Leadership Style
Leadership is a process by which a person influences the thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors of others (Agard, 2011, p. 330). Leadership models can enable or hinder an organizations success. Additionally, leadership styles impact how effectively organizations reach their goals. When leaders understand their dominate leadership style, they can identify their strengths and weaknesses and gain insights on their abilities, values, and beliefs. In addition, understanding a leaders dominate leadership style provides them with an opportunity to improve leadership effectiveness enables them to develop their approach.
Transformational Leadership
Transformational leadership is currently the dominant leadership theory (Barling, 2010, p. 1). Transformational leaders facilitate transformation within an organization. They are driven by a strong set of values and a sense of mission. They are described as expressive, empathetic, extremely charismatic, deeply inspirational, and immensely visionary. In fact, their enthusiasm permeates an organizations culture and inspires and motivates followers to perform at optimal levels.
In addition, transformational leaders empower followers by encouraging them to be creative, innovative thinkers and to realize their full potential. Further, they set clear, ambitious goals which inspire followers to go beyond their minimum task requirements to achieve extraordinary success. Lastly, they are highly visible leaders that spend
Transformational theory is relevant to this study since it informs the independent variable. It asserts that transformational leadership creates positive change in the followers whereby they take care of each other's interests and act in the interests of the group as a whole therefore contributing to overall organization performance.
Transformational Leadership empowers or enables its followers. The leader engages with the follower in a way that both the leader and follower transcend to a higher level of motivation and morality (Nicholls, 1994).
Northouse (2013, p.186) defined transformational leadership as “a process whereby a person engages with others and creates a connection that raises the level of motivation and morality in both the leader and the follower.” It is a process which often incorporates charismatic and visionary leadership.

Transformational leadership describes a leader moving followers beyond immediate self-interests through idealized influence (charisma), inspiration motivation, intellectual stimulation, or individualized consideration. Transformational leaders are change agents. They influence the mission and objectives to make way for a brighter future for the organization. Followers are motivated to do more than is originally expected because of their feelings of trust and respect for the leader.

Transformational leadership. Burns (1978) is recognized as one of the earliest theorist on transformational leadership, who introduced transformational leadership over 30 years ago. Transformational leaders are perceived as leaders who uplift their employee morale, subsequently uplifting the entire organizational. Transformational leaders are known by their capacity to inspire followers to forgo self-interests in achieving superior results for the organization (Clawson, 2006). Avolio and Yammarino (2002) shared Bass’s explanation of transformational leadership as leaders who act as agents of change that stimulate, and transform followers’ attitudes, beliefs, and motivate from lower to higher level of arousal.
Transformational leaders are the leaders who are able to show people their visions and why they are passionate about specific things. People follow them because their passions and visions. They are able to motivate their followers and make them feel empowered using their own beliefs. Leaders who never ask to be followed; people follow them because their mission is so wonderful. The followers become inspired by the messages the leader talks about.
Napoleon Bonaparte said it best. A transformational leader has the uncanny ability to inspire his fellows to perform at their best. A transformational leader, is essentially a motivator. Through his actions, charisma and passion, the potential of the team becomes kinetic by the energy he or she exudes. The best leaders will never lead you in to a situation that they would not lead themselves to. According to Bass (2011), transformational leaders are charismatic and engaging. They can charismatically connect and communicate their vision in a way that motivates and excites others to want to embrace the vision of change and feel included in its successful implementation and outcome. Transformational leaders effectively implement change through communication, vision, team building, and inspiration.
Transformational leadership is a leadership style that promotes change as well as improves performance in the organization as a whole as well as on the individual employee level (Phaneuf, Boudrias, Rousseau, & Brunelle, 2016). James MacGregor Burns first introduced transformational leadership in his book titled Leadership that he authored in 1978. Burns defined transformational leadership as leadership that stems from one’s core unchanging values and beliefs. Burns believed that transformational leaders not only bring together their followers, but also positively influence their follower’s values and beliefs in a way that brings about positive change (Humphreys & Einstein, 2003).
A TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADER is a person who stimulates and inspires followers to achieve extraordinary outcomes (Robbins, 2007)It has been shown to influence organisational members by transforming their values and priorities while motivating them to perform beyond their expectations (Rowold, 2007)Increased levels of job satisfaction & reduced turnover intentions are consequences of transformational leadership. It is all about leadership that creates positive change in the followers whereby they take care of each other’s interests and act in the interestsof the groupas a whole (Warrilow, 2012)

People will willingly follow a leader who inspires them. To inspire followers leaders share values, ethics, standards and their long term goals. Transformational leadership is a style of leadership where one or more persons engage with others, to share their vision, raise motivation and morality which benefits the society or the organization.
