Before attending introduction into leadership I assumed that I was a very good leader. I attained the leadership award at my high school, in the softball program I was known as a leader by both my coaches, teammates, and in newspaper articles. Given that I have all these awards for being a leader I assumed that there was nothing else to learn about being a leader. I know that you can always improve if you practice something, but I never realized that there are different ways you can lead and still be effective. Throughout the course, it has opened my eyes to different models, theories, and ideas that can help me improve my skills not only as a leader but as a follower as well. I learned that there are different leadership styles along with followership styles, self-awareness along with personality dimensions, and motivation models along with theories. Being a leader you are always open to improvement, and some tactics that have worked in some situations do not apply for all. This class is the perfect class for individuals who are looking to improve their leadership skills. Probably the most influential leadership model that stood out to me the most would be the Hersey and Blanchard model. The model “…focuses on the characteristics of followers as the most important element of the situation and consequently of determining effective leader behavior” (69). The model deals with the variation in follower readiness, and the leadership style which is best applied to the
There are two kinds of people in this world, followers and leaders. Followers are the people that never take a leadership role in any activity. "They are more valued by followers and have higher performing teams." (Cherry 2014) However, leaders are the ones that use their leadership skills to make a difference in this world, such as presidents, teachers, or even college graduates. Leadership is not something you can learn from a book, but you have to gain this skill through experiences such as holding an office, organizing an event, speaking in front of people, or participating in a leadership program.
Every person has some kind of good and evil traits within their personality, but what really defines good and evil? People from different cultures could consider different traits to be “good” or “evil” or even a little of both. There are times in life where a person has to make certain choices that could be interoperated both ways. In this paper, I will be analyzing different characters in the story “The Good Women of Suzutan” and what type of role each personality plays within the story in order to give the audience a chance to come up with their own ending.
With any course, especially one with a focus as broad as leadership, the material covered may include a range from useful to impractical. It is impossible to learn the skills necessary of an effective leader completely out of a book, it takes the application of them to understand. The development of leadership is vital to successfully moving forward in any career, so it would be beneficial to cultivate these skills academically.
While attending here at Brazosport College I have received a job that requires me to be a leader. By setting goals and targets with the other working member to reach a certain number of applicant. It is also displayed through setting a motto that mistakes can happen
There are many different leadership styles and different ways to learn about becoming a good and effective leader. Clark (2016) states in his article The Art of Science and Leadership “Becoming a good leader is not easy, but by learning the correct leadership skills and knowledge, putting them into practice through quality learning activities, and then adapting them to different situations, will put you well on your way to becoming a leader.” Ada Sue Hinshaw was one of the above said successful leaders of her industry.
One of the biggest lessons learned from this course is that to be an effective leader, you must have a diverse skillset. I’m not sure if there is any one magical component or characteristic in being a great leader. One influence during my review of the literature was that; although easier for some, I see leadership as something we must continually improve upon. This is in contrast to my belief during my first day of class, when I thought leaders just
The difference between management and leadership is that management is concerned about structuring the organization and placing individuals in the right positions that are able to perform the functions of those duties and monitors the progress of the people's performance. Leadership motivates the people to understand the vision of the organization and to help them to move closer to that direction, and to help them rise above what obstacles that may stump them.
Leadership roles have taught me many things throughout my primary school education. I have had a few leadership roles throughout my education including New Tech Ambassadors and National Honors Society. The most valuable lessons I have learned include that of patience, persistence, and austerity. I have learned that people need you to continue and press them and continue to help and lead; to be persistent in your leadership helps those who follow you. Leadership has taught me to have patience. Though, not to be lax. You must still be persistent. Lastly, to be respected as a leader it is best to be stern but still approachable. An austere presence helps lead the best teams throughout tough situations.
Over the course of this class I have learned about the kind of leader I am as well as the kind of leader I prefer when being the follower in a situation. Whether or not it is common I am not sure, however I react to a different leadership style than the one I implement myself. Above I have created my own leadership model that I feel covers all of the aspects it takes to being a successful leader. There are three elements to being a productive leader in any given situation and it starts with you as a person. In order to be a leader I feel that you must first understand who you are as a person, you need to know what drives you to succeed, and what motivates you. As the leader of an organization, business, or large group you have to be able to
One valuable tool I have learned to use that helps me be a good leader is the website Out of the Box Coaching™ and Breakthroughs with the Enneagram by Mary R. Bast, Ph.D. 2005 she describes nine leadership styles and the faults and descriptions and as well as development skill.
After completing my Advanced Organizational Course I have a better understanding of the vital mechanisms of being a great leader. I have a better understanding of the suitable steps to become a better leader in my professional life. My leadership ideas center on my performance not necessarily on what I say. This course has made quite an impression on how I view leadership. After reading the list of leadership functions by Yuki, Wall, and Lepsinger, 1990 it opened my eyes to what type of leaders management fits into. The fourteen functions are organizing and planning, problem solving, informing, clarifying, monitoring, motivating, recognizing, consulting, supporting, managing conflict and delegating, team building, networking, developing and mentoring, and rewarding. I believe all of these functions are critical for the success of an effective leader, the three most important ones to me are problem solving, developing and mentoring, and motivating. Problem solving is the fundamentals of what leaders strive for. Leaders must be able to minimize the rate of problems instead of waiting until the situation gets out of hand in an effort to endure momentum for the group. Developing and mentoring is an essential leadership skill; It is extremely important to help others grow and become more effective in their positions. I am more aware of what really drives me to be the best I can be in becoming a better leader. I feel very inspired from this course and have a better
Throughout my life, I have multiple opportunities to experience the qualities of being a successful, effective leader. These opportunities have originated throughout the experiences of my career in athletics, playing on both high school and college football teams, being a group leader in my church, and also being a part of a family. I have gained substantial qualities that constitute a good leader through these life experiences. Some of the most valuable leadership characteristics that I have obtained, and strengthened, on day-to-day basis, include knowing how to be an overall team player, how to be a healthier listener, how to have more patience and understanding, how to be not fearful of constructive criticism, how to be outspoken, and how to be an effective problem solver. Even though I have made countless strides in particular areas, I have additional room for growth, in an effort to become an even better, effective leader.
Prior to attending the Business Internship course, my knowledge and understanding on successful business leaders was very limited. Although I had heard of countless success stories in business, I had never actually understood what it took to achieve such measures of success. However, it wasn’t until we had the privilege of hearing from four different business magnates in weeks 6 -9. Each of the business leaders gave an hour’s seminar and which was aimed at providing insights into their personal lives, working experiences and the core essence of 21st century business leadership.
The three peers that I sent my PAM assessment to had very different opinions me, and I just wanted to destroy them, but the best reaction that I can give to this matter is I categorically do not think I’m that bad, I feel uncomfortable, and I do not believe that I should feel guilty of over aggressive enthusiasm, I characterized and illuminated what I thought of myself regarding my strengths and weaknesses, and to collaboratively be conscious of the prognosis that my peers do not share my vision is devastating to me. Nonetheless, disagreeing about diverse facts is one thing, but when the disagreement is about an assessment it personal, and I realize it’s their opinion, and as I re-evaluate my assessment I feel I have to re-evaluate my
In class, so far, we have discussed many different topics about leadership. One being different leadership theories. The one that I feel most represents the leader I want to be in the future is servant leadership. When we discussed servant leadership it was defined as this leadership model is based on the leader and the followers wanting to serve others. Basically, this means the servant leader you put your focus on the needs of others before your own. The followers goal is to serve clients and the leader’s goal is to serve the employee and implement the organization mission statement. The leader supports other employees by noticing their goals and provide the proper support to help them reach those goals. This
