This film is a black and white film and the lighting is more towards dim effect which terrified the audience. Music plays the biggest effect in the film. Bernard Hermann’s theme is used for this film because it uses mostly high-pitched string instrument notes so the suspense and horror mood can be formed to the audience.

In the film an atmosphere of suspense is created using various film techniques such as lighting, music and through the plot itself. The film also takes on a Gothic tone using different characteristics and techniques such as the settings, symbolism, emotions such as fear and the different atmospheres in the film. The director explores the theme of good vs evil through different elements and characters in the film generally following normal good vs evil stereotypes with some exceptions.

I picked this film because of the strong message it is meant to put across, considering that Lee wanted the world to acknowledge that while society had experienced significant progress up to the turn of the century, people still had a long way to go in order for the world to be a morally acceptable place. Reading more information about the girls killed during the 1963 Baptist Church bombing really shocked me and made me want to discuss this film.

Over the past few weeks we have watched a few horror movies “Jaws, “The Others”, “Signs” and “Frankenstein” but today we are just focusing on these three movies: “Jaws”, “The Others” and “Signs”. “Frankenstein” was just a flat out boring movie because it was a movie that was black and white and it showed portrayed nothing about how it made the movie suspenseful and scary. “Jaws” was a movie that was made in 1975 which had nothing to scare people of this generation but at least they used appropriate techniques to make the movie suspenseful. “The Others was a movie that was made in 2001 and they did a excellent job of foreshadowing by stating the obvious at the beginning of the movie but the weird part was nobody got what they meant but with this said I don’t think that the movie had used better techniques than “Signs”, in “Signs” I think their techniques standed out the most primarily because of the special effects they used to make the movie jaw-dropping, blood curdling and eye-catching with this said I think the movie “Signs” did the best job in using the proper techniques to create suspense and fear in addition the director of the movie “Signs”, M. Night, Shyamalan, has been nominated for 2 Best Screenplay awards and 1 Best Director award for the movie “Signs” alone.

This is an analysis of the film “Do the Right Thing”. This film begins on a very hot day in Brooklyn, New York. Everyone on the block where the film is taking place is waking up and on their way out the door. Throughout the film there are many conflicts between characters. Mookie is the main character in this film. There are moments where the film from his point of view and the observer will learn the most about his life. Lighting is used very commonly in horror movies. Lighting is the control of the light. Sometimes it starts flashing and sometimes the light all sudden turns bright or dark. lt is a great way to keep you on your toes. Jaws used the best lighting, for example the dim light in the boat made you really think the shark is coming. The lighting was really well used in most part of the movie. In The Others, they only used a few lighting techniques for one example the dim lighting used in the house. Signs had few lighting techniques used too. One was in the basement when the light suddenly goes out. If you have really good lighting used in your movie, the viewer will feel the something is going to jump out. One more is that light helps you hide something that you don't want the viewer to see what' is happening in the back.

One of the ways why cinematography made the film was the lighting. To get the feel, the lighting appeared to be fake shadows that were painted on the set. The fake shadows that were painted on the set gave the lighting appeared to be harsh and sharper to set the mood for the audience. If it weren’t for the painted shadows, the movie wouldn’t have been so successful in the horror genre. Since it was a silent movie, if it weren’t for the shadows, you wouldn’t of seen it as a horror film, but as an original film that was trying to be creative.
