Weekly objectives and assignments will be clarified on a week by week basis. While the syllabus is fairly complete I reserve the right to make changes or additions throughout the semester. If any changes or additions are made they will be accompanied by at least one week’s notice so that you will still have adequate time to prepare. Reading At least half of our reading will come out of the text. This text is fairly light and as a result gives a good overview of the general issues and concepts of leading organizations without burdening readers with too much information. Make an effort to read through each chapter once, paying particular attention to the cases at the beginning and end of each chapter as they illustrate the concepts in concise detail. The text will serve as a roadmap for any lecture or discussion material. In addition to the text I have assigned several cases and articles to help you further analyze the concepts. Most of the cases/articles we will review are listed on the syllabus (some will be added). Assignments/Summary of Tasks 1) Case Analysis Report (due in class the week the case is due for discussion) Summary: During several weeks we will examine a business case involving team leadership. In each case, we will be able to see leaders and/or team members struggling
One of the most important aspects of leadership is self-knowledge and particularly awareness of your priorities and values. As a leader it is imperative to improve your leadership ability on an everyday basis. Great leaders have great strategic dreams, visions of what could be and what they think should be. In this paper I will be discussing my plan and the theories that support my plan. I will also be discussing my leadership strengths and weaknesses
My aim is to become an effective team leader who can blend the qualities and advantages of different leadership styles appropriately. To meet this main goal, and evaluate my professional development plan, I should ensure the following. In my team leadership, the team of champions can work cooperatively until the work completion. There should not be any problems that hinder the team activity or the quality of work. The team should be able to meet the goal of the project, to help the unit to be ever ready to face any inspections (Polzer, 2003). To ensure the success of the plan, I would communicate with the team and keep in contact with them as frequently as needed. This would give an idea whether the team activities are progressing as expected
Make sure each member knows what is expected from him/her. Making sure the goals of each individual is communicated clear and precise and that access to resources is made available.
Is leadership more imperative than management? First, let’s appreciate what a leader and a manager are or do. According to (Daft, 2015), leadership is an influence relationship among leaders and followers who intend real changes and outcomes that reflect their shared purposes (p. 5). Therefore, a leader enjoys a high degree of influence and soft skills and appeals largely to the intrinsic needs of their followers, subsequently the extrinsic needs of their followers come as a result of their work.
A leader is defined as a person with responsibility to influence one or more followers and directing them to achieve a set objective (Sethuraman, 2014). In order to achieve that set of objectives effortlessly, effectively, and efficiently, the most important and valued trait of a leader is an effective leadership styles. Effective leadership styles are required in every organization at every level to be successful. The success or failure of an organization depends on the quality of leadership particularly on the part of top management. An effective leadership style can be developed on the basis of understanding of the situations (Sethuraman, 2014). Top management should know which leadership style is needed based on the situation to be most effective to gain trust and respect from their employee. There is no single method of influencing the behavior of employees for every situation. The employee’s level of knowledge on the task and can determine which leadership style that will be most effective for the situation. Preparing leaders to lead
The skills required to manage a business through its progression from start-up through growth, then through maturity and eventually through decline are varied, challenging and underscore why transformational leaders are so valuable to any enterprise. The intent of this paper is to evaluate the various leadership skills needed to navigate a company through all stages of organizational growth. Transformational leaders with a very high level of emotional intelligence (EI) have the ability to successfully manage risk, uncertainty and turbulent economic environments while still attaining corporate objectives (Flamholtz, Randle, 2007). The baseline of skills for this analysis begins with the requirement that leaders have a high degree of transformational leadership ability, incouding proven EI skills to successfully navigate a company through these transitions (Flamholtz, Randle, 2007).
I believe you learn about leadership by acting as an example. You should be prepared to do the things you are asking others to do by getting on your hands and knees, if need be, and get your hands dirty. This engraves a picture into the mind of an employee or subordinate to what type of a manager you are. In this paper, I will cover the role a manager plays in an organization describing four functions of management: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. I will then describe three traits: conceptual, human, and technical, which an individual must possess to become a successful manager within an organization and how they fit in with the four functions.
In today's ever changing society, leadership is a skill that will have a profound impact on business operations in the future. Our society of late has been marred by unethical actions that were the direct result of terrible leadership. Leadership will be needed to navigate this turmoil we have subjected ourselves to. Currently, there is a crisis in Europe as nation after nation is attempted to avoid default. Just yesterday (April 13, 2012), the cost to insure Spanish bonds against default rose to the highest level since 2008, as investors worry about the governments ability to pay them back. In essence, it will cost $500,000 annually to buy $10 million of protection against a Spanish default using a five-year credit default swap or CDS contract (Euro, 2012). It is going to take leaders to help abate the influence of Europe's sovereign debt problems on the rest of the world. It is also going to take leadership to ensure that Spain, Italy, Portugal, and France do not need to ever require outside funding again. Through this course in Leadership and organization behavior, I believed I have acquired the foundation needed to lead a group of individuals to a common objective. I also believe I have acquired the needed skills to help motivate and challenge my team to achieve superior results.
Where leaders learn to lead? The largest aspect of learning for a leader comes from experience. Often times leaders will be thrown into a position and learn on the job. While other leaders will simply learn as they climb the company ladder. Leaders additionally learn from examples. The examples they learn are from others that have done well in a leadership role; therefore, they will take these examples and apply them to their leadership style. Lastly, leaders learn from books and school. Attending leadership classes at the local university is a great start to acquiring skills to become a leader (p. 6).
Appropriate techniques would be applied to identify ideal learning styles. Finally, a personal development plan (PDP) would be produced which would be strictly followed to meet the aimed leadership development skills.
Today 's corporate executives face the enormous challenges in a rapidly changing business environment. The increasing complexity of the environment, the higher degree of globalization, the changing of social expectations, and the increasing diversity of talent demands require business leaders have the ability to play multiple roles at the same time. Today 's business leadership responsibilities can no longer be limited to technical knowledge or technical bureaucratic routes. On the contrary, business leaders must develop a variety of capabilities to master the different leadership skills and use these skills flexibly in the changing business environment. Only in this way can the business leaders be able to recognize trends, respond to
Leaders should take time and prepare the list of what is discussed in the group and those who will attend the discussion. Leaders are urged to follow steps to achieve practical group discussion, actions such as group assembly. It is achieved through careful selection of group members. Leaders should choose members who are positive minded can participate in the group.
