Though many Americans are in the diet and weight-loss craze, the population as a whole is still considered overweight (Lemonick). This may be due to many factors, such as lack of nutrition in food and having a slothful lifestyle. Also, as people pursue other interests, such as careers and family life, they ignore keeping themselves healthy and fit. To maintain health and life span, one must exercise, eat moderately, and eat foods that have nutritional value. If one follows this plan, one can successfully lose weight and be healthy.

How, however, to fill ourselves up, we eat huge portions, large side entrées, and a gargantuan carbonated drink. If one walks into some fast food restaurants, one can get their meal enlarged or “Super sized”. We must go back to our old ways of limiting our food intake. One should eat until there are full, not comatose. We must not eat too much, but we should eat just enough to maintain our body’s need for energy. Overeating has bigger ramifications than most people think. However, Americans became aware of this “overeating epidemic” when they “flocked to see Super Size Me, Morgan Spurlock’s documentary about what happens when you eat nothing but McDonald’s food for a month. Now McDonald’s is discontinuing its Super Size option” (Lemonick).
Eating nutritional foods is necessary in order to successfully lose weight. A misconception people have is that they think it is okay to eat a whole box of chocolate chip cookies after enjoying a 5K run in the afternoon. This can be one of the worst things a person can do to his body. Although one exercises everyday of his life, one also has to eat healthy. Eating healthy requires smart thinking and will power. Portion sizes have increased rapidly over the years and created health problems for many people. Just a few of decades ago, food was given in smaller portions, and now people’s idea of the right amount of food has become distorted. People today, have a distorted idea of how big their omelet or coffee should be in the morning, leading to an increase of overweight and obese people. With more calories consumed, and less physical activity, many more people have serious health and weight problems.
An analysis of the film Super Size Me, which is a 2004 documentary over Morgan Spurlock who documents the obesity problem we have in this country and how McDonald’s and other fast food chains are the ones that mainly contribute to the increasing problem, and exploring the realist aesthetics of the film goes over the elements of direct address to the camera, handheld camera, on-camera interview and also real people (non actors). This documentary was made to study the influence that the fast food industry, such as McDonald’s, Wendy’s, KFC and others have over the obesity problem in America. Morgan Spurlock makes himself a guinea pig and explores the consequences to his body when only eating McDonald’s three times a day for one whole month and he can only super size it if the cashier asks him. Spurlock consults with a practitioner, cardiologist, gastroenterologist, nutritionist, and trainers to help and track the change in his body during the whole experiment.
Contrary to the popular belief of the time, Morgan Spurlock’s amateur documentary “Supersize Me” pushed reform in both fast food culture, and eating habits of citizens, being one of the first catalysts in a new movement in America. This 2004 film, being the first of his works to establish Spurlock as a filmmaker, focuses on Spurlock’s 30 day journey in which he vowed to eat solely McDonalds for three meals a day, and track his overall mental, physical, and social changes over this span of time. In his documentary Super Size Me he embarks on a quest to not only describe and use himself as an example of the growing obesity trend, but to offer the viewers with base-line nutritional knowledge that will allow them to draw their own informed conclusions. Spurlock's primary intention is to prove through self-experimentation that eating solely McDonald's food is dangerous. His secondary intention is to denounce the rising obesity rate in American by using statistics, his own research, and the opinions of experts. Obesity within adults is a prevalent problem in the United States, with over 51% of all adults suffering from obesity by the year 2030 (Joyner et al. 217). Obesity, or the state of being excessively overweight, is sometimes a result from what is known as food addiction. Much like an addiction to a substance, to be addicted to food is to constantly crave a certain food item (Joyner et al. 217). Obesity and food addiction tend to coincide with each other. That coexistence is shown primarily in the documentary Super Size Me, in which director Morgan Spurlock focuses on the way fast food and food addiction affect the human body.

Americans are spending about $4.6 billion a year on potato chips, and 23.5 billion a year on candy and gum. 46 Percent of adult Americans eat out on a typical day, and one third of them choose fast food. That is because the fast food industry has slowly become one of the symbols of American culture and is spreading to other cultures as well: McDonalds has 26,000 locations in 119 countries, Pizza Hut has more than 10,000 in 86 countries, and Subway has 14,500 in 75 countries. Commercials, signs, and huge advertisements are pushing junk food at us every day; people cannot even go to the grocery store without candy bars being lined up right by the checkout. The junk food industry realizes how appealing it can be. When a person is in a rush, they can easily eat a large meal without having to make a lot of decisions, work, dress up, or get out of their car. The speed and convenience fit Americans’ pressured lifestyles. It does not fit, however, to our health and wellness. In order to publicize the obesity epidemic, filmmaker Morgan Spurlock embarks on a thirty day experiment documented in his film, Super Size Me. Morgan Spurlock, a filmmaker, created a documentary film called Supersize Me which accentuates the message of what dangers of fast food and consequently their effects on our health. This belief was inspired from a lawsuit case of two girls who, at the time were suing McDonalds for their health issues, such as obesity. However, the girls lost to the lawsuit, the judge ruled that was no evidence of their sufficient health obesity was the cause of eating from McDonalds. Due to this lawsuit, he conducted an experiment only to eat McDonalds for a maximum of 30 days and investigate the impact of fast food on his health. Obesity has become increasingly more prominent in American society. The Unites States has even been termed an overweight nation. Some twenty to thirty percent of American adults are now considered obese (Hwang 1999 and Hirsch et al 1997). With this in mind, Americans constantly look around themselves determining their weight status as well as that of those around them. While some Americans do fit the healthy category, others enter the underweight, overweight, and even obese categories, all of which can be unhealthy.

This discrepancy between Americans’ weight-loss desires and behaviors has existed for years”(Brown). According to society, the definition of a healthy person is someone who exercises often and eats healthy foods. Even though people want to be healthy, becoming healthy is a hard task. Surely it is much easier to lay around at home and eat chips than to work out at the gym. Maybe this is why obesity rates are on the rise. It is no secret that in today’s world most people are unhappy with their physical appearance. Women, particularly, struggle with their perception of overweight, unproportioned bodies. Meanwhile, icons such as Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, Eva Longoria, and Kim Kardashian flaunt bodies of perfection that every woman dreams of having. Women become obsessed and determined to put themselves through tough weight loss regime to achieve the hot, sexy, beach body look of these celebrities. That is not necessarily a negative because weight loss provides empowering and rewarding outcomes for people’s lives, but there are several different options that people have when it comes to losing weight. For example, liposuction or eating healthy and exercising. It should be no surprise that liposuction is becoming more and more of an acceptable way to lose the extra pounds, but it’s not the best alternative to diet and exercise. When debating on either getting costly liposuction or committing to a rigorous healthy eating and exercise routine, it becomes evident that healthy eating and exercise boast far more benefits; those desiring a Jennifer Lopez beach body should stick to dieting and exercise and should avoid going under the knife to obtain the best overall results.
Unfortunately, for most people gaining weight is much easier than losing weight. It is not uncommon for a person to start developing poor eating habits, and then they let their weight gain go too far and get out of control.
Through the years, society have got a whole new concept of what being happy could mean; it is not about how you feel, it is more about what others would think about you. People find themselves wanting to be somebody else as long as they look “good”, but what is the meaning of “good”? The real meaning is translated into skinny, the skinnier they are, the happier they will be, so it’s more about “the look”. One topic that has been talked about for many years within Kinesiology is the debate on whether exercise or diet is more important for losing weight and maintaining weight loss. While both or important for a person's individual health, a person's diet is essentially the foundation for a healthy lifestyle and an important factor in losing weight and gaining nutrients that can help the body develop. Many studies and experiments have shown that a healthy diet goes a long way in helping people lose more weight, but more importantly teaches them how to continue to treat their bodies in a healthy manner. Dieting has been shown to have a bigger impact on weight loss than exercise has. For this reason, it can be said that a good diet is more effective for weight loss as compared to exercise alone.
