: Larchwood Lake may not ever be the same again. The story about Larchwood Lake is not that uncommon. Without doing extensive research into possible things that could occur by lowering the lake level, the Larchwood Lake Homeowner’s Association destroyed the very thing they were trying to protect. Carelessness and poor planning are not the only root causes however. There are a number of reasons that led to the degradation of Larchwood Lake that happen to relate to more macro level environmental issues. Those reasons are poorly designed environmental policy created by the E.P.A., poor understanding of lake ecology by the managers of the land, and false confidence in poorly planned ideas. By looking at how these factors contributed to the degradation of the lake, hopefully we will be able to make more ecological sound decisions in the future.

It’s almost as if you are swimming in beer. My favorite thing about the lake is that the lake floor is pure sand. I hate going into a lake and having bottom be all mucky. The sand floor of Big Sandy feels wonderful on the feet, and this is where the name Big Sandy came from. The lake also has beautiful shorelines. Most often the shores lead into sloping hills full of trees, but there are a few areas with natural sand beaches that stretch for hundreds of yards. Wildlife is always in abundance at Big Sandy. Everything from bears, deer (which I have actually seen swimming in the lake on a couple of occasions, to huge eagles, hawks, and turkey vultures. Fishing is also excellent for most kinds of fish in Minnesota, and there are some big uns in there as well (just last summer I saw a huge Northern Pike sticking its head out of the water).

The Lake is the place to be on a hot summer day, but how is it supposed to be any fun when the lake is drying up each day.

Being a student athlete at the nearby University, located in the heart of Bellingham, I myself use the lake once, if not twice a day for rowing practice. Considering my constant presence, I have become quite disappointed in the water quality of the lake as well as the debris which roams the murky waters.

In the village of Amelinghausen in North Germany, there is a man-made lake named Lopausee. It serves as a nature reserve and recreational center. The water in the lake is of good quality and some species of fishes and marine life thrive in the area. Swimming, fishing, and other water activities are allowed in the lake. There is also a restaurant nearby so finding a place to eat won't be a problem when you visit the place. You park is also a short walk away from Lopausee which is a playground for kids. Every year the lake serves as a stage for the openning of the annual Heath in Bloom Festival. You could expect jaw dropping fireworks display and mesmerizing decoration throughout the lake. The Rim Village Historic District has a gift shop, visitors center, and lodging for people who want to stay there. Also, there’s hiking trails and an observation station for a staring down at the trees and the mountains surrounding the lake.
