Philosophy Statement
I believe that education is the key in developing today’s students into tomorrow’s leaders. Education is the basis on which individuals develop their self-concept and the desire to become more knowledgeable. I want to become an educator because I am interested in helping elementary students become active learners and also to assist with their social skills. I believe I can make a difference to many students as they start their educational foundation. I feel that all teachers should possess the desire to devote their hard work and efforts to their students’ educational success. When I become a teacher I plan to have my students work in cooperative groups because this allows them a chance to share their knowledge and ideas with their peers. Due to the fact that most students are on different developmental levels, those students who are of higher developmental levels can provide the other students with their ideas and perception of their knowledge. I feel that teachers should not be scared to let their students participate in group work because I think it is a great method of learning.
I will establish an authoritarian classroom to make sure the students behave. I will not be a strict teacher, but I will have to stand up enough to be in control of them. I will keep the classroom organized the particular way I described earlier unless the need to rearrange the room occurs. To help keep up students’ motivation I will try a variety of teaching methods and supplements to keep things interesting. I will try my best to keep a constant good attitude and not take out my personal frustrations on my pupils.
I plan to establish discipline by warning those students who misbehave at first giving them two chances to act appropriately. If a student still misbehaves, I will cut their privilege to go outside down by five or ten minutes according to the severity of their inappropriate behavior. Philosophy is defined by Webster as "Love and pursuit of wisdom by intellectual means and moral self-discipline" or "Investigation of the nature, causes, or principles of reality, knowledge, or values, based on logical reasoning rather than empirical methods." Teachers positively affect young minds. One of the greatest achievements a teacher can experience is watching all students, including Enlgish Language Learners, expand their knowledge to their full potential. I want to become a teacher because I want to make a positive impact on a person’s life. In the movie The Matrix, Morphis says to Neo “I can only show you the door, I can’t open it for you.” The door that Morphis is talking about is this incredible vast knowledge that is unknown to Neo. What better person to show, to teach, to inform Neo than his teacher, Morphis. You see, I see myself as Morphis, the teacher, whenever I step into a classroom. As I look across the room, there isn’t just one “Neo”, but there are thirty or forty Neos. This is an extreme job for someone that understands how hard it is to open that door.

With such great minds and an awesome influence that seems boundless, how can there not be references to the works of Thomas Hobbes and Immanuel Kant. In modern society, a high-quality education is imperative to the well being of those within that society. An essential part of a high-quality education is the function of the teacher in the classroom. How a teacher functions within a classroom determines how students learn, what students learn, and how they apply that which they have learned. Therefore, because I am seeking a profession in the field of education, I think I must consider the nature of students, the nature of knowledge, the value of an education, the techniques that I will be using in my classroom, the curriculum, and my future goals as an educator because by doing so I improve my abilities and performance as an educator.
The two quotes that I have listed above can in essence describe my feelings on education and teaching. My philosophy of education is almost wholly derived from my own experiences as a student and my observation from the placements. I believe that being a teacher is much more than just planning and executing lesson plans, but to encourage students to become more conscious of, and interested in learning, “transferring their learning” to more challenging and higher order thinking contexts. Having master of the subject content is a basic job of a teacher, to be a skilled practitioner of what I teacher is the main education philosophy. I want to focus on students’ cognitive development and teach them sufficient skills that prepare them for entering into the society. Apart from that, I think that a good teacher cares about the students’ happiness, well-being and life beyond the classroom. The most important development that has influenced my values of teaching was contact with my EAL teacher in high school who guided me in the direction of stopping abuses and bully. She mentored me throughout my three years of high school in Australia and helped me realise what kind of person I truly wanted to be. When I look back at my experiences with my EAL teacher, I want to be like her and inspire the other students just like she has inspired me. Philosophy started when human beings started to ask questions, about how and what things are actually, due to curiosity. The things that caused these questions to come about were the people started to realize that everything isn’t exactly what it appears to be.
From the time I was a seven years old till the current day, as a Sophomore at Benedictine University, I have wanted to become a teacher. The four years of high school, Oswego High School, I truly become passionate to become a teacher. I took the necessary general education classes, and my elective classes learning about child development and early childhood education. Once I graduated high school, I felt confident to become a teacher, but I discovered that special education was what I truly wanted to do. From the first day or first grade up to now, I have become a success student, which I can’t wait to become teacher I want to be an aspirational teacher one day to my future students.
Students get the chance to become more autonomous, but careful planning on the part of the teacher is necessary in order to avoid discipline problems. She or he needs to monitor constantly. All in all, the notion of cooperative learning is present in all group activities, provided they are thoroughly prepared and put into practice.
