Could “changing your old metrics” overcome the two main problems (the two root causes from question 2b) of Le Petit Chef? Please explain your answer.

Answer
Because the balance in the portfolio of projects undertaken has changed. Now the development portfolio is focused on improvements, modifications and additions. True product development has taken a back seat so the result are less than they were several years ago.

Driver 2 – reacting to customers’ and salespeople’s urgent requests. Hereby the product is not new at all, but merely a repackaged, slightly modified or tweaked product. They are vital to keeping the sales force and the customer happy; they also maintain the product line fresh and up-to-date. This is applicable to the Le Petit Chef case because Le Petit Chef had to meet with the diversity of preferences and requests in the European market that had led to the proliferation of a wide variety of microwave oven models catering to local tastes and preferences.
Driver 3 – a resource crunch. Whereby the focus has become “doing more with less”; and so managements fail to commit the necessary resources to new product development, cutting vital technical and marketing staff. This is applicable to the Le Petit Chef case as Gangé stated: ‘we have thirty engineers working on seven product development projects in our microwave R&D division, while also supporting the manufacturing department’s requests for minor
