According to Lady Gaga’s song, “Because baby I was born this way”, I find it astounding how Dalia Mogahed comments differently, referring to her spiritual faith as a Muslim. Mogahed states that being Muslim is a choice. I can agree as a Mexican American how many people think various opinions when they see an individual practice their faith accordingly and grasp their convictions. Despite the differences of religions, all spiritual practices receive negative thoughts and perspectives. A variety of people believe Muslims and so as for any other religion, that they are being enslaved or forced to display their faith. However, I strongly agree with Mogahed, we should join to fight the negative perceptions of faith “because baby I wasn’t born this
Has the criminal justice system always been unfair to minorities? Lauryn Hill, a famous songwriter talks about several things that opened the eyes of citizens everywhere across this nation in her album MTV Unplugged No. 2.0. In her song, “Mystery of Iniquity” she exposes the unjust court system and how everyone plays a part. The word iniquity means immoral unfair behavior. In the song Lauryn is trying to understand the meaning of the unfair behavior by the criminal justice system. She released this album in 2001, and she was not wrong for publicizing her views on this masterpiece of an album. We tend to forget that under President Clinton’s term, he enforced the 3 strikes and you're out policy, which placed more African American men in person for using crack cocaine than ever before. In the early 2000s, African Americans made up nearly 80% of a prison's population due to the federal crack cocaine laws and they also served more time in prison for drug offenses than their white counterparts. However, during this time period more than 67% (⅔) of crack cocaine users were either white or Hispanic.
That’s not the only way she categorizes herself, Mogahed declares herself as a “mom, a coffee lover… an introvert… a wannabe fitness fanatic [and a spiritual Muslim]”(2). Mogahed skillfully uses humor and normality to indicate that she chose to be a Muslim, she “wasn’t born this way”, like Lady Gaga would state (2). By doing that, Mogahed shows that she is an ordinary human being that was convinced to follow the Islamic religion, not forced. Furthermore, Mogahed states that she “wrestled with the Quran. [She] read and reflected and questioned and doubted and, ultimately, believed”. She trusted God and slowly surrendered as she deepened with every page of the Quran. Not only does that show her ability to rationalize her choices, but also shows the power of such a holy book filled with coherent words that define the Muslim faith. Establishing ethos, Mogahed provides research on a study stating that “80 percent of news coverage about Islam and Muslims is negative”. By providing facts, Mogahed presents a
Alison Bechdel ends her memoir Are You My Mother? with the words “But in its place, she has given me something else. She has given me the way out.” While this conclusion might seem flawed, it does a good job finalizing the recurring theme of spiderwebs in the novel. Just a few pages before (275), she depicts a scene of her talking about phobias while her mother throws out a spider. A connection can be drawn between the phobia of a real spider (that her mother has) and her phobia of what a spider represents, perfection and symmetry. Quoting from Adam Phillips, Bechdel says that, “‘Spiders are good to hate people with … she had to find a spider to let her do it.’” (275) The medium of a spider represents a recurring theme that Bechdel incorporates
I thought if I could touch this place or feel it, this brokenness inside me might start healing. out here its like i'm someone else, I thought that maybe I could find myself if I could just come in I swear i'll leave. won't take nothing but a memory from the that built me. Some of you might know what song this is the chorus of. This paper is about how my life relates to Miranda Lambert's song The House That Built Me.
I agree with the first quote “But not like Lady Gaga says because baby i wasn't born this way it was a choice” born a certain way is saying you have to follow the beliefs even if you don't want you. Making a difficult now in this generation can be hard because people would just be judgmental about not following it. Being Muslim is very difficult because it can mean that people see you different. Meaning born Muslim was not a choice for her because she was labeled some other rude names just for being Muslim. She had to accept her way of being and follow her belief because it's the way she has to go. She was not born to be Muslim that's the way she has to be brought into.
Bruce Springsteen’s autobiography and personal memoir, “Born to Run,” covers all of exactly who he is and how he got to be that way. From his family life to the making of his albums, from his mental heath to his concerts, it all coincides with one another, clearly identifying who he is as a person. This book would thrill even the most hardcore Springsteen fanatics and keep them on the edge of their seat. Born to Run adds little that’s new, but its narrative voice proves to be extremely insightful
“I wear it to work. I wear it to school,” she told The Signal about her niqab. “Many people have this misconception that, as Muslim women, we’re oppressed or forced to wear it. For me, it’s a choice. My parents never forced me to wear it.”
In Brandon Ambrosino’s “I am Gay – but I Wasn't Born This Way”, the author states his reasoning as to why he believes he wasn’t born gay. Ambrosino argues the idea of being Born this Way can damage self image, and he believes humans aren’t pulled from the womb with a set mindset for the rest of their lives. The author then goes on to say that humans aren’t gay because of a gene, but desires come from how our DNA interacts with the environment. Pop culture can generally influence opinions or how a person acts, especially when it comes to the born this way versus the chose this way controversy.
In Dalia Mogahed’s ted talk she explains what it’s like to be Muslim in America. Not only is it hard for her, but it’s also very hard for her family to be going through a situation that she went through on September 11, 2001. Dalia remembers every detail of what she went through on this horrific event. People saw her religion as a threat on this day and she will never forget the fear she went through.
Just like Taylor Swift's song, it started off with a blank space, 5 blank spaces.
All the mornings. Shayla go to the bus stops. The manager said to her that she needed to change her bus because somebody break the window during the early morning. She said that it was okay. Shayla was very tired because she wake up all the mornings before going to the bus stops. She always has sleepy during the half day.She likes to do exercise all the early mornings because she feel more comfortable. Every body said to her that she looks same that his aunt’s.
Just as the Constitution was written for infant America, the verse was written for a specific time, a time of war. A main reason for the resentment of Muslims is the inadequate understanding of the religion. Information I learned, enables me to speak against one of the most widespread prejudices today and disseminate my knowledge. Using one’s intellect also requires the practice of skepticism. Sister Rose’s documentary portrayed the manipulation of the youth. Just as children were taught to hate Jews, the rhetoric of today teaches many to resent Muslims. It is important to be skeptical about information heard. This is another way for me to speak out about prejudices. Informing others to remain skeptical and question information is significant. For instance, the media covered the San Bernardino massacre and fueled bigotry towards Muslims; another shooting occured in Georgia the same day but did not receive the same massive attention. Why did the shooting in Georgia receive little to no attention? It is important to remain skeptical in today’s very manipulative world. Sister Rose’s techniques for battling bigotry started with skepticism of the books children learned. By expanding knowledge and remaining skeptical it can easily be seen that all prejudices are
Mitchell Kimbrough’s “Sky” shows how life will pass one by. People oftentimes fail to make decisions or pursue dreams, but life does not wait for them nor run in reverse. The words and images of the poem, combined with the lyrics of Norah Jones’s “Don’t Know Why,” somberly explore the regret of missed opportunities as time passes.
From pop star sensation to fashion icon, Lady Gaga has influenced pop culture in many ways. After her 2008 hit single “Just Dance” the singer quickly gained fame for her unique techno pop music. From there on she has acquired a huge following and quickly took over the world of pop music. The singer then used the newly popular twitter website to tweet to her fans. She encouraged them to love themselves, spread positivity to one another, and most importantly funded her Born This Way Foundation in hopes of helping bullied victims. Not only did she use her music and social media account to influence her fans, she also made a broad fashion statement to motivate her fans to be weird, different, and unique. Many people still remember her famous meat dress she walked the red carpet in, while others reminisce on all the outrageous outfits she’s worn over the years. Over the last nine years, this pop star diva continues to top the charts with her music, spreading kindness, and walking the streets wearing memorable outfits.
My paper studies the three most significant and most commonly known western religion Judaism, Christianity, and Islam in terms of the role that the woman played and a brief synopsis of the religions itself. Religion is a system of human though which usually includes a set of narratives, symbols, beliefs and practices that give meaning to the practitioner’s experiences of life through reference to a higher power, deity, or ultimate truth. Judaism, Islam, and Christianity are the only religions that are based on a single creator and that are why they are called western religions. These three religions are monotheistic faiths practiced by about half of the world’s population. Believers of the three religions are found on every continent
