In a state so vast and diverse like California, you are going to encounter people with very eclectic music taste simply because Californians are exposed to a diverse range of music. In a state that has homed the likes of pop, heavy metal, rock, ska, alternative, hip-hop, and gangster rap, it is very easily for someone to feel at home in this state, or as Josh Kun puts it in “Los Angeles is Singing”, “songs can orient us to where we are, ground us in a sense of home...” (LAtitudes, 182). Kun goes onto state “They are locators, but they are also bridges, sparks, and launch pads… songs are handshakes and encounters, dances with strangers…” (LAtitudes, 183). I would agree with Josh Kun because I feel like music accomplishes two things; it makes us reminisce and relate and it also allows us to enter or imagine …show more content…
Vin Scully not only transcribed the game of baseball beautifully but he also had a knack of putting us into the game. As Kevin Bacon put it in his speech “We couldn’t be Kirk (Gibson) and we couldn’t be Sandy (Koufax) but somehow you found a way to put us all in the batter’s box, to put us all on the mound.” It was something about Vin Scully’s selfishness, about his kindness, about the warmth in his voice that he somehow managed to bring a city that covered a vast area, of many languages, of many cultures all together through a game. Kevin Bacon finishes his emotionally speech with the following, “We will miss you, my friend. We will miss you in our radio, in our cars, in our backyard. You’ve been a gift to Los Angeles and to baseball itself. It seems forever that you’ve been guiding us through your personal window into the game… You leave us and the game, Mr. Scully, but not without leaving a lasting impression, and not without taking a piece of our broken baseball heart.” The soundtrack of Los Angeles since 1958 can now ride off onto the sunset knowing he made a lasting impression on millions of Angelinos and generations of Los Angeles Dodgers
Nowhere in the country is he more popular than in Seattle, where he is considered the savior of baseball in the city. In the 1980s, the Mariners were a historically moribund franchise playing in the crumbling Kingdome. Prior to his arrival, the Mariners had been seriously considering a move to Washington DC, but that all changed once Griffey came (Fort, 2000, p. 313). His exciting style of play immediately attracted fans and attention to the franchise (Caple, 2010). In 1995, Griffey led a miracle rally to the Mariners first playoff appearance in decades (Reader, 2010), and capped the season by scoring the game winning run to defeat the New York Yankees in the first round (Schaefer, 2003, p.6). His rise rejuvenated baseball and the city in general, leading the building of the new stadium, Safeco Field, dubbed the “House That Griffey Built”.
Music is another language people use whenever they want to express their feelings. Whether they are angry or passionate, there is always a melody for that emotion. It is universal and it brings people together. There are so many amazing artists that have a substantial influence on this generation and past generations.
After my baseball career came to an end my wife and I had 3 kids while she pursued her career in nursing. On October 24, 1972, nine days after his appearance at the World Series he passes away of a heart attack in his home on North Stamford, Connecticut. My major league career brought an end to approximately 60 years of segregation in professional
“Remember the first time you went to a show and saw your favorite band. You wore their shirt, and sang every word. You didn't know anything about scene politics, haircuts, or what was cool. All you knew was that this music made you feel different from anyone you shared a locker with. Someone finally understood you. This is what music is about.” -Gerard Way. Music has been a part of our daily lives forever. It shows who we are as individuals but also unites us. Our national anthem, The Star Spangled Banner, is a song that connects every single person living in the United States of America. There are so many genres to pick from which allows everyone to be different. Music sort of goes along with Romanticism and the non-conformity part of
Rock ‘n’ roll has made an extreme impact on the American culture for individuals and their growth in society. Plato, a famous philosopher, says, “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything” (“A Quote”). Rock 'n' roll is a form of music that has made many opportunities possible for the American people. This category of music has also opened doors for future generations and America's evolution. Rock ‘n’ roll in American culture has been beneficial in the progression of life styles because it has advanced the relationship between music and technology, created distinct social changes in cultures and adolescents, and formed new inspirational music genres.
It's actually interesting that I am taking another class on the history of rock music so we also talked about psychedelic and acid rock. San Francisco has always been a very progressive city as being the focal point for change before the rest of the nation takes notice and is influenced by it. A lot of people have immigrated to San Francisco because they have viewed it as a land of opportunity as is evidenced by everyone who came to San Francisco during the Gold Rush era. This is especially true for the Chinese people who came to San Francisco for the gold and also worked on the Transcontinental Railroad. San Francisco also has quite a character as is evidenced by the Barbary Coast, Beat Generation, and Summer of Love which created a unique personality for the
Music is a significant component of the American culture. It has the varying ability to reach people in multiple ways such as relaxation, mood boosting, emotional release, unification, and increase in concentration to name a few. Music genres seem to be increasing rapidly over the years and change around remarkably in their popularity. Four genres that come to mind for high popularity are rock, hip hop/ rap, pop, and country.
Popular and counter culture music, fashion, and literature produced in California between 1940 and 2005 has reflected large patterns and transformations in California history that continue to reverberate today in the state and in a lesser way within the larger national and even world population. California’s popular and counter-cultural literary, musical, and cinematic icons of the time reflected both the Golden State’s long and troubled tango with racism as well as its ultimate movement to a more pluralistic society.
Music, “…one of the most widely used and appealing forms of communication…”, is universal and used for different purposes (Root, 2005, p. 7). Among the uses are “…play or entertainment, which humans of all ages engage in to stimulate feelings of joy, tension, and interaction, and enrich their experiences by adding mental complexity, counteracting boredom and lethargy” (Root, 2005, p. 7). In addition, music expresses “…emotions such as love, sentiment, or anger” (Root, 2005, p. 7). Ultimately, it communicates values showing the reality of society and culture. Anyone listening to “a few records [helps] enrich [their] feelings, extend [their] sense of love or despair, and feed [their] fantasies or fire some real relationship” (Cooper & Haverkos,

By the 1920s Los Angeles was booming in Latin music with recording and live performances by Latino artists from the Southwest, New York and the Caribbean. The styles of music that they had in LA we're Banda rap, Chicano Rock, Corrido, Latin jazz, Latin Rock. The vigorous R&B, rock and roll, punk and hip-hop scenes of L.A.’s Chicano Eastside have helped shape American popular music, even as the constant infusion of immigrant laborers from Mexico and Central America continue to provide new musical ideas and identities. Almost half of Los Angeles County’s 9 million residents are
Music is my life when I was little my dad introduced me to all types of music. We listen to hip-hop, reggae, old school, country, and jazz. We believe that as long as it has a good beat and a message that what makes that a great song.Being that my dad is from New Jersey I have this Northern flavor to my lifestyle. It is truly present in my taste in music. Many people say that I'm a little weird when they listen to the type of music I listen too.
According to the Migration Policy Institute, “In 2013 approximately 41.3 million immigrants lived in the United States, an all time high for the nation.” Many immigrants come to the United States in search for higher paying jobs, nicer homes, and the rights that every American receives. Opportunities flourish in America. In other countries, women usually do not have rights, for example: Afghanistan. Afghanistan is said to be one of the worst countries for a woman to live in. Immigrants see America as a land of opportunity, while citizens overlook the rights they are given. Living in such a wonderful place, America doesn't always get the appreciation it deserves.
Music in America has been on the decline since the turn of the millennium. Recent popular musical genres such as rap and hip-hop have promoted sex, violence, profanity, and drug abuse. Artists such as Drake, David Guetta, and Nicki Minaj have missed the mark when it comes to good music. Music is supposed to make people feel something, to take people on a journey. In this sense, music draws a certain parallel to the trajectory of America. When times were good in America, music seemed to be good. Recently, bad music has influenced the mentality of American youth and made them unstable and insecure. Music that has a positive, uplifting message has the power to help.
The popular culture of music has changed dramatically over the course of sixty five years. Since this time, new genres of music have been introduced, existing genres have changed, and fixed stereotypes have been associated with certain genres of music. Music has become a major part of popular culture, and is portrayed almost everywhere in first world societies, including on television, radio, at shopping centers, sporting events and in every area of popular culture. Music has become a major part of popular culture, and continues to strive and develop into more and diverse areas of culture.
