All three of the authors use literary devices in their own way to do a variety of things, whether that be getting a certain message across, exaggerating something, or showing the narrator’s reactions to certain things. In all three of the stories, the authors make use of flashbacks. In Big Boy, the author provides a flashback of his mother telling him that everyone defecates. He does this to show the reader that he understands that fecal matter is normal, but he still doesn’t want to be blamed for the situation he was in. In Tuesday’s with Morrie, several flashbacks are provided between all the chapters to give the reader some insight as to how Mitch and Morrie’s friendship grew. In The Last Lecture, the author talks about his days playing football as a teenager and he often references back to things his coach did. He talks about his coach’s antics in order to get across that everything can be a learning experience. Another device used by all three of the authors is anecdotes. In Big Boy, the author recalls a time when his mother told him about how everyone defecates. He does this to help the reader get a better understanding of how he feels in the situation he is in. In Tuesday’s with Morrie, an abundance of short stories about Morrie’s life before he was diagnosed with ALS are provided. This is done so the reader can relate and learn from …show more content…
In Big Boy, the author seems to be panicked and upset. His reactions work to explain his dilemma. In Tuesday’s with Morrie, Mitch notices quite a few differences in Morrie from their first Tuesday together to their last. Mitch’s reaction to the progression of Morrie’s condition shows how much Morrie really means to Mitch. In The Last Lecture, the author tells his readers about some of the the things his coach did to his team and how he taught them. His reactions to what the coach did show how the coach helped him grow on a personal
2. What writing strategy does the author use that you think is effective, and why? For example, does he use examples, or does he make
Many stories have the ability to engage the reader by using different literary devices. These literary devices make the reader relate to the characters and make the story interesting. Like in the short story "A Brief Moment in the Life of Angus Bethune", written by Chris Crutcher, where there are allusions, character foils, and verbal irony used in order to engage the reader, make the characters come to life, and develop his theme.
There are many writing techniques/crafts that authors write about in their story. For example, stories could have metaphors, flashbacks/flash forwards, or tone. But, in the story The Tell-Tale Heart, Edgar Allan Poe uses symbolism, revealing actions, and descriptive language to show why the narrator wants to kill the old man.
In the novel tuesdays with Morrie, a man by the name of Mitch Albom goes to visit his old sociology professor, Morrie Schwartz, after hearing word that Morrie was dying from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or most commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. During their last few Tuesday meetings Morrie gave Mitch serious advice on life death and everything in between. This paper will address various concepts in sociology that are portrayed in the novel with the help of the symbolic interactionism perspective.
It is within the human nature to be interested in other people’s experiences. Whether it be with reality shows or blog posts, people like to hear different incidents through diverse perspectives. Writers take advantage of this curiosity and try to tie experiences into their works. Many times writers will include experiences of their own in order to convince their audience of their perspective on a subject. These personal experiences are done in order to make an impact on the audience and it is written in a certain way to make it the most efficient for the readers. The use of personal anecdotes is effective when details are described to the point where readers can create their own opinions, when they are used as the main topic against an argument as opposed to being an unimportant detail, and when it has the ability to appeal to the audience’s emotion.
The poem Tuesday 9:00 AM by Denver Butson is a beautiful piece of writing that uses metaphors to describe the baggage everyone carries throughout life. The setting is extremely plain and ordinary, a bus stop on a Tuesday morning, but the word choice is very dramatic. The narrator tells the story from an omniscient point of view, while describing the various people and their personal afflictions who wait at the bus stop. However, the only descriptions are metaphors, that explain the emotional state each character is in. The poem itself is a short free verse with four stanzas and only one use of punctuation. Due to this lack of punctuation a stream of consciousness effect is created for the reader. Overall, the tone of the poem is morbid
Stories use narrative to involve the responder in a range of experiences. Storytellers use narrative techniques to establish a setting and shape the characters personality. This is shown in Henry Lawson’s short stories the drover’s wife and the loaded dog as well as Roger hargreaves picture book little miss sunshine.
These short descriptions or stories were to build his persuasion on the reader. The anecdotes he used led
In most novels and stories, the author often writes literature with the literary structure that consists of style and tone suited to the plot. This style and tone enable the author to include archetypal symbols and allusions as well. This is mainly how authors teach us about life-lessons and comparisons with real-life.
Within, ‘Big World' the unnamed narrator has an internal conflict in regards to his failures and of Biggies. The use of emotive language indicates that he thinks carefully on his ‘failures’ and which it leads to him considering to ‘kill himself’. The narrator decides to undertake a fulfilling and enriching getaway because he has always ‘ [Dreamt] of escaping’. The narrator thinks he is “Responsible, like [his] ghost work stopped [Biggie] from learning. In a way [he] ruined his chances” This indicates that he
The next literary device the author utilizes is foreshadowing. The author hints at the reader in numerous ways, which builds curiosity, anticipation, and
Literary devices are very valuable when it comes to making a reader think a certain way, tricking a reader, and keeping the reader on its heels. It leaves them waiting on what is going to happen next! “How I Met My Husband” Surely did a good job of this. They used these in specific times and instances that played along with the theme and tone of the story
For example, when the narrator begins to describe the relationship of Lydia’s parents, Marilyn and James, the next chapter is about how Marilyn met James. Even though the whole story took place within a couple decades, the main event of the book was resolved in just a few short days. This unique style makes the reader feel for the characters when they know their past, and that certain thoughts and images may trigger something within a character, making them act a specific way, when nobody else knows. A good character that shows this trait would be Nath, Lydia’s brother. He knew that Jack, the boy Lydia had been talking to, had something to do with Lydia’s death, “He knows only that Jack is at the heart of everything, and he promises himself he will find out how”.
literary devices such as point of view and symbolism to give it a more dramatic effect and add to the madness the narrator portrays.
Storytelling helps other people to emotionally connect themselves to the author so that they know they are not the only ones who are experiencing a painful or exciting experience, and are able to share the same emotions. It often helps other people to know what they should do in order to get over it when it comes to a painful experience. Maya Angelou’s I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings explores the life of Maya Angelou and the struggles she has been throughout her childhood to her adulthood. Richard Wagemese’s Indian Horse explores the life of Saul Indian Horse and the struggles he has been through after departing from his family. The power of storytelling can unfold questions which ask the audience of how and why are the events are unfold the
