Abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. The United States Supreme Court legalized abortion in 1973: currently there are about 1.2 million abortions that are being performed each year in the United States (Trupin). Around the world there are 20 to 30 million legal abortions that are being performed and 10 to 20 million illegal abortions that are performed. Trupin states, “Abortion is one of the most visible, controversial, and legally active areas in the field of medicine.” Back when abortion was illegal there were many deaths that occurred due to illegal abortions. Women who have had abortions are 81 percent more likely to experience subsequent mental health problems (“Abortion Risk: A list of major psychological complications related to abortion”). Most of them wished that they have changed their minds before the procedure started and most of them didn’t even want to go through it but were forced to. From the article “Abortion Risk: A list of major psychological complications related to abortion,” it states that women who had abortions were 160 percent more likely than delivering women to be hospitalized for psychiatric treatment in the first 90 days following abortion or delivery. After they are hospitalized they find out that they have so many disorders that they got because they had an abortion. After eight weeks of their abortion, researchers found that 44 percent complained of nervous disorders, 36 percent had experienced sleep disturbances, 31 percent had regrets about their decision, and 11 percent had been prescribed psychotropic medicine by their doctor (“Abortion Risk: A list of major psychological complications related to abortion”). Women who had abortions had a 59 percent increased risk for suicidal thoughts, 61 percent increased risk for mood disorders, 61 percent increased risk for social anxiety disorders, 261 percent increased risk for alcohol abuse and 280 percent increased risk …show more content…

But a woman from Scotland had to problem telling her story. She said that when she got pregnant from her boyfriend she was happy but when she told him, he made her get an abortion. Since her country didn’t allow the practice of abortion, she had to go to another country to do it. In the last minute she regretted her choice and wanted to back out but it was too late. Once it was over and she was back home, she had an emotional breakdown. Her emotional pain was really bad and every time something reminded her of her pregnancy she would go into depression. She said, “I am still with my boyfriend, but I won’t ever forgive him for forcing me to have this abortion. It’s my biggest regret, and I won’t ever forget it. If there’s anything I could do to stop abortions from happening, I’d be doing it in a heartbeat” (“Abortion Story”). Another woman had a similar story but she was forced to do it by her family. Since they found out that she was pregnant they kept telling her that she couldn’t have a baby. They made her go to another state and do the abortion but since she was underage she couldn’t say that she wanted the baby (“Abortion Story”). There are so many women that had the same story but most of them would never speak of
