The first Levi’s jeans, that were manufactured entirely for women were introduced in the West of the United states of America in 1934 according to the official Levi Strauss & Co website “http://www.levi.co.uk”. The company changed its brand to “Lady Levis”, which was venerated by the western American women working on ranches and promptly captivated women in the eastern part of the USA. Furthermore, women were wearing jeans with the purpose of showing the gender equality.
A picture in the Appendix 3 illustrates the women, who creates a thought in customers’ mind, as if she is actually shouting the caption out loud “Come and get ‘em”. Even though, the image can be judged for the hidden sense of sexism inside, because the woman is cooking there,
In the 1830s there were innovations in roller printing on textiles which introduced new fabrics for women. Men wore padded shoulders and women wore colossal sleeves to emphasize on a thin waist. A new fashion arrived; low boots with elastic insets. Men began wearing “greatcoats” for day wear. 1830:
In the introduction of Chapter 1 “Consuming Passions” “The Culture of American Consumption,” it talks about how American popular culture is grounded in consumption. With the media in our hand, it is a huge influence towards the advertising world. With how styles of clothing have been changing over time, this talks about how from the earlier times wearing a simple type of blue jeans can change between who wears them over the years. As stated, “ By the 1950s, however, blue jeans began to bear an additional class significance as “casual wear” for middle-class Americans.” (72). In 1970 these pants have then become a simple fashion wear. They have also been introduced as a hipster type wear. Then in 1980 through the early 2000s, baggy jeans were
Jeans were made in in the 1850s. The place they were made was in New York. Yet, Strauss, the creator was not pleased with the money he was getting so he moved to California because he wanted to get some of the California Gold Rush. With him knowing Jeans were made for work he tried to get miners to get new jeans to mining. Not only was that a great choice, but it did better than he expected as he was not only changing his generation then, but now he changed my generation. He never thought that he would have gotten such success just from moving his creation to a place that people found that jeans were perfect for mining. If he would know how much he did for the fashion in American clothing he would be proud. Mainly because it is the number one
People indulge in clothes shopping every day and often do not consider the changes that occurred throughout time that led to the development of mass produced clothing for both men and women. As a result of the Civil War, the production of clothing shifted from homemade clothing to clothing mass produced in factories. After the Civil War, Urbanization along with new developments, such as advertising and the new, wealthy urban class, increased the demand for mass produced women’s clothing and clothing stores that made clothing readily available.
Although this illustration has no reference to the novel, it is the picture that I chose to use, depicting the woman and her way of getting what she wants. As the audience, I have control over what I am reading and can express myself in any way that I would like, without having to worry about what society thinks of my views and opinions.
The art form that I find captures my emotion the most would have to be a novel (literature). It was a close choice to me. While I love visual art, like photography and painting, I find a good novel to be completely captivating. I have loved to read since I was a child. I remember reading the book "The lion, the witch and the wardrobe" by C.S Lewis when I was about 7 or 8. The mental pictures that I created while reading the book were so vivid that it was, literally, like watching a movie. When the movie came out, many years later, I was comparing their creation with my "mental movie.' They did an okay job but mine was better! The picture was so clear that I initially couldn't remember whether I had read it or watched an earlier version
Levi received a letter around 1872 from a loyal customer of his. Jacob Davis was a tailor from Reno, Nevada loved his design of pants and continued to buy from Levi because of the pant’s quality. He had a proposition for Levi. In this letter it proposed on collaborating on a new design for pants were using metal rivets on the sections that go through the most strain, would make the pants last much longer. Jacob came to Levi because Levi was already established as a businessman and was familiar with the trade. Also he needed someone that was familiar with the trade to put this idea into action. Levi agreed to patent the idea. On May 20, 1873, the patent was given to Jacob Davis and the Levi Strauss & Company and the “ blue jean was born.”
To accentuate the hips even more, slit side pockets were present (Payne, 256-257). Subsequently, the 1960’s brought the emergence of miniskirts, which was then a public shock for it was not considered tamed. Minis were pioneered by Mary Quant and made trendy by Andre Courreges (Murray, 112-113). Meanwhile, pants suits for women were popularized in the 70’s. They were first introduced as skinny and tailored, leaving little space for legs. Then they evolved into a flared leg style, with a wide opening at the bottom, or bell bottoms (Payne, 261). “Pants appeared in every form imaginable, from divided skirts and culottes to the classic, pleated-front tailored pant and the baggy ‘Fred Astaire’ version.” (Murray, 116)
With other companies starting to encroach upon the Jeans market share, Levi’s decided to introduce a new product. With the goal to gain profits, Levi’s pursued diversification with the new product. This product was formal clothing for men.
London fashion designer, Mary Quant, had introduced her very own mini skirts shortly after Andre Courrages had released his line of clothing in which by then Quant’s mini skirts soon became part of a new “mod” style (Pendergast). The popular mini skirt that revealed the legs made women feel a little uncomfortable because of how short it was so they often worn the skirts with go boots (Pendergast). And because of Jacqueline Kennedy, first lady at the time, simple, elegant designs along with casual clothings were also very popular. Casuals like slacks, shorts, and fitted tops were accessorized and worn with a scarf tied around the hair which would be bouffanted along with big sunglasses to add a nice touch to the look for young women as men’s casuals were like t-shirts and blue jeans (Pendergast). Having then, “men’s suit became sleeker and were often accessorized with bright, bold shirts and high-heeled boots” (History of 1960s). Like those blue checked Tommy Nutter suits, the flamboyant look signalled by wider trousers and lapels opened up a new door to the hippy fashion (History of
During the Roaring Twenties, women gained more rights, and this allowed them to roam out of society’s standard of a woman. This was a time where “women bobbed their hair, ventured out to speakeasies and dared to shorten their hemlines” (Jamie). These types of women were known as flappers. A studies professor, Rosanna Hertz, said that flappers were rebels, and fashion played an extensive role in allowing them to express their freedom. Women were supposed to wear clothes that covered their legs, “even [if] flapper dresses were knee-length, it was still enough to raise eyebrows” (Jamie). A New York designer named Regina Kobler was a woman of this time period who designed these new styles of clothing. Her work is showcased “in the small show at
The colonization of the Americas was a time defined as when Europeans began to explore and colonize the Americas around the 1400s, but disrupted many native civilizations in their way. The Europeans realized that they needed some type of work force to help start this new world after killing off most of the Native Americans, which was a starting point for the Atlantic and triangular slave trade to support plantations in the New World. Throughout the hundreds of years that the colonization of the Americas was occurring, many European nations were able to benefit from the colonization because of either there gain of land, gain of resources, or a better trade route for that nation, but for these nations to benefit,
One company that faces these cultural issues daily is Levi Strauss and Company. Levi Strauss and Company is a large American company founder in 1853 and is well known for its denim line. Currently Levi Strauss and Co. has operations in over 110 countries with over half of its corporate revenues coming from outside the United States. In American history we have all heard complaints of companies in the garment industry hiring underage employees outside the United States and poor working conditions. Levi Strauss and Company has not been left out of these accusations.
