Longer School Day Research Paper

Can you imagine getting up on a Friday morning and not having to get up and go to school. This is becoming more than just a really good dream in some places across the country. This is happening as close as Hot Springs School District in Hot Springs, South Dakota. Many school officials around the country are switching to the system because they believe it is better financially and better for the kids. A four day school week will be better for the children and financially because it saves the school money, student and teacher morale are better, and better test scores.

The four-day school week has gained quite a bit of traction in the United States as of lately. In fact, The Education Commission has estimated that hundreds of districts in 17 states have made the transition. Also, there are state officials present within Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, and Oregon and all have reported increases in the four-day schedule. It is a movement that grows by the month and is the way forward in education. Colby Public Schools absolutely should transition from a five-day school week to a four-day school week due to the benefits of this system. Some students don’t like this idea because they don’t want to change to the four day week. Because they don’t want to change the number of days or hours that we have to come to school. But that's a good thing because students have a lot of time to do stuff and school and outside of school or with sports. The best part about this is the sort week and long weekend to do whatever. Yeah! We might have to come more hours but look we got a long weekend and a pretty sort week of school.

Now you see that a four day school week. Is better than a five day school week. Because there are less children getting in trouble. Kids are getting better grades in school. Schools are saving money by not having to spend money on bus

The debate rages on about whether the school day should be longer or shorter, and if shortening or making the school days longer has a better effect on education. In the article “Small, rural schools going to a four-day week of classes” by Juno Kaufmann states that there are many reasons on why going to a four-day week of classes improve state testing scores and provides a better education. But in the article “Extending the school day” by Ted Franklins there are many reasons why having longer school days help education. Though you might think that having longer classes would help students, going four days a week is better since teachers are better prepared to teach student and ACT scores have gone up in schools that have four day weeks.

We all strive for higher scores in school. A four-day week may provide just that. Students have more time on school days, giving them the opportunity to learn more each and every hour they spend in their classrooms. Even teachers have more time to learn from their peers about their lessons and ways of teaching, so they can improve it to fit their students. A four-day school week may provide higher quality resources, as there are only four days to use them. It saves the school financially in times of low budgets, and that unscheduled day saves at least 1.5% more than schools who stick to the regular five-day week. The mediocre quality of supplies gradually decreases as more weeks spent as a four-day week slowly increase. Students with four-day school weeks had proven themselves they deserved that schedule with their academic scores, which have increased throughout the year. They have better attendance, because they have more time for extracurricular activities and appointments outside of school. A four-day school week may be just what we need.

Homework these days require several grueling hours of pouring out your brain. Almost every night I struggle to finish homework in my classes due to my enrollment in AP and college classes. I usually have essays and several pages of articles and writing to do, which is so strenuous at this age. At the teenage age, our bodies are developing and growing so without sleep due to the homework seizing sleep, our bodies are constantly struggling to keep up. Limiting homework for each class to a maximum of two or three pages would cut down the hours and relieve stress on every

Students would also need to power through longer school days in order to meet instructional hour requirements. If students are less attentive, their performance will drop. If absent, students will miss more material due to the longer school days. Students could forget curriculum over the extra day not in school. Despite these points having some real validity to them, four day school weeks can lessen our environmental impact.

This eventually leads to better standardized testing scores district wide. Merryville High School in Louisiana, “has seen average ACT scores school wide rise from 18.7 to 20 in just four years of having the four day schedule. Honor roll students in middle and high school have also doubled” (Chmelynski). Also, according to the table on page 82 of Yarbrough’s article, test scores on the CTBS improved after moving to the four day school week in both the 3rd and 9th grade levels that were tested (see last page of paper). These improvements do not just happen over a long period of time, school districts have seen immediate improvement in scores. “Webster County School district ranked 115th in Kentucky’s state test scores. The year after moving to a four day week, they improved to 61st” (Weldon 32). Not only are schools seeing improvement in test scores, but they are also seeing overall improvement in all aspects of their district.

According to a report from the New York City district, a school that received funds for longer days fared better on standardized tests. This school had seven percent more students scoring at or above grade level in reading, when two other schools had increases of five and six percent. In math, three percent of students scored at or above grade level in a school with a longer day, compared with one percent for a low performing school and an average of one percent for other schools (Brett 1). This information is one example of many studies that illustrate that long school days have a great positive impact on school performance. The main school goals are improving students’ knowledge and building different skills that will help them in the future. Therefore, if longer school days support these educational goals, people should be concerned about improving schools by lengthening the day.

Because there is one less day in the school week, children have to go to school for more hours and days. There is a law stating that schools need a certain amount of days or hours to go to school. Therefore one day is taken off of the actual school week that means that there would be more hours and days added. When you add time to the school day the younger kids especially will get tired out and won’t want to go to school. Because there are less days in the actual school week, schools with a four day school week will have to add days and hours to the time that they are in school.
