In the two essays “How the Media Helped Win World War II” and “In Defense of the Media,” both authors argue that the media is helpful in times of conflict. The influence of the media helped in times of conflict. In both passages, the positive part of the media was emphasized deeply. In the world today, media is just like banking career. They both want to make money. In “How the Media Helped Win World War II,” the author argues with plenty of evidence that the United States would not have won the war if it were not for public support. The public did not need any reason than that to support the war effort. Also, the public had fathers, brothers, sons, and friends who were directly involved and wanted to support them despite media propaganda.

In his book The Best War Ever: America and World War II, Michael Adams tries to dissolve the many misconceptions of World War II. As the title of the book implies, The United States left the war with a great optimistic view of the these “glorious” five years. The United States as a population had been tricked into believing in the, at times, fabricated conditions of its history that had been presented to people as some beautiful stories and myths where nations are viewed as being first-rate in union and morality. These so-called myths were created out of several factors. Because of Hollywood, the vast amounts of government propaganda, and far-reaching economic prosperity, Americans were, for the most part, hidden from the real truth of The Second World War. In this period of time, even, the generation of the Second World War is seen as being top-notch in morality and unity. There was a popular misconception held that there were no problems in terms of ethnicity or gender; it seemed that families were living contented lives and children excelled in school and read all kinds of books (115).
Robert Elegant’s quote explains the significant role the media played in the Vietnam War. This essay will argue that the media’s effect was one dominant aspect of why the United States lost the war in Vietnam. Looking in detail at the heavily televised ‘Tet Offensive’, this essay will suggest that this series of battles was the beginning of the decisive part the media played in influencing public opinion. It is worth nothing that there are several factors involved in why the United States lost the Vietnam War, but this essay will focus on just one. Overall, it
Following the United States’ entry into World War II and with national governments battling for the hearts and minds of the people, propaganda became an industry of war just as “important as producing bullets and planes.” In the words of Archibald MacLeish, assistant director of the Office of War Information and librarian of Congress, “The principal battleground of the war is not the South Pacific. It is not the Middle East. It is not England, or Norway, or the Russian Steppes. It is American opinion.” Thus, propaganda was the most effective resource in securing the American victory in World War II, as it caused an increase in
During WWII, media was a huge part in trying to rally up the people to help in war efforts. . Great Britain was in major need and were willing to do anything.
During the early 1900s a new era of warfare emerged as governments began to employ all economic, technological and psychological resources available to defeat their enemies. World War II was a time of great urgency and sacrifice that called upon unity for not just soldiers, but also everyday citizens. America needed a way to get this message across quickly and effectively and so they did it in the forms of posters and speeches. The World War II propaganda that was created to unite and encourage patriotism across the United States played a pivotal and vital role in the United Nation’s victory.
The media is an amazing invention that can be a very good tool during times of distress. There are issues with media sometimes but overall, it can be useful in the right hands. Throughout history, the media has been used wisely to enrich the knowledge of the public and to show what can be done in order to help their fellow man.
This essay will exam how mass media in America saw one of its greatest collapses between the events of 9/11 and the lead up to the Iraq war.(Kamiya). The essay will use Herman and Chomsky's Propaganda model and its five filters and the Frankfurt school's concept of 'culture industry' to illustrate where the media went wrong. Habermas' public sphere model will be used to discuss what the media should have done. Media became a form of propaganda that enforced ignorance and lacked a balance between pro-war patriotism and necessary critiques. The mass media sacrificed its role as the fourth pillar of democracy through supporting the Bush administration and dismissing facts and the interests of the public.
A good starting point when trying to find the connections between soldiers from different nations is discovering and understanding why these soldiers enlisted to fight in the war along with understanding how the media’s filtering effects that. In the case of Paul Bäumer and his friends, they had a school teacher called Kantorek who, “during drill-time Kantorek gave us long lecture until the whole of [Paul’s] class went, under [Kantorek’s] shepherding, to the District Commandant and volunteered,” (Remarque 11). Paul even suggested those who didn’t volunteer risked being called “coward” because “at that time even one’s parents were ready with the word,” (Remarque 11). As Paul put it- “no one had the vaguest idea what we were in for” (Remarque 11), which could have been because of the filtering of the media on the war.
I did this to further understand the role of media in the world, as I hope this essay proves to do as well. The duty of portraying correct information, specifically as the client or assignment desires. The consistent utilization of multiple sources and ideas in order to consequently be “true”. As a student and proprietor of personal experience and expertise, I will strive to remain independent and balanced in my opinion. This is superlatively important in a structured debate such as this one. In media and more locally in my class, the promotion and recognition of creativity and freedom of expression is/was an inhibitor and restrictor of content. The relation of the obligation of the media to fulfill the thirst for knowledge inherent in us all is something very complex and necessary to explain. Moreover, it is at the time of this argument, very evocative to think about this in the examples utilized in this essay. This is essentially the argument of the media, supplemented by renowned filmmakers and politicians such as Susan Sontag and others, on the power of
Media in today 's reality plays an imperative and vital part in getting down to business the conclusion of overall population over different matter of political and social criticalness. Ideas like trial by media and so forth are occurring which are an immediate consequence of activism of media and the dynamic effect that media plays on the mentalities of overall population.
According, to my interpretations of the documentary 'War Made Easy’, the news media plays the social role to inform to the people, but moreover is a business that needs high rating to sell and be profitable, which makes necessary to cover what is a subject of interest to the people, many times no weighting or making an objective analysis of the situation, and war is not the exception.
In times of War, the media plays a crucial role both in reporting, monitoring and giving updates. During the Vietnam War of 1955-1975, the American press played crucial roles of reporting until it ended up shifting its tone under the influence of occurrence of some events like the Tet Offensive, the My Lai Massacre, the bombing of Cambodia and leaking of Pentagon papers resulting into lack of trust in the press (Knightly 1975). From the beginning of the war up to present times there have been undying debates over the role of media in the war. The have been various criticisms over the American News Media’s actions and influences on the outcome of the war. The debate is embedded on the particular political assumptions perceived across the
“A lie told once remains a lie but a lie told a thousand times becomes the truth” – Joseph Goebbels, German Reich Minister of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda. This is the exact words of Nazis most famous propagandist in using media as a mass weapon of propaganda and mind control. Could you imagine Germany in 1930s, without Television channel, without the Internet, without every mobile device in your palm, what channel of information will you get? Of course, newspapers, flies, images, celebrities were used as tools for propaganda purposes, designed to provoke a reaction, and ultimately, a form of control over their citizen. Nowadays, with all the advanced of technologies, information can reach everyone in every corner of the Earth, the message is delivered in the subtlest ways, without people’s conscious, has shaped everyone’s decision, or at least shape their behavior toward the decision that the orchestrator want the audience to perceive. With the booming of internet, information sharing seamlessly, we must ask ourselves, the role of media in conveying, shaping the society that we are living in. Let look at few examples of U.S propaganda machine, and later, the particular case of fish sauce in Viet Nam back in October 2016.
