Kisses from Katie, a memoir written by Katie Davis tells the story of how a teenage girl living a privileged life left all that she had ever known to follow the call of Jesus Christ to be a missionary. While on a brief visit to the third world Country Uganda, Katie falls in love with the environment and moves back permanently and soon adopts fourteen daughters. Katie uses different forms of authors craft while telling her story of her life in Uganda including, parallelism and imagery; these devices helped me write my own brief memoir. Although, Katie Davis and I have nothing in common other than our faith I was inspired by her authors craft while writing my own memoir. Throughout the book there is reoccurring parallelism. She has a scientific and above very empathic approach to the topic as she claims to be an introvert herself which I find fascinating and admiring as well. The story begins with an unremarkable suitcase full of books. What’s it all about I will reveal you now.
explores. They are also themes that she found in the Genesis narrative of Adam and Eve in
Many authors use a specific style of writing that sets them apart from other authors. The author uses African American dialect to go with that time in the novel. The main character tries to find true love. During the process, she has many obstacles to hurdle over. She compares herself to a bee and flower and lives by nature. In the novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Zora Neale Hurston uses motifs to foreshadow events in the future.
Imagine a memoir with skillfully alternating chapters between two characters that have distinct differences. It 's what sets James McBride 's chronicle from your average, everyday book as this story as he packs a healthy amount of content such as issues of race, religion, and identity into one paperback. Published in February 1998, it maintained the New York Times bestseller list for over 2 Years, won the 1997 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for Literary Excellence, was an ALA Notable Book of the Year, and has sold more than 1.5 million copies. It has been published in 16 languages and in more than 20 countries. It is an autobiography that sort of strays away from the common formula, however it still retains the core welcoming feeling you get when you can relate to the characters. McBride recognizes what a wonder his mother is when she raised 12 kids and gets her to open her secretive past.
In addition, Katie’s use of diary entries at the end of each chapter gives readers a better idea of her experiences in Uganda, and help to tie the novel together. In one entry titled “God of the Impossible” from Sunday, February 8, 2009, Katie writes, “This is my life. My real life. People say to me sometimes, ‘There’s no way that is real, right? You do know how to tell a story, though!’ Let me tell you, as I fall onto my bed at the end of the night, I look up at the sky amazed and wonder, ‘No way is this real, right?’ Yes. It is” (Davis 151). What makes entries like these so important in understanding Katie and her novel is that while Katie wrote her novel looking back on her experiences thus far, her diary entries were written in the midst of her journey. Katie’s feelings about her unique new lifestyle are directly revealed to the reader, giving much insight as to what Katie really thought about during her beginnings in Uganda. The
The book grew from an essay that Ashley wrote for a competition in which students were asked to write a moment in their lives which they learned something about themselves
In the words of Pauline Hopkins, “And, after all, our surroundings influence our lives and characters as much as fate, destiny, or any supernatural agency.” In the post-colonial fiction, The Poisonwood Bible, by Barbara Kingsolver, a family of six is being led blind into the Congo in the name of Jesus and left all their modern conveniences behind. To the uninitiated, the significance of Flannery O 'Connor 's Parker 's Back can seem at once cold and dispassionate, as well as almost absurdly stark and violent. Her short stories routinely end in horrendous, freak fatalities or, at the very least, a character 's emotional devastation. Flannery O 'Connor is a Christian writer, and her work is message-oriented, yet she is far too brilliant a stylist to tip her hand; like all good writers, crass didacticism is abhorrent to her. Unlike some more cryptic writers, O 'Connor was happy to discuss the conceptual and philosophical underpinnings of her stories, and this candor is a godsend for the researcher that seeks to know what makes the writer tick.
The book is a testimony to the strength and determination of her grandmother, her mother, and herself and their resourcefulness in recreating themselves during
Annie Proulx, an author best known for her award winning books “Postcards” and “The Shipping News”, uses metaphorical styles, the works of other authors to build characters, and pulls inspiration from past experiences or past events that can be justified when reading through her carefully and thoughtfully constructed books/stories.
The story is written like a diary of Paula Spencer’s good and bad memories in her life and gives the reader the impression that Paula is sharing her life story with us and she is also narrating her life as we read.
