Summary of Instructional Problem
Students attending the Supported Communications Program/ Intensive Academic Classroom (SCP/IAC) in kindergarten /first grade must become self-directed learners. Self-directed learners are according to Abdullah (2007), “responsible owners and managers of their own learning process. SDL [Self Directed Learning] integrates self-management (management of the context, including the social setting, resources, and actions) with self-monitoring (the process whereby the learners monitor, evaluate and regulate their cognitive learning strategies).” (What is Self-Directed Learning? 88). Rules change for each group setting and each subject area. Whole class group in gym may play tag; Whole class group tag at recess is against the rules. Given the importance of rules to staying safe, at school the focus of this needs analysis is on one student, whose behavior interrupts every group, every day as seen through observation and charting. Wile is unable to sit for more than 3 minutes at a time without needing a reminder of the rules for proper classroom behavior. Further observations of Wile lead to finding that he needs 4 to 5 reminders, during a twenty-minute group session, of the rules for proper group and classroom behavior (Taylor, Wile E Coyote IEP, 2014, p. 11). Wile is unable to transfer rules from one group to another, as is age appropriate for five year olds according to the Washington State Early Learning and Development Guidelines as cited above. This student, in the SCP/IAC class, needs the Intensive Academics this program provides, and a focus on rules is necessary so he can function in the program, keep other students safe and secure from his behavior, and keep Wile safe, secure, and happy now so he may transition into general education for 39% of his school day later.

Every setting should have established rules and boundaries for children’s and young people’s behavior. It is important when in a school setting that all staff consistently and fairly apply rules and boundaries for children and refer to the policies and procedures that are put into place. It is important that these rules and boundaries are followed from a young age and that the rules should be age appropriate.
As a student of education, I have been able to gather many ideas and opinions about practices and ideals I want to implement in my future classroom. My philosophies about education are still being formed and continually change with every class I visit and with every educator I encounter. My ideas, admittedly, come from random experiences and intangible texts, but as I gain more experience in the field through my courses, my philosophies about teaching will become more clearly defined. These few ideas I have now will undoubtedly be added upon as I enter student teaching and my professional career, nevertheless, they are concepts of which I hope to never lose sight.
I plan to establish discipline by warning those students who misbehave at first giving them two chances to act appropriately. If a student still misbehaves, I will cut their privilege to go outside down by five or ten minutes according to the severity of their inappropriate behavior. “Let’s create an AIDS/HIV-free generation”, which is not only a slogan that was proposed by President Obama but also a goal that I would like to achieve on my future career path. My practicum project at the Department of Health and Human Services was to generate dataset of new AIDS/HIV cases in Houston/Harris area required by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and then to use ArcGIS software to make a map describing the new diagnosed in Houston area. The final products can be spatially lined to other sources to enhance understanding of social determinants of health affecting populations impacted by HIV. This practicum experience let me realize that AIDS spreads so quickly is because most people have insufficient knowledge or misconception about the disease and prevention. Becoming a pharmacist to provide prevention service and educate people to improve their health and wellbeing is how I want to reach the goal of creating an AIDS/HIV-free generation.
These rules are displayed throughout the school and are referred to continuously by staff and children equally. We also have class rules that have been developed by the children themselves and are a positive device for encouraging good behaviour. The children can then monitor their own behaviour as well as the behaviour of other children in the class.

The development of self starts at a very young age. When a preschooler is asked how are they different from other children, they usually look at their self concept. Self concept is their identity, of their set of beliefs about what they are like as individuals. Most preschoolers give inaccurate statements about their self concept. They usually overestimate their skills and knowledge. Preschool-age children also begin to develop a view of self that reflects their particular culture considers the self. When implementing a discipline program, it is important that a teacher identify the difference between misbehavior and off task behavior. Misbehavior is a more serious action and should be treated accordingly. Misbehavior includes actions that are pre-meditated, habitual, unsafe, or demeaning. Off-task behavior includes actions like, talking out of turn or with other students, doing activities other than what the teacher has assigned, and lack of following instructions. While both types of behavior cause unwanted classroom distraction and should not be tolerated, there is an important difference between the two that must be identified. In the case of off-task behavior, the strategy to guide the student back on-task may require imposing a consequence as well as making an adjustment to the classroom management plan in order to re-route the student. In the case of misbehavior, imposing a consequence along with the addition of recruiting support from parents or administration may be needed to retrain the behavior.(Ross, 2009)
