Video 1: Keynote Address at the 2015 Reformation Project Conference https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbtSdgOC5pI The opening keynote address at the 2015 Reformation Project Conference was given by Nicole Garcia, a transgender Latina Lutheran pastor who is also a nationally certified counselor specializing in gender identity. In her talk she shared some of her background, including her position as a former law enforcement officer, her decision to quit law enforcement and pursue counseling, and her journey to the ELCA seminary to become ordained in the Lutheran church. In order to bring attention to the violence displayed towards transgender people, calling the audience to compassion, she presented throughout her address photographs of 23 transgender people who had been killed that year, explaining that one of those pictures was taken by a surveillance camera of a 66 year old newly uncloseted transgender woman only moments before she was killed. Garcia posited that this picture was likely the only picture of this transgender woman being her true self.
Instead of presenting a defense of her position based on the verses commonly used to argue against transgender issues, Garcia opts to have her best defense be a good offense. She prefaced this offence, however, with a short history lesson on the reformation, because, in her own words, “I want to remind you that the way we approach Scripture is very, very complicated. Greater minds than mine have been trying to discern the meaning
I have chosen the movie Signs to do my worldview analysis on. First, I will discuss the worldviews that the main characters in the movie have. I will then answer the question of if the characters were true to their worldviews. I will also discuss the obstacles that the main characters faced that deterred the character or characters from living out their worldview. Lastly, I will describe mental, emotional, or spiritual reactions I had to the movie as well as explain if I agree or disagree with the worldview present in the movie.
However, the latest development is the embarrassment at having to explain to people that equality cannot be cast aside for the so-called greater good. Separate laws and regulations are being considered, some by the well-meaning, and some by administrators and legislators who can’t quite figure out what the word equality really means. They are afraid or just don’t know. As a result, unwanted attention has caused some of us to grow alligator skin. Some no longer care to blend in. Others push normal barriers and do their best not to blend in. It would do us all a world of good to ignore anybody who uses shock as a teaching tool, transgendering or not. Go back to the word equality. Embrace it. Stacey and Arlen, too, may be forced to become activists because of a rising tide of subversive ridicule on both sides of the
While negotiating the brief I had to deliberate on the intended audience, the purpose and the genre markers inherent in my trailer. The trailer will be set in a haunted asylum, three film students will investigate the mental hospital to dismiss the rumours in a documentary format, it of course turns out the rumours are true and the trio need to try and escape the asylum with their lifes still intact. I chose the unisex young adult market for my trailer, persons aged 15 to 25. I also had to decide on what genre markers would be present in my trailer. The trailer is of course an advertisement and it's main purpose is to get the viewers to go and see the full release of the film in cinemas.
People in the lower class are often portrayed as pitiful, unworthy, lazy people who aren’t good for anything. That is according to what the media shows us daily. Blue collar work is viewed as “real” work (Linkon). The lower, working class takes pride in what they do because they accomplish something that takes effort and skill. The working class requires effort and strength. There are good lower class citizens who work for the benefit of their communities. The working class is unfortunately being brought down by the more “fortunate” higher-middle class and rich people. Basically, there is a bias in the representations of society (Ginsburgh). In a Levi’s - Go Work commercial, the lower class are positively portrayed as hard
Building her credibility throughout, she maintains a front as a God-Loving Chrision and mother. But her outrage and highly opinionated argument is disreputed when she mistakes the expression of feminine traits by a male character as transgenderism. Her integration of specific facts displays her
The focus of the article is transgendered Mexican sex workers who travel back and forth between Guadalajara, Mexico and San Francisco, and how they have adapted elements from the marginalized saints such as Santisima Muerte, St. Jude, and the Virgin of Guadalupe from the Catholic faith for protection from the homophobia, discrimination, and danger they faced in their daily lives.
Throughout time, many recognize that the Catholic Church frowns upon homosexuals, however, they frown upon transsexuals to an even greater extent, as they see it as an even larger perversion to the already sinful homosexual lifestyle. In my essay, I will argue that many transsexuals feel as though they do not receive the respect they would like to have in society, and search for the individuals that will not judge them for who they are. By this, it is seen that the La Santa Muerte helps fill the void left by society in many transsexuals living across North America. With a lot of people in society discriminating what they do not understand or cannot explain, this makes transsexuals the perfect target for society, with the addition of the Church. Since people cannot explain why there are transsexuals and they do not know about the troubles of how hard it is to be part of this minority, they do not feel that transsexuals fit into the ‘social norm’, as “transsexuality seems to involve the most profound ‘error’ within the order of sexual dichotomy” (Castro, 1993). It can be seen that even in today’s North American society, transsexuals are still not completely understood and accepted as a valid member of society. This is most likely because many people have different variations of what gender identity means to them. For the most part, gender identities are the “theories of ourselves that reflect feminine or masculine characteristics as judged within a given cultural
The purpose of this paper and the research therein is to explore the concepts of discrimination towards a particular group of individuals-transgender individuals. The reasoning associated with this is due to the increasing rates of discrimination and the multiple facets thereof associated with this particular group of people. The articles being used (five in total) provide an introspective point considering the negative impact associated with discrimination against transgender individuals and the resulting effects towards not only themselves, but also their relationships, their mental health; and their
Do you believe everything the media tells you? The media can sometimes depict events as spurious or perspicuous. Carlotta Walls LaNier, youngest of the Little Rock Nine, the first group of black students to go an all-white school, wrote an autobiography, A Mighty Long Way, revealing events in her life that the media illuminated and distorted. Events such as the first day of school at Central High, the video of Wilson being attacked, and bombings costing the city money were either illuminated or distorted by the media. During the integration of Little Rock, the media illuminated events that occurred, and distorted events by painting inaccurate or incomplete pictures.
In the article, The Real Christian Debate on Transgender Identity, author Emma Green tackles the topic of controversy between the various interpretations of Christianity about the idea of the transgender identity. The article is controversial as it displays two contrasting perceptions of the biblical appliance in acknowledging the transgender identity. Green provides an array of examples of both sides of the debate, those Christians that perceive that the Bible claims that transgender identity seizes to exist and those who advocate for the existence of transgendered individuals. The article begins by addressing the recent transition and exposure of Caitlyn
But in spite of his serious reservations about politicization of ideologies, he said that transgender people must never be turned away because Jesus would never do so.

This paper will focus on the problems with media literacy in social networking, the news, and in schools to better understand what reliable news is and what is not, to be better informed on what is going on in the world around you. This paper will also focus on the history of media literacy, what are the causes and effects of media literacy and how to spot bogus information. I will also discuss if how to deal with media literacy should be taught in school and if so, how early?
JL MC 477 has influenced my thoughts and perspectives of how the media represents diverse cultures, ethnicities, social classes, and even gender. This course has helped me clarify how and why the media identifies each group with their own stereotype or portrayal. Before the course, I had a general idea of what the media portrayed specific groups as, but now I am able to understand deeper because this course enhanced my thinking and analysis of each one. I have become aware that many of the portrayals of these groups from the media reflect reality.
Newspapers are essential in everyone’s daily life as it is the main source of news since the olden days before the television was invented. Without the newspapers, where does the news come from? Particularly in Malaysia, there are several languages used in the country. The main languages used however are English, Bahasa and Mandarin. Each of these different languages have specially dedicated newspapers to the particular language.
