The issue of legalizing same-sex marriage is one of great controversy. There are some people who think that gay people have no rights and should never be allowed to marry. Other people believe that gay people are just like anyone else and should enjoy the same rights and privileges as heterosexuals do. People opposing gay marriage argue that a couple of the same sex getting married would redefine the word marriage, the purpose of marrying is to procreate, and they should settle for Civil Unions instead. I feel that all fifty states in the U.S. should allow same-sex marriages. Only in the states of, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, California, along with the District of Columbia are gay …show more content…
Additionally, children raised by same-sex couples have been shown to be just as good as with the children of opposite-sex couples in their psychological adjustment, mental abilities and social functioning. A reason why the Vermont same-sex union battle had so much nation press is because legislators were responding to a court order, while some ended up losing their jobs to same-sex unions. Religious, government, and social groups have debated this issue and it is taking a long time for it to be fixed. Same-sex marriage has some very distinct facts and values important to one's religion, morals, or even what his or her family thinks of the gay lifestyle. There are many opponents of gay people as it is, and they all have their reasons to dislike the idea of letting them get married.
Another main argument is that the word “marriage” means the union of one man and one woman. This is a long-standing theme of most major Western religions. Under a proposed bill known as the Defense of Marriage act, marriage is defined as “a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife.” The government says that every citizen of the United States shall receive equal rights. The Defense of Marriage Act prohibits the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages; in my opinion this act is immoral and unjust because it restricts the rights of
Same-sex marriage should be marriage because everyone is equal, love is always right, and people have a right to choose their own soulmates. First, equality is a basic right, which means everyone should get the same treatment. The restriction against same-sex marriage is an offense to the dignity of lesbians and gays, because it limits the range of relationship options open to them (Mello). The limit of same-sex marriage is against homosexuals to enjoy the same right as heterosexuals. It is not fair for homosexual to get the different treatment. There is a law to declare that legalizing homosexual marriage is to achieve the basis of equality come true. (Albertson).

Homosexual marriage is one of the old but controversial issues around the world. Compared to the past, it seems to become a more open debate among people. At the same time, people seem to be more swayable than before, but towards the gay marriage, different voices have still been hovering in the air. Gay people and their supporters have been striving for their rights to get married legally, while others who against gay marriage have never stopped deterring it.
Proponents to the legalization of same sex marriage came up with a lot of reasons as why gay marriage should be legal. The major ones are that not allowing same sex people to get married prevents them from getting legal benefits like hospital visitation, health insurance, family leave and more. They also argued that they are fighting for their rights the same way African Americans were fighting back in the day, and that gay marriage will not threaten our society. For centuries, religious and political leaders had protected the sanctity of marriage as the union of a person with a member of the opposite sex for procreation in a consensual and
On June 26, 2015, the US Supreme Court ruled that gay marriage is a right protected by the US Constitution in all 50 states. Before that decision was made, same-sex marriage was already legal in 37 states and Washington DC, but was banned in the remaining
Marriage within the United States has always been focused on one man and one woman being together for the remainder of their lives. To have marriage be centered on the union of a man and a man or a woman and a woman is preposterous. Marriage is needed to keep our society prosperous with the production of children who will one day take over the roles of their parents when they pass on. Marriage between couples of the same sex will not produce children, thereby defeating the purpose of marriage altogether. It is argued that same-sex couples could increase the number of adoptions of needy children in the United States, this much is true, but belonging to a household where the heads of the house are of the same-sex could cause problems for the child in the long run. Bullying and teasing in school will undoubtedly surround these children daily, it is not worth the emotional pain that will inevitably befall these children to give them a home in a same-sex household, no matter how loving these parents are.
Same-sex marriage is a controversial and very serious legal issue that needs to be resolved. I disagree with the individual state rulings. The laws honoring and protecting heterosexual married couples remains the same in 50 states.
In recent years, the debate over gay marriage has grown from an issue that occasionally arose in a few states to a nationwide controversy. People have opposing viewpoints on whether gays should be allowed to marry or not, and the sub topics that coincide with gay marriage. People wonder if it is okay for gays to marry, and if so, should it be legal everywhere? In the United States I 2009, some states like Iowa, Vermont, and Connecticut allow gays to marry, while states like California, Florida, and Arizona have constitutions that prohibit same-sex marriages.
Gay marriages should not be legal in any state. Same sex marriages should not exist. The whole purpose of sex is to reproduce and same sex relations can not reproduce in any way.
In 2004, Connecticut, Iowa, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, New York, the District of Columbia and two Native American tribal jurisdictions have legalized same sex marriages. As the years go on, more and more same sex couples will continue to fight for their right to marry who they choose and more states will eventually allow same sex couples their rights to marry whomever they choose (Koppelman, 2004).
The debate about same sex marriage is because the same sex couple won’t be able to have kids of their own. The pro and cons about marriage is that every person, at some point, of their adult hood is looking for happiness, love, and someone who cares for them in return. If the couple resides in United States then the government will give health care, Social Security and provide a nursing home for married couples. Also, a perk to legalizing same sex marriage is putting a stop to
As the society changing, the history of marriage also changes. Marriage is legally recognized union of two people as partners in a personal relationship, but do those two partners always have to be a man and a woman? Most people believe that homosexuals should be granted equal rights as heterosexual couples. Being as an important social issue, same-sex marriage has become a hot topic of public debates in the recent years. For over the past decade, public support for the same-sex marriage has quickly risen. The United States is one of over twenty countries that allow gay and lesbian couples to wed. I believe that same-sex marriage should be legalized in all countries for several reasons, such as being an issue of equal rights, separation of church and state, no negative effect on the heterosexual communities, increasing in child adoption, and decreasing divorce and suicide rates.
Lyrics form the song, "Get Up, Stand Up", by Bob Marley If you listen to the TV or radio talking heads, it would be easy to think that America is permanently in the grip of some major political issue. That there is always some great political division at stake
For a little over two decades, same-sex marriage has been a highly debated topic. The debate centers around if gay and lesbian couples should be allowed the right to enter into a legal marriage. While civil unions have more support than same-sex marriage, they
Same sex marriage has been the topic of an ongoing controversial debate in many countries for a long time now. This is an important issue because it concerns the basic principle of human rights and basic morality. Same sex marriage should be legalized; it is a violation of human rights, there are many misconceptions of same sex individuals, and allowing same sex marriage to be legalized would provide a boost to the economy.
