Being a leader is more than simply holding a leadership position or having the ability to lead. Everyone is capable of being a leader, but not everyone exercises his or her leadership abilities. Each person’s idea of leadership is different. My idea of leadership has developed over time, and being a member of the President’s Leadership Class has helped me develop my philosophy of leadership further than what it was two months ago. My personal philosophy of leadership is the ability to effect change through leading by example, taking initiative, and encouraging others.

A leader sets a course of action and ensures that everyone follows the action. Leading can apply to leading oneself, other individuals, groups, organizations and societies. Leadership is a big deal in today’s culture and in history. A good leader with great leadership has the potential to lead a sports team to a championship. It can be the deciding factor in a war between two nations because whoever has the better leader in the war with the right strategies will come up with a victory. A right leader in the government system can also lead the nation to prosperity and wealth or, can break a nation and drive the nation into a state of depression. What is a leader? This question has been asked throughout history and yet there is still no globally consistent understanding of what it means to be a great leader. Meriam Webster’s Dictionary and the Macmillan English Dictionary both define a leader as someone who goes out in front and shows the way. However, do leaders always lead from the front? Renowned generals did not succeed by charging at the front line of battle. Instead they devised a plan and led their armies from the rear. In the course of history leadership has taken many forms. From Caesar to Jesus, Hitler to Lincoln, great leaders have had an incredible impact.

According to Webster’s Dictionary, leadership is the power or ability to lead other people, the act or instance of leading. I believe that Leadership is an art, the art to get others to follow and accomplish a common goal or task in a harmonic manner. A leader can be shown in all kinds of shapes and forms. To be a great leader many people believe it consists of modeling the way, inspiring a shared vision, enabling others to act, and encouraging the heart. Over the course of me learning how to become a better leader and being in leadership roles, I’ve learned that all these are very necessary to be a great leader.

Leadership is defined as the ability to accomplish a set goal(s) due to the act of inspiring and motivating a group of your peers. Former United States president Dwight D. According to Dictionary.com the definition of leadership is the position or function of a leader, a person who guides or directs a group. Historical figures have many different famous quotes on leadership reflecting what they believe about the function of a leader. The 40th president of the United States, Ronald Reagan states, "The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things."(Reagan, 1975). A famous leader in the African American civil rights movement, Martin Luther King Jr. quotes his view of a leader, "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."(King, 2016). Business executive Donald Mcgannon states, "Leadership is an action, not a position." (Mcgannon, 2008).

Brigadier General Diana Holland once said, “lead the way you want to be lead, follow the way you want to be followed, and be a team player.” This quote really resonates with me because being a leader means also knowing how to be a follower and be a part of something bigger than yourself. I believe that being a leader doesn't always mean being at the front of the line. Being a leader means supporting, encouraging and empowering others to become their own potential.

While many complexities exist in understanding how to lead and how to thrive in leadership positions, leading essentially consists of directing and controlling a group. In an environment where anyone can learn the skills required to become an adequate leader, many are missing the key to becoming an exemplary leader - a relationship with Christ. Christian Leadership is unique in that it seeks to mimic the style of the greatest leader of all, Jesus Christ. Christian leaders know that the dominion associated with leadership truly means selfless love for those under their care. Phillip, I enjoyed reading your post and like to follow-up what you stated. Leadership is a well-studied topic and it is correct that the focal point in the leader follower/dynamic. However, “a rose by any other name is still rose”; individuals who follow are also called; Christians, disciples, brothers, sisters, groups, teams, people, and the list goes on. It can also be argued that that followers have been around for a long time just called by another name. Hence, Vugt (2006) argues that whenever a group of people come together, leader – follower relationship naturally develops (p. 354).
