The beautiful scenery is only one of the many aspects that stood out to me from Lewis and Clark. The calm atmosphere will enable me to concentrate in my studies. Apart from its beautiful scenery, the small classroom sizes will empower the interaction between my peers and professors. It is extremely comforting to know my potential professors are eager and available to help me gain knowledge. As a potential student, I look foward to the involvement in the nurmerouse student oragnizations available on campus (e.g., Pre-Health Professionals Club, Spanish Club, and Biology Club) . If admitted to Lewis and Clark, I will bring diversity and determination to reach my academic
The teaching of Native American history and the colonization of America is often misconstrued, with the complete, and “actual”, story almost always being concealed behind the bare minimum of historical evidence. For a country more concerned with impartialness now than ever, the truth about past relations with Native Americans should be a key component in the education of students across the nation. The realization and acceptance of this nation’s disreputable past involving indigenous people, though threatening a US legacy that most people believe in, will provide an essential and clear understanding that could lead to future equality and peace.
The importance of the Lewis and Clarks expedition for America was immense. It changed the future country by strengthening the America’s claim to the areas north of California which would become Washington and Oregon. Lewis and Clark had great success which might not have happened without peaceful cooperation with the Indians. Lewis and Clark proved there was no Northwest Passage but showed the feasibility of an overland route to the Pacific Ocean. This opened up the area to further exploration and commercial ventures. The expedition collected the first general survey of plant and animal life and of the different cultures of the many Native American tribes they met. Lewis and Clark provided some of the first scientific descriptions of many new species of animals, including the mountain goat, prairie dogs, antelopes, and grizzly bears, With the details on local wildlife that was brought back there became great interest in the fur trade. During Lewis and Clark’s travel, which was over eight thousand miles in less than two and a half years, they only lost one member of the expedition. The Lewis and Clark expedition was a success at a cost of around thirty-eight thousand dollars, in terms of achieving its goals. Lewis and Clark and Corps of Discovery made the expansion west possible, with expanded knowledge about American Indians, geography, biology. Over the next two centuries, Americans would travel across the land west to settle new cities, claim new land, and shape the
I believe Lewis and Clark is one of the best locations for a school in the country: the campus is in the middle of the forest yet Portland is just 10 minutes away. Portland is an unique city which offers many opportunities for students looking at internships and job opportunities. Lewis and Clark is also an amazing location for exploring the outdoors. As an individual who loves the outdoors, the campus offers unparalleled access to nature. I am intrigued by many different subjects and the liberal arts education offered at Lewis and Clark is a means to exploring everything. Finally, because of the diversity of the student body, and variety of states and countries represented I am interested in attending Lewis and Clark. College is an
Christopher Columbus had a lot to do with the American exploration. Christopher Columbus was born in Italy in 1451. He studied geography then went out to sea on a journey. He was trying to find a new route from Europe to Asia. He did this because the Europeans wanted spices but it cost too much to get them over land from India and China. He is the man that figured out the world was round. In 1492 he got the king and queen of Spain to finance his journey to find a new sea route. They bought him three small ships.
When the white Spaniards first explored the New World in 1492 with Christopher Columbus, everything was new to them and the Natives. The Natives probably felt that these people were invading their homeland. They were most likely frightened , as well as curious, because they have never seen these people before. If it were me in their situation, I would not feel very comfortable. There would be so many different thoughts and emotions going on in my head. As I, and my whole tribe, would probably have the same thoughts and emotions running through our heads. Since we have never seen these types of people in our lives, we would be more defensive and cautious.
Sitting next to the window of Cyber Café, I enjoy the raining view of the lake. Taking a small sip of coffee, I feel so happy that I made the right choice. When I visit Northwest Vista College campus for the first time, I have felt in love with it. Because of beautiful lake and good educational system, I decide to apply for this school as my first stepping-stone to my career goal in my life.
The start of history lessons for numerous students in grade school was likely that of the legend of Christopher Columbus and his expedition to the new world. These lessons are a prime example of consensus history and propaganda that many people were exposed to while growing up. Left out of the narrative were the parts about “piracy, brutality, slave trading, murder, disease, conquest, and genocide” that were carried out by Columbus and his armada (p.96). That, however, did not fit the ambitious and idyllic narrative that the consensus history authors and scholars preferred. Ultimately, what should be taught are the ugly truths behind the expedition of Christopher Columbus. Colonialism has reached all corners of the world in a similar
Meriwether Lewis and William Clark are one of the most important historical figures in US history. In the novel, Bold Journey: West with Lewis and Clark by Charles H Bohner, Hugh McNeal makes it seem as though Lewis is very ill-tempered and likes to have things his way and has a lot of pride. However, Clark is as more laid back and is easy going and is naturally calm. However, history videos, articles, and other historical references portray them as both well-tempered educated men with amazing people skills.
Saint Louis University has always been one of the colleges that I viewed as a high-class, expensive institution; however, I never pictured myself attending such a university. On a whim, I applied to SLU this past spring. I soon discovered I had been accepted. Not only had the college accepted me, I was awarded with multiple scholarships. After much deliberation, as I had been accepted to other numerous colleges and universities, Saint Louis University was my final decision. The university’s proximity to home and renowned science department were the main components that swayed my decision.
The whole thing was basically about the history of culture and discovery. It is also about how Christopher Columbus changed things. They first talk about what was important about their culture and how became a part of their culture for example they say that corn was invented thousands of years ago and they also say it was invented by man because at first it was just grain then they had turned it into corn. They also talk about how their culture became mixed in parts of south America because Zapotec people were all the same but after awhile they brought African Americans as slaves but after awhile they said that slavery should not be allowed. When that happen African Americans were still living there so they had created mixed children with other
In many a voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, various resources from the New World of North America had been transported and distributed throughout the pre-established European countries founded before the discovery of the Americas, the Old World. In great means of success, the resources expanded in popularity and caused many economic and agricultural effects on the inhabitants of the Old World. The great man behind such growth was Christopher Columbus, an Italian seaman who, on commissioned ventures provided by the country of Spain, modified the economic and agricultural establishments of the Old World. The importation of multiple New World resources brought to the Old World many modifications regarding the agricultural focuses, economic successes, and the diets and lifestyles of the European population.
Friday, February 5th, I awoke with my suitcase packed, ready to travel to Eau Claire, WI to spend the weekend with my daughter, Chloe, at Chaos Waterpark. I could not prepare myself for the events I was about to endure.
I found our Tuesday class to be very informative on human nature. It is easy to say that the Spanish were "evil" for their treatment of the indigenous people; however, I'm afraid that statement is too black and white. When dealing with humans in regards to history or any subject matter black and white simply does not work. Human history is a full spectrum and in order to categorize a historical event we must first understand the inner-workings that lead up to this point. We need to understand the thought process behind European entitlement. Columbus' and Ferdinand's letters were crucial in revealing the nature of the Spanish mindset. Columbus spends a great deal of time describing how welcoming the indigenous people were to both him and his men "they believe that all strength, all power, in
Sacagawea was a significant, admirable historical figure, though not many knew of her contributions. She was a Shoshone Indian who worked as an interpreter, guide, and peacemaker for the Lewis and Clark expedition. Through these essential roles, she became a vital part of the journey to find territory. The efforts of Sacagawea lead to the success of the Lewis and Clark expedition which greatly impacted the expansion and advancement of America.
Throughout history there has been a debate about whether or not Christopher Columbus discovered America. One thing that is certain from his travels from 1492 to 1502 was the spread of western influences. Thus, many scholars has come up with more research and evidence to debunk the Italian explorer as the one who discovered the Americas.
