Introduction Mass media is communication via written, broadcast, or spoken means that reaches a large audience. This includes television, radio, advertising, movies, the Internet, newspapers, magazines, books, and so forth. Mass media is a significant force in modern culture, particularly in America. The media is always channeling messages to the public to promote not only products, but moods, attitudes, and a sense of what is and is not important. The media can shape or reinforce cultural values. An examination and discussion of three examples of media and their impact follows.
Cultural Values of an Individual
Breaking Bad is a television series about Walter White who is a struggling high school chemistry teacher diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. His former student, Jesse Pinkman, partners with White, as he turns to a life of crime by producing and selling crystallized methamphetamine (meth) in order to secure his family's financial future before he dies. White encounters many dangers of the criminal world in the process. The show was extremely popular and subject of much critical acclaim.
