The Rise and Fall of Civilization

Civilization is an organized developing society with rules and a leader. The Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, presents the progress of civilization among a group of little English boys and how it gradually leads to anarchy between them. The boys end up on an uninhabited island and are left stranded by themselves with no adults to watch over them. They boys decide to try and govern themselves until they are rescued. While the boys manage to stay civilized for a while, they begin to turn against each other and become savages.

If there are no adults, they have no reason to fear for any consequences of being caught. When the boys decide to start a signal fire for possible passing ships, they lose control of the fire and "Ralph [realizes] that the boys [are] falling still and silent feeling the beginnings of awe at the power set free below them. The knowledge and awe [makes] him savage" (Golding, 46). The boys know that they will not get in trouble because of the absence of adults which begins the cause of their loss of innocence. The boys then begin to question whether they should continue following Ralph's rules. Jack turns against Ralph and debates whether Ralph should still be chief by saying, "He's not a hunter. He'd never have got us meat. He isn't a prefect and we don’t know anything about him. He just gives orders and expects people to obey for nothing" (Golding, 144). Jack asks for votes against Ralph being chief making Ralph lose a large number of boys from his group. The kids see hunting as a fun activity that is better than following orders slipping away from civilization as they follow Jack. A reason why they all go to Jack is because they want to feel accepted. During the party that Jack holds, the boys all gather around the fire and "they [are] glad to touch the brown backs of the fence that [hems] in terror and [makes] it governable"
