Electronics Recycling. Electronic recycling is one consideration the company can do better with. Recycling in general lowers greenhouse gas emissions that are caused by manufacturing items for the first time. Recycling electronics conserves natural resources making cleaner air and water. The valuable resources computers and electronic components carry are metals, plastics, and glass. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), recycling a million laptops would give back enough energy for 3500 American homes’ electricity. A million cell phones would could yield 35,000 pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold, and 33 pounds of palladium. Instead of throwing out the old computers and blackberry’s, the company could simply upgrade the hardware or software and then recycle the parts necessary.
Many firms are learning that being environmentally friendly and sustainable has numerous benefits. (O.C Ferrell, Fraedrich, Ferrell, 2015). This could enable them to increase goodwill from various stakeholders and also save money in the long term. This will mean that they are being more efficient and less wasteful of resources, which will enable them to be more competitive by satisfying stakeholders. The CEO of
The word ‘sustainable’ has been chosen as a second criterion, as the philosophy sets out to be
In today’s society, information technology has developed to become an essential component of business processes within various industries and has irrevocably transformed the way businesses work by providing more productive, efficient and a more powerful means of producing resources. However, it has contributed to the world’s environmental challenges and caused detrimental effects on the environment via the pollution elicited by manufacturing, wasteful disposal of computers and components as well as the toxic chemicals used in the manufacturing process which can enter the food
In 1992, the Rio Earth Summit declared “The right to development must be fulfilled so as to equitably meet developmental and environmental needs of present and future generations” and in order to create sustainable development the mindset of the individual would need to be changed (Jick & Peiperl, p. 473). When organizations are open to new ideas and welcome transformation it enables them to meet the demands of the current and future environment, (Abbas, 2014). Thus, in 1998, before the merger of PwC and Coopers and Lybrand an opportunity was given to two alums of AIESEC, Middelburg and Shaw to deliver the following initiatives.
-Initiate and implement the ‘Go Green’ project to promote the sustainability features of our products to customers
General platforms could be printed on PCBs and user could upgrade their electronic devices without having to complete dispose of them. Design should be directed towards being more environmentally sustainable.
As technology increases through massive changes it becomes apparent that the individual user must also make changes that are environmentally safe. Green IT, also known as Green Computing, is the movement towards a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective use of power and production in technology. The crux of Green IT is to double or triple the bottom line investment costs by converting existing structures and systems to this more conservative mode of operation in green computing (eweek.com, 2012). The greening of information technology (IT) offers numerous ways for companies to
“Going green” is the spread of knowledge and practicing environmentally and ecologically friendly habits. It is providing tips and ways to be involved in sustainable living. This concept uses the terms reduce, reuse, and recycle. Goodwill exploits these skills. Their business revolves around collecting unwanted things and selling it to be used again. Most people shop there not knowing that they are doing their part and recycling. Job training comes into play because they teach individuals in their community skills that also enhance the recycling process. They teach them how to analyze objects, repair them, and determine decent prices. This is an investment for not only their industry but in the economic health of their community. Goodwill teamed up with Dell to formulate the Reconnect program. Dell describes the program as a program that puts "technology and jobs back into the hands of those who need them most” (Johnson). The program started in 2004 and opened 250 jobs. Reconnect allows people to donate old computers, this donation helps allow “technology, education, training and career services” to people who need extra help” (Johnson). This program abstracted more that 96 million pounds of potential waste. Both Dell and Goodwill meet high standards for workplace and environmental
Being “Green” is an economic and socially driven philosophy that many companies adapt in an effort to help improve the environment and attract more customers into buying their products. Companies claiming to be “Green” started when more customers became aware of the growing effects of global warming and began to show interest in helping the environment by recycling, reusing, and reducing their products. Two companies, McDonalds and Apple, sought to join the Green Movement. They make the company look “Green” by eliminating their waste products that mostly end up in landfills and by saving energy through renewable sources. However, their claims may be questioned because of the way their products are made and the transportation involved in shipping them. In the book, Soil Not Oil: Environmental Justice in a Time of Climate Crisis, Vandana Shiva expresses how companies play a big role in global warming due to deforestation and chemical emissions being released by the burning of fossil
The team quickly shifted and reevaluated the goals of our project and began to design a wide array of other research possibilities. The Team decided upon using the OfficeMax Green Office catalog to put together a set of specific product recommendations that contain prevalent information such as SKU number, pricing, and why it’s a green conscious product. The recommendations are to be a core component of the educational phrase of the project. The list of recommendations are based on and an expansion of a simplified list of environmentally-preferred products offered in the Bear Buy purchasing system at UC Berkeley. The team selected products that were the most environmentally preferable by looking into their recycled content, waste generation, third party certifications, and other metrics. With small roadblock surpassed, the team is ready for the next phrase of the project and Spring

Sustainability is a topic that has become very important in recent years. Sustainability is defined as, “the ability to continue a defined behavior indefinitely.” ("Finding and Resolving the Root Causes of the Sustainability Problem", 2014)
Sunchips provides not only a “healthier” chip but also uses renewable energy and a biodegradable bag and encourages consumers to join their eco movement. Other companies, such as Pepsi and Volkswagen, are joining in too. The “Refresh Everything” project launched by the major soda chain is attempting to make its product more environmentally friendly, and Volkswagen is taking even bigger strides with its movement, “The Fun Theory,” which encourages customers to be green while making the process fun (Park 1). Other major corporations jumping on the green bandwagon include Hewlett Packard, which boasts its recycling efforts and energy efficiency, and Ben and Jerry’s with its effort to “Lick Global Warming” and employ other eco-conscious practices (Rottkamp 1). While these strategies have shed light on being friendly to our planet, the fact remains that the large portion of our population simply is not embracing it.
Sustainability is one of the main keys to success for corporate companies in the 21st century. Research has shown that companies that successfully maintain sustainability within their companies usually have long-term success over companies that have not achieved sustainability within the company. One reason that sustainability is important for companies to have is because by addressing it can improve operational efficiency and also lower many costs. Another reason why that the concept of sustainability is important is because it merges social, environmental, political and ethical issues that can be detrimental to a company internally and externally, if they are not handled in an appropriate manner and incorporated into company policies or follow policies already in place. In order to avoid these problems from occurring or if they do occur they will not be detrimental and cause huge problems that cannot be fixed for a company, sustainability is very important to have in place already or strive to achieve. Sustainability drives companies to develop specific goals to address those social, environmental, political and legal issues. Importantly having the proper sustainability within a company can hopefully address all those issues altogether.
