People are creatures of emotion not of logic, we act on how we feel, not thinking what may happen from actions. Instead of criticizing, humanity should try to show more sympathy and honest appreciation. “William James said “ The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated.” (Carnegie 18). This desire makes young girls wear make-up and buy the latest styles. It makes the wealthy people donate large sums of money to parks and other buildings to have their name put on it, so that one day their name will be remembered. This desire, and need for appreciation has driven many people to insanity. For some reason they have come to the conclusion that the only way they can receive attention. When a depressed young adult reaches for a razor blade to cut horizontally across their wrists. Hoping to release some of the pain they are feeling, deep down they are hoping to get caught to get attention and sympathy. If they wanted to take their own life they would have cut their wrist vertically, because at the hospital they can not sew the veins back together when they are cut vertically. This desire to feel important and appreciated was even realized by some of America’s most famous producers. “Florenz Ziegfeld, the most spectacular producer who ever dazzled Broadway, gained his reputation by his subtle to “glorify the American girl.”” (Carnegie 25). He made
Warning signs for self-mutilation can be wearing covering clothing when it is warm out, and not letting people touch where they might be cutting themselves. It was once believed that people who self injure were just doing it for attention but recent studies have proven otherwise. A quote from the research from the CASE study in Europe stated that “The findings of this study show that adolescents who deliberately self-harm often report both cry of pain and cry for help motives. The majority of youngsters wanted to get relief from a terrible state of mind and/ or wanted to die with their act of self-harm. Although the study shows that there is also a cry for help, this type of motive seems to be less prominent than the cry of pain, which is inconsistent with the popular notion that adolescents deliberate self-harm is ‘only’ a cry for help (Scoliers, 2009). With this knowledge we need to make sure we help the children who are not only doing it to

In 1988, an evaluation was completed in Kentucky, where Korn reported massive amounts of “appetite loss, weight loss, visual disturbances, and heart palpitations” (Shalev 11). This evaluation was done in a maximum security prison for adults, so when you transfer the results to children, they would have extreme setbacks in their growth and physical development. While in the walls of solitary confinement a fifteen year old girl, named Melanie H., reported how she came to the solution of cutting herself by, somehow, acquiring staples and beginning to carve letters and symbols into her forearms in order to show her own personal apology to her family and herself for what she has done, expecting people to understand her cry for help. Another girls said that she would cut herself with staples and show the officers and the staff, but they wouldn’t do anything in order to help her mentally and especially physically. She was denied medical treatment for her self harm outbursts, and she did it only to get attention and for someone to talk to her and understand what was happening. The Single most important thing I learned in chapter 3 was reciprocity and the four main components of it: mutuality, nonjudgmental, honesty, and respect. A report on the interpersonal skills of listening, questioning and feedback and the benefits of these in the engineering field
Dale Carnegie’s book, How to Win Friends and Influence People, discusses 30 principles that are essential to the life of an individual and how they can contribute to their career success. These principles, if applied with good effort, can be useful to one’s daily life in business. The first standard Carnegie discusses is to not criticize, condemn, or complain (80). In my life, I have seen this principle in action through the way people treat and interact with others. It is important to not be critical of the efforts of others because they are working hard to be successful like everyone else and we must be conscious of the impact our words have on people around us. I have found myself degrading the efforts of others out of jealousy which caused me to feel guilty about the words I chose to say. The words a person chooses to say can mean the difference between the continuation or termination of a relationship.
