcas are still there, held in captive tanks, Wise said. The shows will continue at SeaWorld’s other parks where the impact of public criticism hasn’t been quite as acute as in California” (Gibson 2). Despite all the criticism, there are people, especially children, who are inspired and educated by it all. For example, in the article “The big question: Should We Be Keeping Animals Such as Killer Whales in Captivity?” by Michael McCarthy states a counter argument about children who want to become a marine biologist or something similar because of aquariums,
The goal of every zoo, aquarium, reserve, and marine park is to bring awareness of the need that the wildlife is in need of saving. Most extinctions are caused by humans. With our ever-growing need to explore the planet, we have taken control of numerous species’ habitats and thus they die off due to the fact that they have nowhere to go and are unable to adapt to new environments. Wars we have waged have also destroyed habitats, not to mention the hunting and poaching that occurs for furs, tusks, and other animal parts that can potentially be bought for a lot of money. Humans have been killing off animals since the day we were put here on Earth. At every zoo or animal park, you will hear the staff talking about conservation of wildlife numerous times because that is their overall message they are trying to reach people. They are trying to educate everyone so they can save these animals. For example, at SeaWorld, before watching the whale show, they give a presentation about how whales need to be preserved, saying that we should save the oceans so that the orca species can live on for many years to come. But what do whales jumping out of a pool have to do with saving the oceans?
Zoos, SeaWorld, and circuses are places for families to enjoy entertainment. However, most people do not realize how the animals in each of these establishments are handled. Yes, they all bring in revenue and present the tricks these animals can do, yet these places preform detrimental acts to the animals. For example, the killer whales at SeaWorld are sometimes starved if they do not perform the way the trainer wants them to. In comparison, circuses torture lions and tigers until they are submissive to how the show-people want them to act. Zoos do not necessarily torture their animals, but it is proven the animals live much shorter lives in captivity. “Lives of animals in the wild versus captivity are literally worlds apart, and even the best captive facilities can’t recreate the conditions of the wild — not exactly. Most don’t even try, leaving animals in tiny enclosures with no socialization, enrichment or joy. Captivity is unnatural and unhealthy” (Sentenac). People are starting to recognize the danger of continuing these practices, but there’s a long way to go.Furthermore, animals in all of these places have suffered many traumatizing and even deadly events. There was a recent report that two circus lions, whom had severe head injuries, were killed by poachers who snuck into the sanctuary. “Last year poachers bypassed an advanced security system at a lodge near the town of Tzaneen in the Limpopo province, killing two lions by feeding them poisoned meat” (Graham).
However, this still does not give SeaWorld the right to keep these animals caged for the rest of their lives, even if SeaWorld claims are somewhat
Imagine a place where you can see your favorite sea animals. Whales, dolphins, sharks, even penguins. Doesn’t that sound like somewhere you would enjoy going? SeaWorld is what comes to most people’s minds when they think of this, but is SeaWorld really that wonderful? Is SeaWorld truly what it’s hyped up to be? SeaWorld claims to be a sanctuary for animals where they keep animals like killer whales safe from the dangers of the world. Well, SeaWorld should really get a dictionary because a “sanctuary” is truly not what they give these animals. Orcas are the main attraction of SeaWorld but they are also one of the animals that suffer the most. Orcas in SeaWorld lifelessly float in their pool with little to no shade from the sun. In the wild,
Living in a world behind bars, having no sense of freedom, no thought of living in an environment where the boundaries are set by mountains, rivers, deserts and oceans. This is the life of an animal living in captivity. What gives us the right to take animals from their natural habitats and put them in an environment or home that doesn't even compare to what their home is. They don’t take us from our home and lock us up in cages in the jungle, so why should we do it to them. Imagine the problems that could come from taking these animals away from their natural habitat. Always having the thought in their head that they are never going back home. This would drive me insane and it probably drives them insane, too. Therefore, Animals should be set free in their natural habitats, because keeping them in zoos is causing their health to go decline.
“Can you imagine being in a small concrete enclosure for your life when you’re used to swimming 100 miles a day?” This is how captive dolphins live everyday, their natural habitat is swimming miles and miles in the ocean. When they get captured their lives change for the worse. In the past decade Seaworld and captive animals has been a controversial subject. Many people believe the keeping orca whales captive is damaging to the animal and affects them in a negative way. Others believe Seaworld is used to rescue animals and save them. The treatment of animals in captivity is cruel and should be stopped. Keeping animals captive is an appalling punishment.
Captivity has been a controversial subject for as long as it has existed. In the past decade, SeaWorld has been under scrutiny for their killer whale program and the number of incidents regarding them. Almost as big as a school bus, these animals are incredibly intelligent. Their brain’s are so much larger than humans. One may think that is because they are so massive, but body size does not determine brain size. Many animals much larger than humans have brains much smaller. Killer whales even have a center of their brain that processes emotions; humans do not have that. SeaWorld has taken social animals who swim almost 100 miles a day, to an introverted, almost immobile bathtub, baking in the sun. Nothing good can come from changing their
While SeaWorld and The Detroit Zoo keep animals captive, there are many positive reasons these places to be around. SeaWorld is known for its big shows to show off the animals of the sea. They put on performances with Sea Lions, Dolphins, and Killer Whales. When SeaWorld first opened they stole Killer Whales from the ocean for their own business sake, but now they are trying to make good of the past by researching Killer Whales health. By researching why they die or what makes them sick they are able to make life better for the Killer Whales they inhabited. Since they can not release the Killer Whales because they've been in captivity for too long, they can create an environment that is best for the Killer Whales. Space is diffidently a problem,
Animal entertainment is when you use animals to entertain people for their pleasure. It began in the 1960s, when corporations such as SeaWorld, captured wild animals from their natural habitats. In 1993, when Free Willy, a film about a captive orca and his journey to freedom came out, it was the first time a worldwide audience fell in love with these amazing creatures of the ocean. However, the issue with orcas being held captive is still an issue today. There is animal captivity all around the world, but the issue at SeaWorld, is one of many documentaries, articles and speeches, made to fight the neglect towards orcas in SeaWorld. SeaWorld’s entertainment has caused arguments and disagreements since the 60s.
It’s 2016 and we have people riding on hover boards, a woman is running for president and we have SeaWorld getting rid of Shamu. WAIT! Sea world is getting rid of Shamu? You don’t mean the most bodacious black and white sea creature in the entire world that makes dreams come true, do you? Well I am very sorry to say that this is one hundred percent true. And it’s all because of the animal rights groups that believe SeaWorld is not capable of caring for these animals. When in fact the theme park actually goes beyond the limit for animal care and treats their animals with only the best intentions. Because of SeaWorld’s delicate care for each and every animal, they actually get longer lifespans yet somehow people still believe that SeaWorld is bad at taking care of them. This is most likely do to the recent death of one of the most popular orcas and the recent airing of an incredibly false and biased movie “Blackfish”. SeaWorld loves their animals just as much as orcas like squid, I believe that SeaWorld is more than capable of taking care of their aquatic sea creatures and that animal activists and the “Blackfish” supporters are completely and utterly wrong.
Animals are not here for our entertainment. They are living, breathing, beings that deserve a certain level of respect from a civilized society that is aware and understands the behaviors of these creatures. It seems barbaric to me that we continue to imprison wild animals that are never going to be domesticated--a fact that we are well aware of. The educational benefits that society receives from organizations such as SeaWorld is an invaluable experience, but I believe there are more humane ways to engage communities in the education and welfare of animals that are not native to us. I think it is a hard argument to make that I would not care about the wellbeing of an animal just because I had not seen it up close and personal. There are a variety of other ways to achieve the same
SeaWorld rescues and saves over 27,000 sea animals each year. That is a lot of sea animals that are given a second chance at life. What do you think would happen if SeaWorld was not allowed to help these animals and take them in? They wouldn’t be saved and would die a suffery death. Sea animals should be allowed to be held in aquariums and marine parks (captivity).
The controversy of SeaWorld’s whale captivity is not only a threat to the animals themselves, but to the trainers and other whales in confinement as well. Three whales at the theme park had either agonized or even drowned a human, meanwhile, “It is not in an orca’s nature to threaten humans”(Orcas Shouldn’t Be Held Captive). The reason for the unexpected violence in the orcas is the fact that they have been abducted from their homes and brought into an environment millions of times smaller than what they were used to. It is unquestionable that “The artificial environment of captivity causes stress and anxiety for orcas, resulting in aggressive behaviors toward other whales and humans” (Orcas Shouldn’t Be Held Captive). Oak Bay’s Sealand of the Pacific held three whales, two females and one male in the same enclosure. Since the male was from a different family group, he was often harassed by the females. It is clear that the orcas at SeaWorld are not in a safer place than they were in the wild and should have rights to protect them from being kept as drudgers by places like SeaWorld. Even though the SeaWorld slavery case was turned down, PETA spokeswoman Colleen O’Brien said, “Today’s decision does not change the
The first reason why animals need rights are because they are being held captive from things they would be doing in their natural habitats like running, flying, climbing, foraging, mating, and being with their own species. Without these animals being in their natural habits these animals are becoming bored, cramped, and lonely (PETA). Capturing wild animals and placing them in captivity is not an enjoyable experience for animals, their freedom is being taken away and they are being locked away for an unknown period of time. In most cases zoos cannot provide a necessary amount of space for an animal for an example tigers and lions have around 18,000 times less space in zoos than they would in the wild and for polar bears it would be one million times less space. Animals that are kept captive are in very small enclosures that do not even compare to what they would be living with if they were in the wild. Animals with wing have them clipped so they are unable to fly away, and marine life animals have a minimal amount of what it would be like in the ocean. In captivity like zoos or aquariums these animals could become lonely by being with themselves, in the wild animals stay in a group with their own species but in captivity they are most likely to be kept in a smaller group. A study that had been conducted by the Oxford University showed that animals like polar bears, tigers, lions, and cheetahs obtain large amounts of
Did you know about 10 million animals get abused and neglected every year? Circuses and Zoos are prime examples of animal abuse and neglect. Animals like tigers, elephants, dolphins, and whales should be in their natural habitat. These animals shouldn’t be in small rusty cages, and crowded pools. There are also people who illegally fight animals for money; i.e. Dog fighting, cock fighting, etc. These animals fight for their lives, but the owners don’t care about whether or not they die, they just want money. Animals should not be used for our entertainment. Animals are not given the choice of going into the entertainment world. People gamble on dog fighting, cock fighting, etc. Wild cats and elephants in circuses endure abuse and neglect to be taught how to jump through hoops of fire. SeaWorld neglects their animals once they get sick, and these animals are given merely any space.
