Erin Ross ENG 305 11/16/2016 Mechanical Properties of Materials INTRODUCTION Before anything is built, first the proper materials must be chosen. Some people only consider the strength of a material when choosing. Other properties can be taken into account, though. The ductility or brittleness of a material could play a role depending on the project. The hardness of a material is important for durability. There are multiple properties that can describe a material, and engineers must consider all of them before deciding on a material. If a material is not properly chosen, the object being made may not work correctly. When in the process of making an object, properties must, also, be remembered. An archery bow, for example, would not work correctly if it were pre-bent. A bow starts out straight and is bent. This is done to create strain energy and this is what throws the arrow. Most properties stem from engineering stress and engineering strain. These are important when describing materials. Engineering Stress Stress is defined as force per unit area. Stress can be described as normal or shear stress. When the stress is normal, the material is stretching or compressing. Shear stress will shear the material. Normal stress gets its name because this stress is normal, or perpendicular, to the plane, while shear stress is parallel to the plane. Stress is described as a psychological and psychological and physical strain or tension generated by physical, emotional, social, economical or occupation circumstances, events, or experience that are difficult to manage or endure (Andrew M. Colman, 2015). Stress can affect all aspects of your life, which include your emotional, behaviours thinking ability, and psychical health (webmd, 2016). More than one in five Australian have reported mental health issue as a source of stress (psychology, 2014).
The definition of stress according to the Oxford dictionary is “A state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances.”

Stress is defined as an automatic physical response to any stimulus that requires you to adjust to change.¹
Stress is defined as the “non specific response of the body to any demand for change”. It was coined by Hans Selye in 1936. A highly subjective phenomenon. There are many signs of having/getting stress; Physical, Psychological, Behavioural and Emotional.
Stress is a nonspecific response of the human organism to any demand make upon it. It can influence the way we perform on tests and homework and how we act at home or work. There are different types of stress that can occur in the body. Acute stress is the body’s response to imminent danger. This short-term stress usually occurs when we are told we will have a quiz or have to give a speech in class. Chronic stress is a prolonged physical or emotional stress. This can cause damage to the body if the stress lasts for too long. Optimal stress is intense enough to motivate and physically prepare us to perform well but not enough to cause harm to the body.
The three types of stress are positive, normal, and negative stress. Normal stress is what we experience day to day. This type of stress is common for most people and does not have any major impact on our well being. Positive stress improves our performance and helps motivate us. Negative stress on the other hand decreases performance and can lead to both mental and physical problems.
Example, diamond - physical properties entail shape, size, weight. But features such as color, glitter, and hardness properties of the relations between the diamond and other things.
There’s a difference between a chemical and physical prop-erties/changes. Physical properties are an aspect of matter that can be observed or measured without changing it. The Examples for Physical properties would include: color, smell, freezing point, boiling point, melting point, etc. While Chemical properies may only be observed by changing the chemical identity of a substance. An example for Chemical properties would be rusting iron.

When people think of stress they think it’s a bad thing which isn’t true, some stress is just your body’s reaction to certain situations. At times it may seem like stress is taking over your body leaving you physically, emotionally and mentally hurt but what you can do is learn how to manage your stress to have a healthier and happy lifestyle. According to the Biopsychosocial Model of Stress, stress involves three components: an external component, an internal component, and the interaction between the external and internal components.
