As I think what literacy means to me, the most important thought that comes to mind is my understanding of it: the ability to read and write, I feel that without the ability to read and write, mankind is unable to properly function because there is no foundation for adequate communication. So literacy is reading development, a progression of skills that begins with the ability to understand spoken words and decode written words, and culminates in the deep understanding of text. “Why literature matters” by Dana Gionia is an intreging essay about how a decline in reading will have a negative effect on society. “Literaty readers…(are more likely to) perform charity work, visit a museum, or attend a sporting event” Dana wrote, proving to the readers that nonreaders can have a negative effect on society. Dana is using logic to prove how reading will allow people to have a positive effect on society, compared to nonreaders. In the essay many facts are written about nonreaders, like “in the 2002 study, however, is the declining precentage of Americans, especially young adults, reading literature”. Dana is trying to incourge young adults to read so they can put a positive effect on society, instead of a negative one, like
Reading and writing have played monumental roles in the game called my life. For as long as I can remember, I have been reading or writing, whether it was showcasing my reading skills to my grandparents when I was six, or teaching myself calligraphy when I was thirteen. English literature and all the things it encompasses has always mattered to me, and (almost always) has been a source of my happiness. According to Dana Gioia from “Why Literature Matters, ” more and more young adults are starting to feel the opposite—that reading literature is not interesting and doesn’t matter. “During the past quarter century...the interest young Americans showed in...literature…[has] diminished.” To support this claim that literature matters, Gioia
Since the mid 20th century literature has been a prominent aspect of life in American culture, beginning how to read it in our childhood to benefiting by it throughout adulthood. Throughout the texts of “Heels over Hemingway”, “Why Literature Matters” , and “Good-bad books” all similarly argue the idea that Literature has changed over the years, due to the fact that American has changed as well effecting literature. For this reason Dowd, Orwell, and Gioia assert to their audience the importance of literature, and that it should have a place in society by utilizing rhetorical strategies such as analogy, ethos, pathos, logos, and diction.
Literacy ethos customarily attests to literature as the capability of writing and reading. The two contexts exist independently in human beings since a person retains literacy internally. On a broader perspective, literacy can mean the aptitude of an individual to utilize the use of symbols systems, which prove essential for teaching and learning. By that, it means that the word extends beyond reading and writing to a broader context of developed technology. However, my experiences push me to incline to 'writing ' when defining literacy. The composition course that I undertook has played significant roles in establishing my opinion, which states that the literacy purpose is educating the scholars in a way that offers them an opportunity to interact effectively with the surrounding.
Literature—the dictionary defines it being the art of written works that is designed to entertain, educate and instruct; writers use literature in an attempt to transfer their ideas from paper to the reader; for some, this task means bringing their story to a different place and time that is entirely separate from what the reader could perceive as ordinary, on order to serve the writer’s intent. Liberia is a tropical nation located in Western Africa. A name that means “land of the free,” it is an ironic example of American colonization in Africa.
