The Importance of Los Angeles’ Status as a Sanctuary City Sanctuary cities are considered to be havens for undocumented immigrants who have entered the United States for economic opportunities, to escape violence, or other various reasons. One of the first sanctuary cities in the country was Los Angeles, which along with the rest of Los Angeles County is home to roughly 814,000 undocumented immigrants as of 2013 (PPIC). Many of these undocumented immigrants have never committed a criminal act outside of the civil offence of entering the country without the proper immigration documents. While there may be flaws to sanctuary cities, Los Angeles’ status as a sanctuary city is vital to the protection of not only the undocumented immigrants living there but the rest of the community as well. Even though there are some problems that come with sanctuary cities, they are a necessary institution as a protection for undocumented immigrants in the United States. Entering the United States undocumented is a federal misdemeanor. However, simply lacking the necessary immigration …show more content…
Gates’ adoption of Special Order #40, Los Angeles became the first sanctuary city in 1979. The text of Special Order #40 states that LAPD officer should not question anyone only about their status as a citizen, nor arrest anyone solely for being an undocumented immigrant (“Understanding Special Order #40”). It also dictates that the order helps the LAPD protect everyone in its jurisdiction, as the United States Constitution says it should. Just because someone isn’t a legal citizen, they are still a resident in the country and should therefore be offered the same basic protections, which is a fundamental human right that should be given to everyone regardless. Former Chief Gates has later explained that not only does it help protect everyone in Los Angeles, but the order strives to help give everyone in Los Angeles the same respect and courtesy by the police (“40 on
Last week the City of Ithaca passed an ordinance to make the city a Sanctuary City. Local Congressman Tom Reed says sanctuary cities are not the right approach. "We should be focusing on the root cause of the problem, it's a border that's not functioning, that needs to be enforced to keep our American citizens safe so she has a safe environment upon which to thrive and achieve the American dream. So I think if we can adopt that common ground, if we can adopt that vision we can unite and solve the problem that is the root cause of this and thats
Illegal immigrants have been a hot topic lately due to the popularity of this topic amongst the Republican Presidential Nominees, especially Donald Trump. These illegal immigrants bring various things to this country when they come. Some things are positive, such as a family simply seeking to find a better life, while some things are harmful to the United States, such as the amount of crime among illegal immigrants. In July 2015, the most recent estimate of illegal immigrants was 11.2 million. This same data shoes that 56 percent of all deportations last year were convicted criminals, which accounted for 177,960 individuals (Shoichet, 2015). Crime among illegal immigrants is a problem, and sanctuary cities, which are supposed to be a solution, may be making this problem worse.
As Donald Trump’s presidency unfolds his promise to crack down on immigration and cut funding to sanctuary cities is becoming a reality, however, each city is handling it differently. Throughout his campaign, Donald Trump promised to crack down on illegal immigrants and “sanctuary cities”. Sanctuary city is a vague term that is being thrown around right now. It loosely refers to a towns or cities that don’t immediately turn over illegals who commit small crimes, and don’t cooperate fully with immigration services (“Sanctuary Cities: Top 3 Pros and Cons”). Most Texas cities have vowed to remain loyal to their citizens, and not rip families apart due to politics and money. Cutting federal funding to a city is not an
It also subjects law enforcement to a class A misdemeanor for failing to “hold non-citizen inmates subject to removal” (Aguilar). This creates various responses from police officers whom come from an undocumented family and do not personally agree with this. Sheriff Sally Hernandez from Travis county in Texas decided to take a stand against this new ban against sanctuary cities. Sheriff Sally decided that her county will not comply with this infringement on families and their safety (Aguilar). This caused the state to “deprive the local government of all of its state funding,” showing that this is going to be a long battle between the state and local government of Texas and Travis County. The state is disciplining the local government of Travis County by withholding all state funding which is quite detrimental to the county itself (Aguilar). State government definitely uses their money as a source of power over local government. This seems very over-the-top but it is what the state finds necessary to uphold order and
First of all, the U.S Constitution protects these sanctuary cities. Since federal government and state government. If the city in the state decides to become a sanctuary city, there should be nothing in the way of them. The federal government shouldn’t intervene into something that they shouldn’t be in. Good relationships with local law enforcement and the people of the city documented or not, is essential in order for prosperous growth. When the people of the city and the law enforcement can help each other and communicate without fear of being deported or stripped from their family, then that city should be an example for all others. Protecting these undocumented immigrants from unjust Federal Immigration Laws should be one of the main goals. The government is taking the hard working people that have been here their entire lives. Trump’s idea of sanctuary cities is a bit blurry due to the fact that he only looks at crimes. Trump does not look at all the important things that undocumented people and families do like work the jobs that no one else wants to do. They do it efficiently as well, it’s not like if they do a bad job. Undocumented immigrants are actually working the fields putting all the food that other people use on their plates. As a matter of fact, now that Mr. Trump wants to build “a giant beautiful wall”, most of the people that will be actually building will
The history of the “sanctuary city” designation is vague in its origin and definition, the word sanctuary meant something to those refugees, and to a lot of congregations all over the country who provided them with shelter. As for today, the term has become charged and in some ways toxic. With hundreds of cities considered sanctuary jurisdictions, five states and 644 counties have policies limiting local law enforcement’s cooperation with federal
The new president has signed a lot of orders. There is one major topic that he talks about which is sanctuary cities and their fundings. In this essay, I’m going to talk about how Donald Trump is taking away funds from the sanctuary cities. This is happening because of the help they are giving to immigrants. The second thing is how these decision affects many immigrants and their families. I know that there’s a lot of people who disagree with these cities. I am in favor, because there are many immigrants that come to the United states in seek of a better life. To live the “American dream.” These immigrants are not here to harm America in any way.
A Sanctuary city is a city that does not permit municipal funds or resources to be applied in furtherance of enforcement of federal immigration. However, Sanctuary cities are not and should not be a practice within the United States. The problem is that Sanctuary cities defy federal law, endangers the citizens of that city and propose taxes that do not benefit the people who pay them.
I think these cities are hazardous to protect legal citizens. For example, in San Francisco (a sanctuary city), a
Can sanctuary cities be effective in both the policing and protection of undocumented citizens and if so, how will they regulate the population in question? A main issue being displayed here is a lack of standardized regulations being set by sanctuary cities. Instead of setting a precedent of resisting government immigration policies, these efforts would better have spent towards setting up and promoting programs that assist illegal immigrants in becoming American citizens. This paper will look at articles regarding sanctuary cities from Slate, Vox and the Wall Street Journal and decide which has the strongest argument.
A sanctuary city is a city where that specific city limits there laws to enforce immigration laws. Sanctuary cities are located all across the country. The area where there is the most of are the coast and are located near some major airports. There are many pros and cons to these things. President Donald Trump is very against these. On his 5th day in office he tried to support immigration enforcement. He has even signed an executive order denying any funding toward sanctuary cities. It's a very confusing topic. Since there really is no law many immigrants who live there can get away with anything. About 80% of the United States citizens oppose these cities because of taxes, crime, and many more things.
A San Francisco woman named Kate Steinle was murdered on July 1, 2015 by an illegal immigrant. He had been deported five times and previously convicted of seven other felonies. The story of Kate’s death made headline news all across America highlighting the need for Congress to reform laws that allow illegal immigrants in Sanctuary cities to remain in the United States after being deported. A Sanctuary city is a term given to a city in the United States that follows certain practices that protect illegal immigration. The undocumented immigrant from Mexico arrested for the death of Kathryn Steinle’s was Juan Francisco Lopez Sanchez, who had no motive for this senseless killing. Kate’s father told the media his daughter was fatally shot while
Asylum urban areas become possibly the most important factor when an undocumented outsider comes into contact with the police. An extremely normal event of this occurs out and about – somebody is speeding, has a broken taillight, or has a broken tag light, and is pulled over. In the event that a man is undocumented, odds are they don't have a legitimate driver's permit – just twelve states and the District of Columbia enable foreigners to lawfully drive. Settlers still need to get the opportunity to work and school some way or another – however being found without a legitimate driver's permit can get an individual captured. Different reasons settlers (simply like local conceived Americans) come into contact with the police incorporate a migrant
California is a liberal state and San Francisco is a sanctuary city. This may have partially influenced the results. The data is based on a survey with 62 responses from both 11th and 12th graders at American High School. Results showed that while about 65% of respondents said that they do not support illegal immigration, 73% of respondents supported sanctuary cities. The idea of the liberals is that sanctuary cities help maintain trust between law enforcement and immigrants and weed out the more important, more harmful criminals. A city that instead is willing to deport illegal immigrants is likely to not have cooperation between civilians and law enforcement making it harder for law enforcement to do their job. California follows this liberal
This is probably because there many people from different cultures and ethnicities living in Los Angeles, but every person has different living conditions. For example, in Boyle Heights there are nearly 40 different gangs and keeping Latino youth in school is a huge problem due the influence and peer pressure from the gangs (Edens). Drop out rates of school are high and therefore it becomes harder to change the city. Although, there are groups like Girls Today, Women Tomorrow, a group of women in Boyle Heights who are trying to continue with their education and help out their community
