Leadership is one of the most desired traits a modern day worker can possess. It does not matter what trade or profession an individual belongs to, leadership is desired by all employers. Leadership plays a major role in the profession of nursing. Nursing is a profession that requires organization, collaboration, and teamwork of all nurses to achieve the ultimate goal of a happy patient. None of these concepts are possible without the structure and guidance of an effective leader on the nursing staff. The health care environment is constantly changing and producing new challenges that require effective leadership in the profession of nursing every day. There are numerous leadership styles and methods around the world, this paper will examine the definition of leadership and the most common types of leadership. Leadership has been defined as “the process through which an individual attempts to intentionally influence another/group in order to achieve a goal” (Wong & Cummings, 2007, p. 2). Leaders must function as workers, and administrators with leadership qualities, while still meeting their budgets and running effective units with high functioning and happy staff members. The purpose of this paper is to address and identify the best possible practice of nurse leaders in the nursing arena. When considering effective leaders in the nursing field nurses must acquire leadership skills in order to meet the steep demands of the positions held as advanced practitioners. The healthcare industry has mainly focused on meeting the continuing education requirements to keep advanced certifications of nurse leaders however an effective leader who is faced with a plethora of complex leadership challenges will focus on enhancing their personal arsenal of leadership techniques through seeking leadership development opportunities catered to the provision of safe and effective care for patients and their staff. For the place of employment in question, it is clear that nursing leadership is needed. To that end, there must be a program set out to ensure that nurses are getting the leadership skills they need. The purpose of this program will not only provide nurses with the skills they need, but will better prepare them to be leaders for nurses who are new and just coming into the facility. All nurses who are part of the facility and nurses that will be hired by the facility in the future can benefit from this program, because leadership has great advantages for nurses (D'Antonio, 2010). When nurses also focus on leadership, they are able to provide management functions like decision-making and governance. This gives nurses extra skills and teaches them to manage facilities and help make things better for the nurses as a whole (Judd, 2009). Often, when nurses need something from management that can make their jobs significantly better and improve their ability to care for their patients, they are unsure how to ask for what they need. Leadership skills can help them with that issue.
Leadership may mean different things to different people, the consensus opinion of experts in this field is that leadership is using power to direct and influence activities of people to achieve set goals or targets. Nursing leadership is all about every nurse providing, facilitating and promoting the best healthcare services to client and to the public. Leadership is a shared responsibility. (CNO 2012). The nursing profession need leaders that can build the capacity of nurses through mentoring, coaching, supporting, developing the expertise and management skills of nurses to make a difference to the quality of patient care at all levels of the profession ( McIntyre & McDonald, 2014 ). At the core of every leadership either political or managerial is power and how the leader uses it. While it is practically impossible to lead without power, how the nurse leader uses this power not only determine the leadership style but also the results or outcomes of what is achieved through the process.
All the same, a lot of nurses never realized of becoming a leader. There have been nurses who have leadership qualities in areas of designs, implementations, and evaluations, as well as advocacies” in the current transformation (Cohen, M. & Walker, A. 2010). With this quality they have restructured and reshaped their abilities to function in different areas of health system. It means nurses are using their leadership skills to perform as collaborators with other professionals. There is essence of having competent leaders in health care in other to achieve the goal of creating a change in health care. These leaders are not only at bed side but are also conspicuous at other areas such as executive level and boardrooms. Nurses work together with other experts in different disciplines of health care, and are responsible for submitting their contributions to produce high quality care.
Leadership is a shared responsibility of all nurses, regardless of job title, experience level, or area of practice. A strong nursing leader is an individual who thinks critically to evaluate their care, implements evidenced-based practice, advocates for their patients, practices within their full scope, and works to improve their skills throughout their career (Canadian Nurses ' Association, 2009). According to the Canadian Nurses ' Association 's position statement on nursing leadership (2009), it is vital that the "development of nursing leaders … begin at the onset of every nursing education program and continue throughout the career of every nurse" (p. 1). Although student and graduate nurses are in a position of learning, discovery, and development, they still have the potential to be strong leaders within their practice environment.
Healthcare organizations and nursing implications are constantly changing, is important Nurse Leaders to interpret implications in the delivery of healthcare system. Nursing Management and Nursing Leadership while both having similar attributes are two different concepts, with two different characteristics, roles, and responsibilities. There are multiple Management and Leadership qualities, in which ethical considerations must be addressed. As new changes are so frequent in health care the Institute of Medicine have recommended a new form of leadership called Transformational Leadership, which have shown to be very efficient for Nurse Leaders, it involves strategies to effectively communicate their vision for the future with others. Leadership is shown in many different ways depending on the leadership style one portrays. Nursing clinical leaders also not only have to know how to adequately lead a team, but have the knowledge and skills to do so. I chose an article called Clinical Leadership: A Call to Action that spoke about the essential knowledge and clinical skills that are needed to assume a leadership position. In this paper I am going to summarize the article and then give examples of how I plan to gain and use this information when I assume a leadership role as a nurse.
Leadership has been a topic of interest and a subject of contention in history and literature for decades and has attracted considerable attention from both academics and theorists alike (Xu, 2017). A plethora of definitions exist, proposing several different perspectives and interpretations, Northouse (1997) views leadership as “a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal”; Stewart (1996, as cited in Barr and Dowding, 2012) similarly, identifies leadership as “discovering the way ahead and encouraging and inspiring others to follow”. Both definitions emphasise a persons ability to influence, motivate or engage others to follow direction which might explain why interest in the value of leadership is particularly keen in the health care sector and in nursing in particular (Xu, 2017).
In order for any given workplace to function in its maximum capacity, a good leader must take the wheel. Within the health care setting, nurses lead in different aspects to ensure high quality care is delivered towards the patient. The first part of this essay will focus on leadership and management with the aim of developing knowledge from the discussion of theories and strategies to the provision of quality care. In the last section I will reflect on how knowledge gathered about leadership and management theories, principles and best practice concepts benefit my nursing leadership development.
