Mao Zedong, also known as Chairman Mao, was a Chinese communist who is today depicted as the ‘father of modern China’ by the Communist Party. Having modernised and industrialised the whole of China, he is hailed a hero by much of the Chinese population. In his time, Mao placed many strict regimes, from ones that affected the whole of China, to ones that affected single households. During his time, China underwent a series of social changes. He provided equality amongst his people – all types of classes were treated equally; gender equality was introduced and a strong communist education system was also implemented. It is estimated that between 1950 and 1952, 47 million hectares of land were distributed amongst 300 million peasants. This period in China was known as the Cultural Revolution. This was a very clever tactic used by Mao for the communist party to gain support from the peasants and it can be said that the Chinese Communist Party cleverly involved peasants in order for the Communist rebellion to be saluted upon. With so many rich landowners and Bourgeoisie being killed and humiliated, many were browbeaten into giving up and the rich landowners ceased to exist in China. After Mao’s death in 1976, his importance can be seen to have been completely exaggerated by the people. When Deng Xiaoping came into power, he famously said, ‘It does not matter whether a cat is black or white, so long as it catches mice’. During Mao’s time, it would have been deemed as an illusory disrespect towards strict socialist planning. Deng took control of the Chinese communist party and in 1978, the four modernisations were announced. This was a policy designed to make China a great economic power. During Deng’s time in power, many changes were made. The re-emergence of a social elite and an evolution of ‘bar life’’ were brought out.
