1. Leadership style can have five levels: highly capable individual, contributing team member, competent manager, effective leader, and executive. The highly capable individual makes productive contributions through talent, knowledge, skills, and good work habits. The contributing team member contributes individual capabilities to the achievement of group objectives, and works effectively with others in a group setting. Competent manger organizes people and resources toward the effective, and efficient pursuit of predetermined objectives. Combining these the management and leadership qualities would create an effective virtual environment. Leadership can never replace management; it should be apart of management. A leader with initiating-structure style would most likely have more success because there would be a method to successfully combing the leadership qualities with the management qualities.
11. I tend to see myself as having more leadership qualities than management. The personal characteristics of a leader have physical characteristics: of energy, and physical stamina. For intelligence and ability a leader has intelligence, cognitive ability, knowledge, judgment, and decisiveness. For personality a leader has self-confidence, honest, integrity, enthusiasm, desire to lead, and independence. For social characteristics a leader has sociability, interpersonal skills, cooperativeness, ability to enlist cooperation, tact, and diplomacy. For social background a leader has education and mobility. For work-related characteristics a leader has achievement drive, desire to excel, conscientiousness in pursuit of goals, persistence against all obstacles, and tenacity. Personally, I do feel that I can improve these leadership qualities I possess, and with time I can improve on my management skills.

A leadership philosophy helps to define and let others know what you expect, what things you value, and how you act as a leader. Different styles of leadership are needed for different situations. Every leader needs to know when and how to display a particular approach of leadership within a group. Leadership strategies define every leader’s personal leadership style. Three leadership styles of a counselor are the following: authoritarian style leaders, democratic style leaders, and laissez-faire style leaders.

An effective leader has many factors that enable them to be successful. Some of the key characteristics of an effective leader are passion, charisma, dependability, problem solver, communication skills, and multi-tasking abilities. Marquis and Huston (2015) describe four types of leadership styles; autocratic, democratic, laissez-faire, and bureaucratic. The autocratic leadership style deals more with acquiring control and accomplishing tasks rather than relationships (Marquis & Huston, 2015). This type of leader generally makes independent decisions and uses force to implement power. Democratic leadership differs by having human relations and teamwork as the main focus (Marquis & Huston (2015). This leadership welcomes open and two-way communication. Laissez-faire leadership has minimal established policies abstains leading (Marquis & Huston, 2015). The bureaucratic style leans on established rules and policies and lacks security (Marquis & Huston, 2015). Most of the time, the rules are inflexible and the relationship with staff is impersonal. Stacey Feiner once stated, “For those of you who really want to give critical thought to your unique leadership style and foster genuine followership, learn from what’s out there and weave it into something meaningful and authentic.” (Feiner, 2015) For the last two weeks, I have spent time self-analyzing and soul searching to identify the qualities I bring to a leadership role. Many of the core values important to me also align between the participative leadership style and laissez-faire leadership style. These values include working in a team environment, empowering others to make decisions and providing support for those decisions, keeping an open mind to new ideas/suggestions, and being involved with my team members on a daily basis.
